DreamWorks builds cast for Puss in Boots to follow Shrek

Shrek has thus far had a phenomenal run; in addition to the musical, the CDs, winter holiday specials, figures, fall holiday specials, and other merchandise, most importantly, he’s had three ogre-sized successes in theaters – with a fourth in the works. But that’s not all there is to the franchise; the Puss in Boots spin-off film is set in motion, with a new release date; November 4th, 2011. (lookit all the links in here!). Zack Galifianakis currently in talks to join the cast of the DreamWorks Animation film alongside Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

Mirror mirror, on the wall. Whose the highest grossing of them all?

Mirror mirror, on the wall. Whose the highest grossing of them all?

With all of Avatar‘s monster success, there has been a lot of talk lately about the biggest box office draw of all time. Sure, Avatar‘s numbers are great, but when compared to the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, adjusting for the times and inflation, Avatar is way behind. That got us to thinking; with all of the recent animated blockbusters, what actually are the biggest, most successful toon films of all time? The answer may shock you – it’s not Shrek, UP, or even the Lion King. It’s Disney’s 1937 debut into cinematic animation; Snow White, at over $800 million. The film, Disney’s first, is 1st on the all-time list for animated films, and 10th on the all-time list of any movie (Avatar is 26th). Check out the rest of the list

Guardians of the Power Masks

Guardians of the Power Masks

Hawaii Film Partners and Toonzone Studios have teamed up to produce a number of animated projects, and the pair was nice enough to give us a sneak peek at a few of them. One of the most anticipated is a new animated series called Guardians of the Power Masks. Taking a “Powerpuff Girls” meets “Avatar” look, the toon follows Annie, a pop star wannabe, that is sent to spend the summer with her grandmother and cousin in a small Chinese town. It’s there that she learns of something mysterious threatening the planet. To fight off the forces of evil, Annie and her cousin train as warriors, using sacred Power Masks to keep their identities a secret. No official launch date or network has yet been provided, but stay TOONed for more info. Sound like something you’d watch?

Foothill Entertainment’s Raz & Benny

Foothill Entertainment's Raz & Benny

Foothill Entertainment has been working on a brand new CG animated series for the past few years, along with SpyDigital. Together, the two have crafted The Adventures of Raz & Benny, a buddy comedy following two mice along their various adventures. Sometimes they’re racing cars, sometimes their exploring jungles, sometimes they’re international spies. As a team, they can do anything… except talk! The short-form animations stick to a non-verbal presentation, letting the action speak for itself. Check out the series in action

Boomerang presents The Flintstones Bedrock ‘N’ Roll

Boomerang presents The Flintstones Bedrock 'N' Roll

The Flintstones had an incredibly long reign on the air. In fact, other than the Simpsons, the Flintstones is the longest running cartoon of all time. During their span, the series included a number of musical moments, take-offs, and guest stars, helping to cement its place in the … bedrock… of animation history. Boomerang, being the Cartoon Network affiliated channel that brings us the Flintstones on a regular basis, has grouped some of the best musical moments together to create Bedrock ‘N’ Roll; a marathon spanning hours. Originally airing last October, the network has re-run the 7+ hour series a number of times — anyone catch it?

Planet 51 a whopper at Burger King

Planet 51 a whopper at Burger King

A few months back, Columbia Pictures released a CG animated film called Planet 51, about an alien invasion. The catch being, humans were the aliens this time, landing on an Earth-like world and its native inhabitants. The movie went on to some major success, thanks to its great plot, beautiful animation, and a nice little partnership with Burger king. In the deal, BK Kids Meals featured six different toys based on gadgets from the film. The official BK website also featured movie-themed content, hyping the launch. After reviewing the influx of fans, both parties have dubbed the promotion a success — and, might I add, a tasty one!

Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Movie Debuts in Japan

Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Movie Debuts in Japan

This past weekend, Japanese fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series (any of them!) were treated to the blockbuster event we’ve been talking about for a while now, the Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary special. The film stars all 3 stars of the franchise, Yugi Muto, Jaden Yuki, and Yusei Fudo, from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, respectively. The lucky fans not only had the chance to see the film, but also to get their hands on a rare promotional card, featuring Sin Red-Eyes Black Dragon. I guess we’ll just have to wait for a local release …or imports! :). Check out some clips of the film in action
