4Kids One Piece versus original anime One Piece

4Kids One Piece versus original anime One Piece

Cartoons are sometimes created in one region of the world and later brought to others, making certain changes necessary; impacting different audiences, different beliefs, different languages, etc. It’s not an easy job, especially with us picky fans. 4Kids has been known to famously “Americanize” anime with a manga and Shonen Jump and Toei background, like One Piece, and even European concepts, like Chaotic. These moves lead to endless debates over dubbing and scrubbing policies, starting long before One Piece, Pokemon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! In fact, it reaches through 70s and 80s classics like Voltron and even the Smurfs, and beyond. If you’re new to this concept, take a look at this comparison video, and weigh in with your thoughts on the topic!

Jack Black hunts Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster

Jack Black hunts Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster

Well, at least, in animated form. Jack Black is currently involved with Chris Meledandri’s production unit, a part of Universal, for an upcoming animated film. While there’s still no name for the movie, it has already been acquired by Illumination Entertainment based on the premise; the search for beasts and monsters of legend, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. The animated film will be produced by Electric Dynamite, bringing teams together who have formerly worked on Horton Hears a Who!, the Ice Age movies, and The King of Kong. Jack Black is no noob to the world of voice acting, starring in the role of Po in Kung Fu Panda, and ranking amongst the all time top earners. We’ll just have to wait and see how this one fares! Any early thoughts?

Is Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim for kids?

Is Cartoon Network's Adult Swim for kids?

Adult Swim, or as you may be used to seeing it “[adult swim]”, launched nearly 10 years ago. While many of the shows that made it famous debuted earlier in the “regular” Cartoon Network blocks, it wasn’t until September of 2001 that they were grouped together under the Adult Swim banner. The block currently runs from 10pm through 6am and features a mix of animated series, syndicated shows, anime, and other original programming. Because of the late hours, the shows and toons are generally left unedited and uncensored, which is something many anime fans have been looking for. But with the popularity of Ben 10, Adventure Time, and Cartoon Network’s other “daytime” series, and because the channel is so often dominated by a younger audience, the question remains: can Adult Swim be appreciated by old and young alike? What do you think?

Toei and Orange bring us Captain Harlock and Ken the Great Bear Fist

French fans of anime have a lot to be happy for! Orange recently with Toei Animation Europe to bring two hit animated series to their Video on Demand feature; Captain Harlock and Ken the Great Bear Fist. Captain Harlock, also known as Captain Herlock, is as noble as he is rebellious, fighting against earth-born and alien regimes. Created by manga artist Leiji Matsumoto for 1953’s Adventures of a Honeybee, Harlock took the lead in 1978’s Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The character has appeared in Space Pirate Captain Herlock: The Endless Odyssey, and re-imagined as an Iron Cross fighter pilot and a gunslinger in the Old West. Ken, the Great Bear Fist, also known as Fist of the North Star, is Buronson and Tetsuo Hara’s manga series, later serialized by Shonen Jump and Shueisha. The story centers around Kenshiro, dedicating his life to fight those who threaten the lives of the weak and innocent through his fighting style, Hokuto Shinken. Anyone a fan of either?
