The internet got their first look at the new Batman today, as director Zack Snyder Tweeted some official (or perhaps “official unofficial”) shots. The Dark Knight is apparently alive and well in the Superman universe, with Affleck having received the cape and cowl from Bale, Keaton, Clooney, Kilmer, West and others before him.

The Man of Steel sequel, running under the possible Batman vs. Superman name, has had fans scouring the web for any level of detail for some time. Kevin Smith shared his thoughts, but no specifics, and just those little tidbits have circled the intrawebs, with speculation running wild. Now, finally, we get a look at the Batsuit, the Batmobile, and Ben Affleck in the mask.

Ben Affleck Batman

The picture isn’t exactly high-res, so there’s still room for speculation. And there are intentional filters and treatments to obscure details of the photo. But we’re at least able to see a familiar looking pointy-eared hero, in a costume design that looks somewhere between Batman Begins and Dark Knight — not quite as modular as the latter, but not quite as rubbery as the former.

The Batmobile has a similar hybrid look to it, resembling a cross between the Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s movies, and the 1989 Batman design that Tim Burton championed.

What do you guys think?

UPDATE: the new series is here! Cartoon Network has launched Ben 10: Omniverse. Let us know what you thought of the premiere episode, “The More Things Change”

We’ve only just recently gotten word of Ben 10’s upcoming video game, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction, but the folks behind the series aren’t done yet! Today, we can announce that TurnOut Ventures and Typhoon Games Studio have joined together to launch Ben 10 Omniverse: Rise of Heroes, the first multiplayer online game about the world of Ben 10. Currently available in Australia and Hong Kong, the game is set in the time between the original Ben 10 and Ben 10: Alien Force – prior to the newest series, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. Gamers can become a Bellwood Elementary School student with the ability to transform into one of three different alien forms, thanks to the Omnitrix. Sounds like a fun school to attend!

Okay, Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Week has come and gone, and as promised, we got ourselves a sneak peek of the new addition to the Ben 10 franchise with Ben 10: Omniverse. It’s cool and all, with our resident galactic protector teaming up with his younger self (or is it the other way around? Time Travel discussion has always blown my mind!) for twice the action, but it seems that a lot of fans are disappointed with the new art style, which seems slightly deformed compared to the previous shows’.

Personally, the new art style didn’t bother me. I loved The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker even though its art style faced similar complaints for being too “kiddie”. And if we’re going to pick bones here, Batman: The Animated Series features one of the most serious depictions of the world’s greatest detective and you’ll be hardpressed to find anyone complaining about the show even though its art style contains certain caricatured elements, such as ridiculously large and angular jaws that are remniscent of old golden age comic strips, which looked shoddy because they need to be produced fast due to a newspaper’s tight deadlines.

What about you? Did you like the new Ben 10: Omniverse art style or not? Feel free to discuss it in the comments or in the Toonbarn forums.

This past weekend was cold. Really cold. FROZEN cold. … cuz… y’know, the movie was out, while the temperature was down. Oh, its a stretch of a corny pun, I know, BUT it gets the job done. Disney’s latest and greatest CG animated film, FROZEN, had a bit of a resurgence in its sixth weekend in the box offices. The film pulled in just shy of $20 million dollars in the U.S. which is actually the third highest ranking for a 6th week ever (behind Titanic and animated 3D classic Avatar). Even more impressive, Frozen is now closing in on $300 million for its total run, needing just another snowball to topple that mountain.

Disney's Frozen

Rounding out the top three films this weekend are Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, each with their own impressive showing, but both receiving the cold chill from Disney’s Frozen.

Welcome to Ben 10: Omniverse. Share your opinions!

Cartoon Network has a special gift for each of us this morning: a brand new episode of the brand new series Ben 10: Omniverse! By the time you read this, many of you will have gotten your first glimpse of Man of Action’s new art and storyline direction for this latest generation of the franchise, with the special two part episode kicking off at 9am local time. Obviously, this show means a lot to a lot of people; Ben 10 is one of the more popular toons on TV in the past decade, so ANY new Ben-news is a big thing. However, add in the fact that it’s pretty different, at least visually, from everything we’ve seen so far… that makes it all the more exciting. So, what do you think? Have you seen it? Are you in love? Incredibly angry? What did you like about the premiere episode? Are you on board for ‘The More Things Change’? Shout out in the ToonBarn Comment section below, and let’s see where this new Ben 10: Omniverse is going to take us!

Bloxx on Ben 10

Bloxx on Ben 10

The general premise of Ben 10: Omniverse’s first episode seems pretty straight forward. Ben is forced to fight crime alone because Kevin and Gwen have other things to do – Gwen is off taking classes at college and… well, Kevin joins up with her. So, OK, this seems pretty inline with what an Ultimate Alien episode could be. But then Grandpa Max (!) introduces a whole new partner to the crime fighting gang, Plumber Rook. From there, its up to Ben and Rook to stop Fistina, Liam, and Bubble Helmet from destroying Mr. Baumann’s superstore. Right there, we’ve got all the flavor of an old school Ben 10 or Alien Force episode. …but it keeps going! Now, Ben and his new partner have to hunt down a mysterious city, deep under Bellwood.

Always Ben-branded

Always Ben-branded

From there? It’s pure Omniverse. We’ve got Khyber hunting for Ben, a Nemetrix equipped space dog, and let’s not forget the most amazing team up to ever come out of the world of animation; kid Ben, from the era of the original series, and teenage Ben, from the Ultimate Alien years.

Khyber the huntsman

Khyber the huntsman

Honestly, there’s a lot to take in. Man of Action and Cartoon Network each delivered in a big way with the new series. Obviously, the most noticeable piece to the overall puzzle is the time split between the two eras, with an older and younger Ben working together. This aspect seems to have gone over well with the fans, as a premise, and really added a cool new element to our Ben 10 experience – it made the adventure seem much fresher.

The artwork has been the other incredibly big discussion point, with the new toon adopting a new look and animation style. This aspect has been a lot more divisive, with a bold love it or hate it response. As this is the world of online fans, the “hate its” always tend to be a bit louder 🙂 Other cartoons have gone through similar changes through out the years, from Bugs Bunny’s Looney Tunes, to the animated world of Batman through Justice League Unlimited. Even the Simpsons has seen their look evolve over time. Many fans of the Ben 10 franchise seem to have been hoping for a Generator Rex type skew, which would have built on the three previous versions of the show. However, Man of Action really stuck to the first part of their premiere title, “The more things change…” and found a way to have the series stay visually fresh.

Ben and Grandpa Max together again

Ben and Grandpa Max together again

But it’s not just the art that starts a new direction: we’ve got new alien forms, a new super creepy monster bad guy, a brand new ally in Rook… at the very least, even if you’re one of those who didn’t like the art style, there’s a LOT of cool story elements to play with moving forward. Having seen the two-part pilot, we absolutely give the series the ToonBarn Seal of Approval, and STRONGLY recommend that you give it a chance – it’s that good!

That said, we are VERY on board with the new show – already fans! 🙂 What about you guys? What are your honest opinions?

The Aristocats: Special Edition Blu Ray Review

Before the whole CG and 3D animated boom happened, Disney was king of the hill when it comes to full-length 2D animated films. Unfortunately, Disney hasn’t been as aggressive as they should be when it comes to re-releasing their classic 2D titles on Blu-Ray. There are probably a lot of reasons for this, but chief among them is practicality, as the amount of time and effort a studio needs in restoring and remastering said classics would not be practical in terms of cost. The alternative is to release a shoddy, aged product, which isn’t good business either.

Apparently, last August 21 saw the house of mouse taking one for the team and re-releasing a fully remastered Blu Ray version of their classic 1970 animated film, The Aristocats, which may seem like an odd choice as it didn’t have as big a following as their other classics, but it is a good movie even if it doesn’t follow their usual formula. For instance, instead of a fairy tale adaptation or a family-friendly action adventure, it’s a jazz-infused, nimble-footed excursion featuring cats.

The Aristocats features the pet cats of famous opera star and wealthy socialite Adelaide Bonfamille, who has just passed away while leaving her massive fortune to said spoiled pets: Duchess (Eva Gabor), Toulouse (Gary Dubin), Berlioz (Dean Clark), and Marie (Liz English). Enter butler Edgar, who decides to get rid of the cats so that he can take the money for himself. His plan was to kidnap the cats and drown them in the river. Fortunately, the cats managed to escape from the butler’s clutches – unfortunately, they did so miles away from their Parisian villa. Lost in the French countryside with only their survival instincts (which have been dulled by their pampered upbringing), the felines get the help of a few new companions as they try to make their way back home.

Of course, even with the remastered video and audio, the Blu Ray disc it comes in will be wasted if The Aristocats didn’t have a ton of extras:

The Lost Open (HD, 10 minutes): Aristocats songwriter Richard M. Sherman introduces a storyboarded deleted scene that features a cut character and song. The demo included has temp voices — Sherman as Edgar and his brother Robert as a maid named Elvira — making it particularly amusing.

The Sherman Brothers: The Aristocats of Disney Songs (SD, 4 minutes): An overview of the Shermans’ contributions to The Aristocats and the process behind writing and storyboarding for an animated feature.

Deleted Song (SD, 8 minutes): A second deleted song, “She Never Felt Alone.”

Movie with On-Screen Lyrics (HD): Sing along with The Aristocats with this on-screen track.

Classic Song Selection (HD, 11 minutes): Four sing-along songs from the film.

Music Video (HD, 2 minutes): “Oui Oui Marie,” a skipping-record Aristocats remix by D!tto.

1956 Animated Special Excerpt (SD, 13 minutes): “The Great Cat Family,” hosted by Walt Disney.

Bonus Short (HD, 7 minutes): “Bath Day,” a Walt Disney animated short featuring Minnie Mouse and Figaro.

Kicking off the ToonOlympics competition today is a cartoon from India, called Chhota Bheem, matched against a Canadian cartoon, called Sidekick. Let The Games Begin! Please make sure you take a good look at both cartoons before deciding where to place your vote. It all comes down to which one would you rather watch on a regular basis, if these two cartoons were the only ones you could ever watch.

Sidekick

Sidekick (CANADA)

Sidekick is a Canadian animated television series about a boy named Eric and his best friend Trevor, who are training to become sidekicks at the Academy for Aspiring Sidekicks. While dealing with intense sidekick training, Eric must also contend with the disappearance of his superhero mentor, Maxum Man, and keep it a secret from the town of Splitsboro.

Main characters:
Eric Needles – Eric is the main character of the series. Eric was adopted as the sidekick to Maxum Man, the greatest superhero of all time (before he disappeared). He also has a huge crush on Vana, but he later seems to be more infatuated with Mandy Struction. He grew up in an orphanage because he has no parents. He was adopted by Maxum Brain. Eric always brings a t-shirt with a skull on it. He is voiced by Miklos Perlus.
Trevor Troublemeyer – Eric’s best friend and partner-in-shenanigans, Trevor, always ropes Eric into all sorts of hijinks. His father is Master XOX but he, along with everyone else, is completely unaware of this. He is voiced by Christian Potenza.
Kitty Ko – An energentic Asian heroine who, despite being a bit strange, gives the rest of the group advice, and is somewhat a good hacker and fixer. She has a huge crush on Eric and has a bit of a stalker-like obsession towards him. She is voiced by Denise Oliver.
Vana Glama – A self-absorbed, narcissistic, hyper-ambitious prima donna who’s not easily impressed and is extremely shallow. Eric has a huge crush on her. She often tortures Eric and hates him for no apparent reason, but eventually comes to view Eric somewhat affectionately. She is voiced by Stephanie Anne Mills.

Chhota Bheem

Chhota Bheem (INDIA)

Chhota Bheem is a children’s animation series, focusing on the adventures of a small boy named Bheem in the fictional city of Dholakpur. The series was launched in 2008. As of 2012, it has aired over 120 episodes. It was created by Rajiv Chilaka, the CEO of Green Gold Animation, and is broadcast on Pogo TV. The series quickly became popular and soon emerged as the number one Indian animation show in all of India. The success of the series has spun off into a number of short animation films over the years and a full length feature film titled Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan which was released in 2012.

Bheem lives in a fictional town called Dholakpur set in rural India. The series revolves around Bheem, a nine year old boy, who is brave, strong and intelligent. Bheem’s rival is Kalia Pahelwan, a jealous eleven year old bully, who is envious of Bheem’s popularity. New DC Animated Short: Supergirl Gets Grounded

DC Nation has just released a new clip from their Super Best Friends Forever (S.B.F.F.), which is a series of animated shorts that depict Donna Troy, Barbara Gordon, and Kara El as super powered BFFs who must deal with the hardships of teenage life, as well as the hardships of having enough power to level an entire city. Of course, they also have to deal with their super-powered guardians from time to time…

…which brings us to the clip. The clip shows Kara El (Supergirl) unable to leave the house after being grounded, and it is up to Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) and Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) to convince her to just fly out the window, which Supergirl unwittingly did. She soon find out that there’s no use being truant against some who is faster than a speeding bullet, and more strict than a very strict locomotive. Someone able to catch truant teens in a single bound.

Greatest Cartoon Bands of All Time
The 80s and early 90s was a magical time for both cartoons and music, as its that sweet spot in history where artists still had a lot of undiscovered territory to explore while having a rich history of existing genre and norms to rebel against. Of course, like all good things in entertainment, music and cartoons will find their way to each other, which is why every single cartoon during those times had a music-related character. Even the Transformers had Jazz, Blaster, and Soundwave.

Some of the best of examples didn’t just have a character with a music related concept, they had an entire band. Here are some of the greatest cartoon bands of all time:

Jet Screamer (the Jetsons)

This futuristic (well, everything from the Jetsons is futuristic, right?) band may have been marketed within the show as a musical act that turns garbage into marketable hits, the main example being the song Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah, which was taken from Elroy’s gibberish – what’s really notable about the band is that the song was so catchy it was eventually covered and turned into a real world hit by the Violent Femmes.

Cold Slither (from G.I. Joe)

Sure, the act is a one hit wonder, and it’s really just Dreadnoks that Cobra Commander clothed in tacky glam rock attire (which is probably the norm for G.I. Joe characters, come to think of it), but Cold Slither used subliminal messages to hypnotize enough people to fill an arena. That totally rocks.

Josie and the Pussycats

Forget the recent live action movie. The original pussycats were class acts who can belt out creamy and catchy Motown songs while being chased by bad guys. Also, like Jet Screamer, a large number of Josie and the Pussycat songs stood the test of time and were remade by modern bands. It also helps that the band is not a one hit wonder, having an entire show based around their act, similar to

Jem and the Holograms/The Misfits

We put both Jem and the Holograms and The Misfits in the same spot, because really, they’re two sides of the same cartoon coin. A large part of their appeal is based on how they play off of each other. The Holograms’ songs were some of the best commercially viable cartoon songs that didn’t actually become commercially viable. In fact, to this day it’s easy to find straight adult males who have fond memories of Jem and the Holograms.

Dethklok (from Metalocalypse)

I have to admit that I’m not a fan, and Dethklok is the only entry that isn’t from the 80s/90s, but you can’t deny that being so popular (well, within the fictional reality set in their cartoon) that they make more money than most countries’ governments, with enough clout to kill fans at concerts without getting into legal trouble, has earned them a spot on this list. Of course, it also helps that the band is a real band and has a real album (Dethalbum) that was a bonafide smash hit, having reached the 21st spot on Billboard’s top 200. Dethklok even tours around the country, with some of their songs finding their way to videogames (Guitar Hero II) and movies (Saw II).

Shuki Levy and Haim Saban

They’re not really cartoon characters. But if ever there is an 80s or 90s cartoon (or western tokusatsu) with a music score that found its way stuck into your head – you have Shuki Levy and Haim Saban to thank.
