You can add Universal’s big budget blockbuster Battleship to the list of casualties that fell under Disney/Marvel’s juggernaut superhero film The Avengers. For three consecutive weeks, The Avengers sat on top of the box office, bringing in $55.1 million in domestic ticket sales (for a total of $457 million cume domestically), while Battleship had to contend with a measly $25.3 million. The runners up are The Dictator with $17.4M, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows with $12.8M, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting with $10.5M.
Directed by Peter Berg, the Battleship movie has already grossed $226.8 million worldwide, but the Hasbro movie needed a strong US showing to offset its $209 million production cost, which exclude the money spent on marketing. On the other side of the spectrum, Sony/Aardman’s stop motion animated feature The Pirates! Band of Misfits sat at the tenth spot with an estimated $1.4 million take at then box office, with a total cume of $25.3 million, which may be small compared to the other movies in the list, but respectable enough and still makes for a tidy profit.
