It’s not a secret that Joss Whedon is one of the key factors that made The Avengers the third highest-grossing movie of all time in domestic and international markets (and the most successful comic book movie to date with a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but while a sequel is inevitable, the director’s seat is still up in the air as Whedon himself confirmed that he has not yet come to a decision on whether he wants to return for the sequel.
Whedon’s statement was given during a Firefly reunion panel at the San Diego Comic Con:
“I have not come to a decision on directing Avengers 2 yet… I am having too much fun with this [reunion] now.”
Of course, the statement can be simply taken at face value, with Whedon probably just making fun of the audience or not wanting to steer the discussion away from the rest of the panel, but it’s perfectly understandable to expect the studios to ask Whedon to return to the franchise, and Whedon himself doesn’t have any reason to decline. Nolan himself took 3 movies before wanting nothing to do with the big screen juggernaut he built.
