Square Enix and Marvel: What Kind of Games Will It Lead To?

With the revival of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise and Disney’s decision to focus more on licensing out their IPs for games as opposed to in-house production, nobody was really surprised that there’s going to be a new wave of Marvel AAA videogames. What is surprising is that Marvel has partnered with an unlikely name: Square Enix.

The announcement revealed that the two companies will create multiple Marvel-related games, and teased a video of a game that looks to be based on the Avengers, given the presence of iconic Avengers images such as Cap’s shield, Thor’s hammer, and Iron Man’s whatever you call those pieces of his armor.

Of course, what many fans are interested in is the unlikely pairing, as the partnership could potentially lead to all sorts of new games – but there is a tendency for people to look towards JRPG-type applications of the Marvel IP, probably owing to Square Enix’s reputation as the premiere AAA JRPG publisher (and the fact that the Kingdom Hearts franchise is well-suited for such a thing.) However, what many of these fans miss out on is that the Avengers game is being handled by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, so the types of games we’ll get may end up being more Hitman or Tomb Raider than Final Fantasy. But one can certainly hope.
