A couple of new trailers has just been released for the upcoming animated theatrical film titled Batman Ninja, which is exactly what the title implies – a story about Batman turning into a ninja (barring the obvious criticism that he, technically, is a trained ninja.) And no, this is not a fanfilm. It’s an honest to goodness official project from Warner Bros./DC, with animation handled by Kamikaze Douga (and it frankly looks and flows better than most recent DC animated movies!)

The plot for Batman Ninja is par for the course for what the Batman comic books do when they need to place the world’s greatest detective in places and times that are not exactly in line with the publisher’s strictly-policed continuity – it involves THE Batman and his allies being transported back in time to the Warring States Period in feudal Japan, in order to stop the Joker from rewriting history after usurping the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga.

You can watch the trailers below:

According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros. Digital platform is working on a new animated series that revolves around the popular Batman villain Harley Quinn. The report states that the series will consist of 26 x 30 minute episodes and will feature more mature storylines compared to Harley Quinn’s other recent appearances in a cartoon series.

For the uninitiated, the Harley Quinn character originated not from the comic books, but from the iconic Batman: the Animated Series, starting out as a sidekick and implied romantic partner for Batman’s nemesis, The Joker. While still a partner in crime for the Joker, the Harley Quinn character has since branched out on her own and have built her own loyal fanbase even outside of comic books, in some iterations even coming off as more of an anti-hero than a straight super villain. This popularity is further boosted with the iconic portrayal in the Suicide Squad film, by Australian actress Margot Robbie.

There are no concrete details yet on the plot of the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series, but it is said that the show is produced by execs Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey and Warner Bros. Animation. Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, also executive produces. Jennifer Coyle (DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year) produces with Halpern and Schumacker’s Ehsugadee Productions in association with Warner Bros. Animation.

As we promised last week, when we announced the Digital HD release of Batman vs Two-Face, and shared our exclusive interviews with William Shatner (Two-Face) and Burt Ward (Robin), this week’s release is on Blu-ray and DVD! AND, we have MORE interviews with Michael Jelenic (writer/producer), Rick Morales (Director), and James Tucker (producer).

Here are those interviews:

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, Batman vs Two-Face finds Batman and Robin back in classic 1960s action, protecting Gotham City from some of the most nefarious villains in comics history. But when the mutilated master of multiplicity, Two-Face, begins staging a daring crime wave across Gotham, the Caped Crusaders must work double-time to discover his mysterious secret identity before they can halt his evil-doing – all the while combating the likes of Catwoman, Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Bookworm, Hugo Strange and King Tut!
Here’s an all-new clip from the film:

In this reviewer’s opinion: “Just like its predecessor, Batman: Return of the Caped CrusadersBatman vs Two-Face is a must see for fans of the classic ’66 Batman series.  The movie is packed with several laugh-out-loud moments and is filled with easter eggs and nods to the series. Burt Ward‘s voice hasn’t changed a bit from the last time we heard the Boy Wonder exclaim ‘Holy (fill in the blank), Batman!’, and hearing Adam West one last time makes the heart melt.  And casting William Shatner as Harvey Dent/Two-Face was a perfect fit to this already star-studded cast!”
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released Batman vs Two-Face to Digital HD on October 10, 2017, and Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on October 17, 2017.

A looming global catastrophe forces Batman and Nightwing to partner with an unlikely hero in Batman and Harley Quinn, the next entry in the popular series of DC Universe Original Movies. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, the all-new, feature-length animated film arrived August 15th on Digital and TODAY (August 29) on Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray Deluxe Giftset, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD. The Blu-ray Deluxe Giftset comes with an exclusive Harley Quinn figurine.

ToonBarn Head Writer Marc Morrell was able to interview the cast and crew of this film at the World Premiere at San Diego Comic-Con.  The people interviewed included Kevin Conroy (Batman), Loren Lester (Nightwing), Paget Brewster (Poison Ivy), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Floronic Man), Sam Liu (Director), Bruce Timm (Executive Director/Co-Screenwriter), and Jim Krieg (Co-Screenwriter).

Spawned from an original story by animation icon Bruce Timm, Batman and Harley Quinn will be available in several popular formats as the first Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack ($44.98 SRP) release of a DC Universe Original Movie; Blu-ray Deluxe Giftset ($39.99 SRP), featuring an exclusive Harley Quinn figurine; Blu-ray Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP); DVD ($19.98 SRP); and Digital ($19.99 HD, $14.99 SD). In Batman and Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Jason Woodrue (a.k.a. The Floronic Man) embark on an ecological quest to save the planet – and, unfortunately, eliminate most of humankind along the way. To save humanity, Batman and Nightwing are forced to enlist Harley Quinn to catch Poison Ivy, Harley’s BFF and frequent partner-in-crime. But Batman’s patience is put to the test by the unpredictable and untrustworthy Harley during the twists and turns the reluctant companions face during their bumpy road trip. The result is a thrill ride of action, adventure and comedy no Batman fan has seen before.

The latest DC animated film features a stellar voice cast led by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) reprising his role as the Dark Knight, alongside Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) making her debut as the irrepressible Harley Quinn. And we have to say, Melissa Rauch shows a tremendous range of emotions as Harley in this one, and her performance was outstanding! Loren Lester, the voice of Robin in Batman: The Animated Series, returns as Nightwing. Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds) and Kevin Michael Richardson (The Cleveland Show) provide the voices of the villainous duo Poison Ivy & Jason Woodrue, respectively.

Sam Liu (Batman: The Killing Joke) directed from an original story by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) with a teleplay written by Timm & Jim Krieg (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). Co-Producer is Alan Burnett (The Batman). Executive Producers are Sam Register and Bruce Timm. Benjamin Melniker and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers.

“In this all-new movie, we give Harley Quinn the starring role she deserves as she partners with Batman and Nightwing to save the day,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “We are thrilled to showcase the latest story from the remarkable mind of Bruce Timm for all fans to enjoy.”

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment bring together two of pop culture’s all-time heroes – TV’s original Batman and Captain Kirk, Adam West and William Shatner, respectively – to voice the title characters in the full-length, animated feature film, Batman vs. Two-Face. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will make the all-new movie available October 10, 2017 on Digital and October 17, 2017 on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP) and DVD ($19.98 SRP).

As the sequel to the 2016 hit animated film Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, the all-new Batman vs. Two-Face finds Batman and Robin back in classic 1960s action, protecting Gotham City from some of the most nefarious villains in comics history.

The late Adam West leads the star-studded cast in his final performance as Batman. The beloved actor delivers an inspired turn opposite fellow pop culture icon William Shatner (Star Trek) as the criminally conflicted Harvey Dent/Two-Face. This is only the second production of any kind to feature the two titans of the fanboy realm together. West and Shatner first teamed in the 1963 “Alexander The Great” television series that never made it past the pilot.

The cast also boasts two more pop culture icons of the 1960s. Burt Ward is back for more “holy” fun as the Boy Wonder himself, Robin, and Tony Award winner Julie Newmar reprises her role as the fiendish feline, Catwoman.

The voice cast includes Jeff Bergman (Joker, Bookworm, Desmond Dumas), Sirena Irwin (Dr. Quinzel), Thomas Lennon (Chief O’Hara), Lee Meriwether (Lucilee Diamond), William Salyers (Penguin), Lynne Marie Stewart (Aunt Harriet), Jim Ward (Hugo Strange, Commissioner Gordon), Steven Weber (Alfred, Two-Face henchmen) and Wally Wingert (Riddler, King Tut).

The core Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders filmmaking team reprises their roles for Batman vs. Two-FaceRick Morales (LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes – Justice League: Cosmic Clash) directs from a script by Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) and James Tucker (Teen Titans: The Judas Contract). Tucker and Jelenic are also Supervising Producer and Producer, respectively. Sam Register is Executive Producer. Benjamin Melniker and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers.

Batman vs. Two-Face is a must-have for all Batman fans featuring a cavalcade of his foes, and an amazing cast including two giants of pop culture, Adam West and William Shatner,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is excited to bring these beloved characters to animated life, and proud to have been associated with an actor as impressive, gracious and entertaining as Adam West. We salute his extensive contributions to the legacy of the character, and we are greatly appreciative of his cooperation and support in bringing this animated film to fruition. He will be greatly missed.”

Special Features for Batman vs. Two-Face include:

  • “The Wonderful World of Burt Ward” (featurette) – Spotlighting Burt Ward’s life away from acting – particularly his many benevolent activities, and his lifelong devotion to the health and welfare of dogs.
  • Adam West Tribute Panel/2017 Comic-Con International 2017 – At the 2017 Comic-Con International in San Diego, a panel celebrated the life and times of the late Adam West, the legendary “Bright Knight.” Fans laughed, cried and cheered as actress Lee Meriwether (Catwoman from the 1966 Batman movie), director/writer/actor Kevin Smith, actor/radio personality Ralph Garman, producer James Tucker and moderator Gary Miereanu captivated the audience with anecdotes and tales about Adam West.
  • Actors Burt Ward and Julie Newmar discussing various aspects of their lives, ambitions and inspirations.

ToonBarn’s coverage of the World Premiere of Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders at New York Comic Con (NYCC) is here, as we celebrate today’s release of the DC Original Animated Feature on DVD and Blu-ray, everywhere DVDs are sold.

ToonBarn Head Writer Marc Morrell attended the NYCC World Premiere and was able to get interviews with Adam West (Batman), Michael Jelenic (Screenwriter/Producer), James Tucker (Producer/Screenwriter), and Rick Morales (Director). See those below, after this review of the movie.

The audience for the World Premiere at NYCC were so ready for a comedic Batman movie, and Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders had enough of the balance of nostalgic ’66 Batman TV Series fun with an all new animated story that brings all these classic characters back, using some of the voices from the original TV series.

brcc021816

Bringing these iconic characters to animated life are Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman). In the new film, Penguin, The Joker, Riddler and Catwoman have combined their wicked talents to hatch a plot so nefarious that the Dynamic Duo will need to go to outer space (and back) to foil their arch enemies and restore order in Gotham City.

In addition to the film, audiences on Blu-ray and DVD will get 2 wonderful featurettes as a Bonus. The first, “Those Dastardly Desperados,” a featurette that explores how the villains became more than just antagonists in a Batman story – they became icons of American pop culture. The second, “A Classic Cadre of Voices”, where the vocal cast and production crew talk about the importance of recreating the sounds of the sixties. Both of these are great glimpses at what went into recreating the style of the original live-action series in an animated form.

brcc019602

Out of all the films that were released in 2016 that had Batman as a character, this film was certainly the most fun. People who were fans of the original ’60s Batman TV series will love all of the “easter eggs” that are reminiscent of elements they found entertaining, like how Batman provides constant teaching to Robin – “to the crosswalk!” – or how Batman and Robin make leaps of logic that nobody would make to determine where the villains will strike next. There were tons of fans laughing at the world premiere screening when these references occurred. It was like watching with a laugh track, which this animated feature does not have.

brcc027253

Our top 3 characters, Batman, Robin, and Catwoman, are all voiced by the same actors that made these characters famous, and it appears after 50 years, Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar haven’t lost a step in making these characters just as iconic to a whole new generation of Batman fans.

Big Thank You to Sam Register and all the people at Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment for bringing this movie to the fans! The DVD and Blu-ray value pack are in stores now! Don’t hesitate to get your copy!

Here are those interviews we promised – ENJOY!

Friday at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) is always World Premiere night for Warner Bros Home Entertainment to present their original animated movies and this year’s movie was the highly anticipated Batman: The Killing Joke. The movie is adapted from one of the most highly regarded graphic novels of all time, Batman: The Killing Joke, written by Alan Moore with art by Brian Bolland. The graphic novel is revered as canon by many as the source of Joker’s origin story and shows how “one bad day” can make anyone go insane, regardless of their level of character. The movie also includes an interpretation of Barbara Gordon’s (a.k.a Batgirl) backstory which was written just for the movie.

Due to its “R” rating, the movie had to be shown after 10pm PT which meant the panel was held first. The panel participants included Sam Liu (Director), Brian Azzarello (Screen Writer), Bruce Timm (Executive Producer), and voice actors Kevin Conroy (Batman), Tara Strong (Batgirl) and Ray Wise (Commissioner Gordon). Mark Hamill (Joker) was unable to attend the Con due to his current schedule but he didn’t let the fans down and called into the panel and thanked everyone for their support over the years and he explained how much he had wished he was there. Just before the movie started, the following upcoming projects were announced; Justice League Dark, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (coming Spring 2017) and Batman & Harley Quinn: A Bruce Timm Original (Summer 2017).

KJ Panel 1

After the movie ended, Sam Liu, Brian Azzarello and Bruce Timm came back on stage to a roaring ovation. They seemed happy with the crowd’s reaction, remarking that the audience cringed at the spots they anticipated and cheered when expected. Considering we have read the graphic novel many times prior to the film coming out, we were pleased with the movie, and with the producers’ and writer’s adaptation of the graphic novel and the additional prologue for Batgirl. We didn’t quite understand which scenes made it Rated R, per se, as it really could have been PG-13, by today’s standards.

Batman: The Killing Joke was released digitally on July 26, 2016 and will be released on August 2, 2016 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Blu-Ray™ Deluxe Edition and Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack. The Blu-ray Combo Pack includes a digital version of the movie on Digital HD with UltraViolet. The Blu-ray™ Deluxe Edition will include all components of the Blu-Ray™ Combo Pack, along with an exclusive figurine of The Joker in a numbered, limited edition gift set.
