According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros. Digital platform is working on a new animated series that revolves around the popular Batman villain Harley Quinn. The report states that the series will consist of 26 x 30 minute episodes and will feature more mature storylines compared to Harley Quinn’s other recent appearances in a cartoon series.
For the uninitiated, the Harley Quinn character originated not from the comic books, but from the iconic Batman: the Animated Series, starting out as a sidekick and implied romantic partner for Batman’s nemesis, The Joker. While still a partner in crime for the Joker, the Harley Quinn character has since branched out on her own and have built her own loyal fanbase even outside of comic books, in some iterations even coming off as more of an anti-hero than a straight super villain. This popularity is further boosted with the iconic portrayal in the Suicide Squad film, by Australian actress Margot Robbie.
There are no concrete details yet on the plot of the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series, but it is said that the show is produced by execs Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey and Warner Bros. Animation. Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, also executive produces. Jennifer Coyle (DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year) produces with Halpern and Schumacker’s Ehsugadee Productions in association with Warner Bros. Animation.
