This summer, Disney Movies Anywhere will be launching an all new short from Disney•Pixar short titled Radiator Springs 500 1/2, which serves as the first installment into the exciting new Tales from the Radiator Springs series. The short can be watched for free simply by downloading the Disney Movies Anywhere app for iPhone or iPad.

Disney Movies Anywhere Bring Back Cars for a Race Short

This coming spring, Disney Movies Anywhere will be bringing back the rip-roaring heroes of Pixar’s Cars via an all-new short film titled “The Radiator Springs 500½. The short clocks in a t six minutes and will feature the original voice cast.

In The Radiator Springs 500 ½ , a gang of Baja racers arrive in Radiator Springs and challenge Lightning McQueen to a race. The short is directed by Rob Gibbs and Scott Morse.

It’s been five years since Walt Disney launched the first film in the Cars franchise, and since then, the CG animated movie about anthromorphic vehicles has become one of the studio’s most lucrative and popular franchises. Walt Disney has recently announced their plans to expand and support the Cars franchise by way of additional branded content and consumer-level merchandise. This involves new Cars animated shorts that are slated to appear as bonus content on DVDs as well as on the Disney Channel, Disney XD, and their other digital platforms. Some of the shorts are also planned to run during theater previews.

At first thought, you probably wouldn’t think there’s anything similar between lil blue critters, space aliens, old western cowboys, and patriotic super soldiers. And yet, all of them crammed into the top three spots at the box office this weekend. Captain America: The First Avenger took third in the group with $25 million, and the other two films, Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs, each raked in more than $36 million in their premiere weekends. Sure, there was still a Harry Potter and a Transformers in there, but there’s three new bosses on top. Any of this ticket money belong to you?

Next summer is going to be very crowded with Marvel’s comic book super heroes. When The Avengers film hits theaters, we’ll have Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and a whole slew of other Disney icons ready to battle anything that comes their way. But their story wont be contained just in the single film; rather, we’ve had Nick Fury recruiting the cast for some time now, with some of those folks already appearing in their own films. And now, Cap officially kicks off the saga with the newest Marvel film, Captain America: The First Avenger, which opened in first place this past weekend, with $65 million to it’s name, besting the opening to DC Comics’ Green Lantern movie from a few weeks back, and even topping Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It seems like just a few weeks ago, you couldn’t see any other movie besides Transformers, as the latest sequel, Dark of the Moon, dominated the box office. In fact, that was only a few weeks ago! Now, every screen is all about Harry Potter, as the franchise pumps out the final presentation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Transformers was big, but HP7 is now on a pace to become the biggest of all time, besting The Dark Knight with the largest opening weekend box office ever.

Pixar and Disney may have just driven Cars 2 to theaters, but they’re already producing the spinoff, Planes. They’ve conquered the roads, so why not set to the skies? The project is currently slated as a DisneyToon Studios 2013 direct-to-video release, though it’s important to remember Toy Story 2 originally started as a direct-to-video production, before getting a greenlight for the big screen. So could we see new Planes characters jetting past Lightning McQueen in theaters, instead of just DVD and Blu-ray? Certainly possible. What’s important for now is just to see how awesome their world is, mixing a small town dreamer named Dusty into the big leagues of flight. Check out the teaser trailer
