Adventure Time Creator: Pendleton Ward
Cartoon Network’s Hit Animated Comedy Adventure Time will enter its 4th this coming April, and chances are you’re already familiar with the characters, the show, the settings – but how well do you know Finn and Jake’s creator, Pendleton Ward?
A graduate of CalArts’ renowned Character Animation Program, Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward certainly has the chops to produce a hit animated show, but his fondness for animation and cartoons surfaced at an early age – with his San Antonio TX elementary school days spent drawing crude flipbooks during his spare time.
Pendleton’s first real break in the industry is when he became a storyboard artist for Cartoon Network’s The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Pendleton worked closely and got a lot of experience from Flapjack creator Thurop Van Orman.
Fast forward to 2010 and you’ve got Pendleton debuting Adventure Time, with the series receiving positive feedback across the board and gaining a lot of fans both young and old. At the close of Adventure Time’s 3rd season, the show has already earned the distinction of being the #1 program on Monday nights (7-9p) with kids 2-11 (Source: Nielsen Media Research). Forbes named Ward one of its “30 Under 30” of 2011 and USA Today “Pop Candy” ranked Ward #12 on their “100 People of 2011” List. The rest, as they say, is history (or is it future? Adventure time still has a 4th season, right? It’s definitely “the future”.)
