Ben 10 / Generator Rex: Heroes United review

On Friday, November 25th, Cartoon Network introduced a game changer: Ben 10 / Generator Rex: Heroes United, an hour-long special event of out-of-this-world proportions! The special brought Ben Tennyson of Ben 10 fame over to the universe of Rex Salazar, of Generator Rex fame. There was a smash up, a team up, and then a battle to end all battles with the malevolent Alpha Nanite; an evil, twisted mirror of the Nanites that Rex utilizes for all of his builds. For months we’ve been waiting to watch. For hours we’ve been watching, rewatching, and reviewing what we’ve just seen. So what’s the final verdict? Who won? Will there be another? And, overall, how did we rate Heroes United?

Without question, the show was awesome. Hands down, Cartoon Network delivered an A+, not just for Ben 10 Ultimate Alien fans or for Generator Rex fans — this was an amazing toon by any regard. The team up was evenly balanced, the new surprises and villain were so worth the wait, the story and production values were top notch, etc.

Outside of Ben and Rex, we did get to see a number of guest stars from the Generator Rex universe, from Agent Six to the White Knight, the former joining in the battle against Alpha early on, and the latter helping finish it off.

Thankfully, Ben’s many, many alien forms made numerous appearances.  From Big Chill to XLR8 to Diamondhead to Humungousaur to Rath  and Cannonbolt, it was absolutely a full roster, spanning aliens from the original Ben 10, Ben 10 Alien Force, and Ben 10 ultimate Alien.

Alpha Nanite got an upgrade

Alpha Nanite got an upgrade

Undeniably, one of the best parts of the episode was the Alpha Nanite.  Honestly, we were expecting so much of the special to focus on the relationship between Ben and Rex (from beating each other up, to becoming friends) and never thought much of a “story” would work out, or even be necessary.  And while it likely wasn’t necessary, the folks at Cartoon Network absolutely blew us away with how diabolical and creepy Alpha was.  In each and every one of his stages of evolution, he proved to be an actual threat to Ben, to Rex, and to their combined forces.

A big upgrade

And when we say combined forces…

Really, really great episode that you’ll be able to check on Cartoon Network again and again over the next few days and weeks (check local listings!). We’d love to explore the rest of the Heroes United, including Ben’s new alien form (how about just the name as a teaser – Shocksquatch!) AND the very awesome finale battle with Alpha, buuuut… we’ll save that for a few more days to give everyone a chance to get caught up.

In the meantime, all we can say is: we loved it. A MUST see, A+ rating.

Can’t wait for the sequel and rematch 😉
