Despicable Me’s Minions and the Despicable Banana

Despicable Me's Minions and the Despicable Banana

Of all the animated films to hit theaters in the past few years, there are a rare few where the audience is as intrigued by the main characters as they are with the secondary characters. Lion King’s Timon and Pumba are good examples, as are the teams of penguins and monkeys from the Madagascar franchise. Each of those films had so much success with the secondary group that those sub-stars went on to receive their own movies and animated series on TV. Such, it seems could be the fate with Despicable Me – a story that focused on Gru’s maturity from super villain to adoptive father, but never lost sight of those adorable (and evil) Minions. Maybe there’s a toon in there someday, but in the meantime, there’s already a few solo adventures, including the “Banana” mini movie on the Despicable Me Blu-ray and DVD – not to mention “Home Makeover” and “Orientation Day”. Take a look!

Tron: Legacy, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, and the Lion King on Disney’s Blu-ray 3D

Tron: Legacy, Tangled, Beauty and the Beast, and the Lion King on Disney's Blu-ray 3D

Big things are happening in Disneyland for 2011. Two of Mickey Mouse’s most popular films, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are getting the Blu-ray and 3D treatment, completely remade for newer home video systems. In addition, two of the newest animated (and quasi-animated) adventures will be getting the same options with Tangled and Tron: Legacy. Apparently, we’re on a direct path to a world that is nothing but 3D – movies, video games, bubble gum… everything! In fact, even as I’m typing this and looking around the ToonBarn Studios, everything here is beginning to look 3D, as well… Anyway, check out the early press release to the goings-on at Disney!

Mirror mirror, on the wall. Whose the highest grossing of them all?

Mirror mirror, on the wall. Whose the highest grossing of them all?

With all of Avatar‘s monster success, there has been a lot of talk lately about the biggest box office draw of all time. Sure, Avatar‘s numbers are great, but when compared to the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, adjusting for the times and inflation, Avatar is way behind. That got us to thinking; with all of the recent animated blockbusters, what actually are the biggest, most successful toon films of all time? The answer may shock you – it’s not Shrek, UP, or even the Lion King. It’s Disney’s 1937 debut into cinematic animation; Snow White, at over $800 million. The film, Disney’s first, is 1st on the all-time list for animated films, and 10th on the all-time list of any movie (Avatar is 26th). Check out the rest of the list

Roy E. Disney, gone but not forgotten

Roy E. Disney, gone but not forgotten

2009 marked the year we lost one of the true heroes of the cartoon industry; Roy E. Disney, the son and nephew of The Walt Disney Company co-founders, Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney, passed away in December at the age of 79. During his 56-year run at Disney, he guided the studio into a new golden age of animation, with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King – four of the most profitable movies of all time. You’ll be missed, Mr. Disney! Thanks for all the great toons over the years!! In his honor, please check out a nice video collection from some of his greatest contributions

Scariest Cartoon Characters #10: Scar

Top 20 Scariest Cartoon Characters Number 10 Scar

As King Mufasa’s younger brother in The Lion King, Scar sees his whole life as the outcast, living outside the kingdom. When Mufasa’s son Simba was born, the new cub lowered Scar’s ranking even further, replacing him as second-in-command. This boiled Scar’s rage, and he formed a plan to take over The Pride Lands. By doing away with his brother Mufasa and his nephew Simba, Scar would be king, and able to rule the land as he saw fit. True evil, at work!

Whether it’s the notion that he’s willing to kill his own family, the fact that he’s an evil lion ready to attack at any time, his ability to lead over an army of hyenas, or that creepy creepy creepy voice, Scar is definitely one of the scariest character. Check out some video footage of this selection after the break!
