New Sonic Boom Characters Revealed

After 140 million games sold and a successful animated series, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is gearing up for its biggest year yet. In anticipation of his latest adventure, SEGA will be revealing characters for the brand-new Sonic Boom universe, which will include the first ever CG animated TV series debuting on Cartoon Network, a line of video games for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, as well as an extensive merchandising program. The list of the newest characters that will be introduced in both the video game and animated series include:

The reception for the new character designs for the upcoming videogame, TV show, and merchandise spin-off for Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Boom, was mixed. Some people found the designs workable, while some were indifferent, and an even bigger number felt that the redesign was awful and bordering on unnecessary. It turns out that the earlier designs were worse, as even Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka found them “traumatic.”

The recent MAGFest 11 saw the debut of Blue Cor Studios’ Sonic the Hedgehog fan film. Directed by Eddie Lebron (who was responsible for the Mega Man fan film that made the rounds last year), and featuring Jaleel White as the voice of Sonic, the 20 minute short should be a lot of fun for fans of the Sonic franchise (unless you hate “talking” Sonic.)

For twenty years, Sonic the Hedgehog has been a massively popular icon for video games and animation, alike. Whether you’re watching Sonic X or playing Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the blue speedster has surely brought you hours of joy. Sega is looking to reward that dedication with their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th anniversary celebration. To kick the party up a notch, the company is producing 1,000 specially crafted figurines that depict the Blue Blur. No word yet on how to get your own, but Sega is boldly proclaiming they will NOT be sold in stores. Stay TOONed right here for more info. In the meantime, check out the designs!

Sonic the Hedgehog Fanfilm in the works

Since Sonic’s 20th Anniversary is arriving, why not celebrate the blue Hedgehog with an awesome fanfilm? Eddie Lebron, writer and director of the amazing feature length “Megaman” fanfilm, decided he’d deliver just that, and recently announced that feature our favorite Blue blur! The film will be a non-profit 10-20 minute short, free to download and to watch. It will be based around mostly about the games and some Satam elements, but is said to be a prequel, taking place before the very first game. Characters so far announced include: Sonic, Eggman and E series droids, which have taken the place of swatbots.  Other characters are still up for consideration (*cough* Tails and Knuckles *cough*). Despite being a live action film, Sonic will be completely CGI. Release information and other details are quickly approaching, which Lebron hoping for a June or July release.
