4Kids and TV Tokyo Finally Settle Dispute Over Yu-Gi-Oh License

Global Children’s Entertainment and Merchandise Licensing company 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., and Asatsu DK Inc and TV Tokyo have jointly announced that they have finally reached a settlement of the lawsuit ADK and TV Tokyo originally brought against 4Kids regarding the license of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Property.

The lawsuit was originally filed against 4Kids last year after TV Tokyo (licensors of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Property) conducted an audit on 4Kids’ Yu-Gi-Oh! business per their licensing agreement, and accused 4Kids of “wrongful deductions, underpayments, and unmet obligations,” stating that the company owes them US$4,792,460.36.

4Kids unveils Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal Season 1 Intro for Toonzai lineup

It wont be long now – just a few more days until fans get their look at the new Yu-Gi-Oh! series, as 4Kids readies Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal. Set to debut on October 15th, the story is set in Heartland city, following the adventures of Yuma Tsukumo. Like the main characters in each series of the franchise, Yuma hopes to become a champion of all Duel Monsters. Certainly helps matters when he teams with Astral, a mysterious spirit in search of his lost memories – that just happen to have been turned into 99 different Xyz Monster cards, called Numbers (despite being named with letters! Whatever, they’re in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, so that makes us happy!) and scattered around the world. The Numbers can possess duelists, which makes them a popular target for Numbers Holders and Numbers Hunters. Excited yet? Now, take a sneak peek at the intro and theme song for season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, right here

4Kids and P&R roar with Dinosaur King

There might still be a messy legal battle with Yu-Gi-Oh!, not to mention the whole filing for bankruptcy thing, but 4Kids is still kicking! To prove there’s still some might in their step, the company recently signed a deal with P & R to spread the fun of Dinosaur King around the world. The deal includes a number of Dinosaur King branded products, from stickers to books to candy and chips. The roll out of items will begin later this year, as the new season starts up on 4Kids’ Toonzai. While most of the products will be heading to Asia and Eastern European locations, there are rumors of a new toyline developing for the North American region afterward. How many Dinosaur King fans are here?

Al Kahn moves from 4Kids to Baby Genius

The former CEO of 4Kids Entertainment didn’t stay retired long. Al Kahn moves from running the Toonzai network to serving as an exclusive consultant for Pacific Entertainment’s Baby Genius. After leaving 4kids in January of 2011, Kahn dodged a number of woes to recently fall upon the company; 4Kids filing for bankruptcy and a messy legal battle over the Yu-Gi-Oh! brand. Now, Kahn hopes to bring his years of experience in the children’s field to the up-and-coming potential of the Baby Genius brand.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game turns 10

Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game turns 10

Sure, there’s a whole on-going legal nightmare with 4Kids, TV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems – but that wont stop the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise from moving forward! Especially as the mighty Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game reaches it’s 10th anniversary! That’s right, we’re talking ten years for Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, and there’s already big plans in motion. Konami Digital Entertainment will introduce a brand new, universal (read: no lettering?) logo, as well as a new starter deck; 2011 Starter Deck: Dawn of the Xyz. Both should make their debut on July 12th. No word on if that will bring about the end of the courtroom drama, or the launch of Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL, but we’ll be watching (and playing!) for you!

4Kids deals Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL their way

4Kids deals Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL their way

In the ongoing battle between 4Kids and Yu-Gi-Oh! (specifically, TV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems, Inc.) the courts apparently haven’t reached a final decision just yet. The popular anime property has been wavering back and forth between owners, and NAS recently tried to take full control, once and for all. But the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has agreed with 4Kids, that the American company will control the latest spinoff series, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, for production and marketing. At least for now, as the court also set up a schedule for future rounds in the legal duel. Between June and August, the discussion will focus on whether 4Kids denied sending funds to NAS, and whether Yu-Gi-Oh! was properly separated from 4Kids. What does this mean? Well, as of now, Yu-Gi-Oh! is still a 4Kids property, and its likely we’ll see Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL on ToonZai this fall. But how much this process has damaged the brand and franchise has yet to be seen.

Yuma gets ready to Duel on Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal

In the future, Augmented Reality Duels are all the rage across the Heartland, using D-Gazers and D-Pads to produce Super-Charged Monster Duels. Chief amongst them is Yuma Tsukumo (sorta like this era’s Yugi). When Yuma meets up with Astral, he is set on a quest to find the 99 Numbers Cards, which introduce Number Monsters. So where does this leave Yuma in his duels with others, like Ryoga? Will the quest replace everything he cares for? What is Astral’s true plan? We’ll just have to TOON in to the latest spinoff in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal, and see!
