The world’s greatest DC Super Heroes will be joining forces and will be heading to Cartoon Network for the premiere of Justice League Action. This all-new animated series will kick off with a four-part special event dubbed “Shazam Slam” on Friday, December 16 at 6PM (ET/PT), followed by regular airing of new episodes every Saturday morning on December 24 onwards.

In “Shazam Slam,” Batman fights for his life against the powerful villain Black Adam on the Rock of Eternity, with the ensuing fight resulting in Black Adam unleashing a horde of Djinn determined to revert the Earth back to its pre-human, volcanic state. Possessed by the Djinn, Batman is turned into a giant flying Batmonster that proceeds to lay waste to the Hall of Justice. With Superman being the only one who can hold back the possessed Batman, the rest of the Justice League must seek help from Shazam and The Wizard in order to hunt down and defeat each of the Djinns that are running rampant.

According to a joint announcement from comic book publishers DC and Boom! Studios, 2017 will see super-powered do-gooder groups the Justice League and the Power Rangers team up for a crossover comic book miniseries. The timing of the crossover is not surprising, as 2017 will see movies based on each franchise grace the big screens.

The comic will be titled Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and will consist of six issues featuring JL members Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Cyborg sharing space with the Power Rangers sextet, in order to team up (or fight each other first before teaming up, as is often the case with crossovers.) The mini-series will be written by comic book scribe Tom Taylor, whose past credits include Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion. Art duties will be handled by Justice League of America Rebirth: The Ray’s Stephen Byrne.

The press release includes a synopsis for the crossover:

Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove when the Power Rangers’ Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged! Zack the Black Ranger is flung into an alternate universe full of citizens possessing outrageous powers and wearing strange costumes. Will Jason the Red Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger, Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger and Tommy the Green Ranger be able to get to Zack in time to save him from Batman?

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has recently posted the first official clip from the upcoming DC Universe Original Movie Justice League: Gods & Monsters on their Youtube channel. The clip gives fans a glimpse at the feature-length animated thriller, which has been scheduled for a Friday, July 10, 7 pm World Premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con (Ballroom 20), way ahead of its Digital HD launch on July 14 and the BR/DVD release on July 28.

Justice League: Gods & Monsters follows a divergent reality in which the Justice League continue to “protect” the planet with impunity. The group formed by core members Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman employ fear and intimidation instead of hope, and keep the population safe under their iron fist.

Justice League: Gods & Monsters boasts of an all star cast that includes voice cast which includes Michael C. Hall (“Dexter”) as Batman, Benjamin Bratt (“Law & Order,” “24”) as Superman, Tamara Taylor (“Bones”) as Wonder Woman, Paget Brewster (“Criminal Minds”) as Lois Lane, Jason Isaacs (“Harry Potter” films) as Lex Luthor and C. Thomas Howell (E.T., “Southland”) as Dr. Will Magnus.

CBS has recently posted a hefty full-length trailer for their upcoming small screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Supergirl, which has Melissa Benoist playing the role of Kara Zor El. Clocking in at six and a half minutes, the trailer reveals a lot of important points in the series (how it fits in with the existing Superman universe, what she looks like, her gender preference, etc.,) while also giving viewers a general idea of the feel and tone. You can check out the trailer below:

The official synopsis:

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime. Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”), Ali Adler, Sarah Schecter and Andrew Kreisberg are executive producers for Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The pilot was directed by Glen Winter (“Arrow”).

Families with children dressed in their favorite DC superhero shirts came out to The Paley Center for Media in New York City on Saturday, January 24 to see a free screening of LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League, followed by a Q&A panel with some of the cast and crew, and a meet and greet for pictures and autographs.

DSC06980

ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell was hot on the scene with his family, taking pictures, getting interviews with the cast and crew, reviewing the screening (which was really great), and now we have videos to share with you:

In LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League, Batman has joined the newly formed Justice League in order to keep tabs on Superman, a mistrust that is complicated by Superman’s clumsy – but well-meaning – clone, Bizarro. Bizarro’s creation of the Bizarro League has caused confusion amongst the world’s greatest Super Heroes, but an even greater and mysterious threat may force the Justice League and Bizarro League to band together to defeat evil.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and The LEGO Group, LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League will be distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on February 10, 2015.

Former Game of Thrones cast Jason Momoa is reportedly locked in to play the king of the seas, Aquaman, in Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as the planned Justice League film. Now, considering how well the Ben Affleck turned out to be (based on the images of the actor in costume released,) we’ll be giving Momoa’s casting a little bit of slack, even though we find it curious that DC has cast one of the few actors in Hollywood who looks a lot like Lobo as Aquaman.

It has been reported that Momoa’s Aquaman in the story (which bears a different name in the script) is not too happy with the destruction unleashed upon the Indian Ocean as a result of Zod’s World Engine during the events in Man of Steel. But don’t worry about his story taking up precious time away from the main plot, as it’s been said that the appearances of the other heroes (like Wonder Woman and Cyborg) will be brief, serving as jumping off points for the future Justice League film.

Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal managed to get Warner Bros. To confirm their plans over their DC Comics properties, showing that the studio is intent on catching up to Marvel as far as comic book movies are concerned.

According to Warner Bros., director Zack Snyder will be following up his Superman vs. Batman (tentative title) with a team-up movie – a full-blown Justice League movie. The Superman vs. Batman feature for its part is already shooting, with both Wonder Woman and Cyborg confirmed as having roles in the story.

Wonder Woman, as previously reported, is played by Gal Gadot, while the role of Cyborg went to Ray Fisher. They will be joining the previously confirmed Ben Affleck and the returning Henry Cavill as Batman and Superman, respectively. All actors will be reprising the roles for Justice League.

Additionally, the Wall Street Journal also cited a total of 9 DC features currently being planned and/or developed within Warner Bros.’ Proverbial walls, including The Metal Men, Shazam!, 100 Bullets, Fables, and the Joseph Gordon-Levitt-produced adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

The costume designer for Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman, Michael Wilkinson, has recently broken his silence over one of the bigger mysteries about the upcoming Man of Steel sequel: that of Wonder Woman’s costume. Of course, he’s also working on the respective costumes of the two titular heroes, but he has admitted that the outfit that’s going to be worn by Gal Gadot needs to be taken even more seriously:

“It’s a thrilling and slightly scary prospect of course,” says Wilkinson of dressing the comic-book heroine “It’s so important to get her right.”

“She really deserves to be presented onscreen in her full glory, so what I do is look at the history of the character that has been presented on the big screen, small screen, comic books, and graphic novels; we process it all.”

“Then we kind of put that aside and work out what is right for our film, for the cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is putting together. We try to create a Wonder Woman relevant for today’s audiences.”

When you get Andrea Romano, James Tucker and Jay Oliva together for a DC/Warner Bros animated project, it’s bound to be brilliant. Having worked together on previous animated films like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Parts 1 & 2, and the Flashpoint Paradox, they are now bringing their newest masterpiece, Justice League: War, to Digital Home Video, Blu-ray, and DVD. The Digital version is already available, while the other versions will be released tomorrow, Tuesday, February 4, 2014, in stores everywhere.

Justice League: War is adapted from the comic book series by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, 2011’s Justice League: Origin. The New 52 Justice League comes together for the first time in animated form to save the world from being decimated by the evil Darkseid, voiced by the always amazing Steve Blum. The rest of the cast are equally as amazing, including Jason O’Mara as Batman, Alan Tudyk as Superman, Michelle Monaghan as Wonder Woman, Christopher Gorham as Flash, Sean Astin as Shazam, Justin Kirk as Green Lantern, and making an incredible animation debut, Shemar Moore as Cyborg. You will discover, in our exclusive interview, how well Shemar Moore took control of the role of Cyborg, as explained by Andrea Romano, the casting and voice director for Justice League: War.

Justice League: War's Cyborg, played by Shemar Moore

Cyborg’s complete origin story is contained within the storyline of Justice League: War. And, in truth, the origin of the Justice League as a whole, has its roots in this movie. This is the first time many of the heroes are meeting each other, and it doesn’t necessarily feel like “Superfriends”, if you know what that 70’s and 80’s cartoon was like. As Producer James Tucker describes in our interview, they “don’t necessarily gel well”. There is conflict among the superheroes, and they have to come together as a team to battle Darkseid.

Wonder Woman takes on Darkseid in Justice League: War

Director Jay Oliva talks about how he thinks the Wonder Woman character in Justice League: War could be the model that a live-action Justice League film would want to adapt. In our interview with Jay, he talks about how Wonder Woman had “some of the best animation sequences” in the movie. She certainly pulls no punches when facing the parademons. This may be one of the most powerful versions of Wonder Woman we have seen in animated form.

Check out these interviews from ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell, at New York Comic Con, where he talked to Andrea, James, and Jay, respectively, about Justice League: War.

When you see Justice League: War on digital home video, Blu-ray or DVD, make sure you watch through the end credits for a special preview of another movie coming in the near future from DC and Warner Bros Home Entertainment. We won’t spoil it for you, but it isn’t Son of Batman, because everyone knows that film is coming out later this year.

Justice League: War is available now digitally, and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 4.

After all the casting rumors and speculation that saw names like Ben Kingsley and Bryan Cranston being bandied about, Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman film has finally revealed an unexpected casting choice for Lex Luthor: Jesse Eisenberg, who may have the acting chops for the role but many people consider too young (on the basis that some characters in the movie are depicted as older than their mainstream comic book versions).

Aside from Jesse Eisenberg, the Man of Steel sequel also casts Jeremy Irons in the role of Alfred the butler. The two actors will be joining a A-list cast that already includes Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and series newcomers Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” Snyder said. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

Action Comics #591

If the cover isn’t clear enough for you, this issue has Superman fighting Superboy while the Legion of Superheroes watch from a safe distance and bet on which one’s going to come out on top. The issue also has Krypto the super dog, and some semblance of comic book continuity. In the interest of saving you a lot of time, don’t bother wondering who won. I read the issue five times, used an excel spreadsheet to score each combatant, and I’m still not entirely sure who won.

As for why they are fighting, Superman #8 had Superman learning of a parallel reality where Clark Kent already had fully developed powers as a kid, became Superboy, and traveled to the future and joined the Legion of Super-Heroes. It turns out this was all part of an extremely roundabout ruse by a villain named The Time Trapper. He’s a guy who lives at the end of time and spends all day watching costumed teenagers through his time portals, apparently. TTT is so obsessed with those crazy kids at the Legion of Super-Heroes that he created an entire universe where Superboy exists and then had the Boy of Steel infiltrate the team. There was probably a less complicated way to get a spy in there, but you have to admire the guy’s insanity/dedication.

Anyway, Superman ends up in Superboy’s universe and meets alternate versions of his friends and family in Smallville, then gets into a fight with Superboy (who is under the control of The Time Trapper) and his intelligent flying dog Krypto. However, Superman then realizes Superboy is intentionally throwing the fight because he doesn’t want to obey the Traper’s orders anymore. So, Superboy turns good again and he and the Legion of Super-Heroes go off to fight The Time Trapper at the end of time, but they don’t let Superman come with them because he’s old and lame. (And to protect the sanctity of the timestream I guess.)

Superman annual 1

Superman Annual #1

This issue starts by focusing on Lois Lane as she visits a scientific installation. Anybody who knows the character will recognize that sentence as an indication that something is about to blow up soon. In this case, a certain Dr. Thomas Moyers is in the middle of a very scientific experiment in which he pumps some kind of energy or radiation into a chimp.

I’m going to give Dr. Moyers the benefit of the doubt and assume that the experiment is meant to harness ape tears in order to develop something important like cancer cure or free renewable energy, even though he’s probably just doing it because he’s completely insane.

As expected, something goes awry and they ended up pumping the ape with too much energy, resulting in the ape turning into a giant. At this point, some lab assistant who probably expected this to happen (but didn’t complain because he needed the money) proposed the name that he had in mind all along: Glorioso il Darkie!

Unfortunately, Dr. Moyers thought the name sounded stupid and kind of racist, so they went with “Titano.”. Enter Superman, who fights the increasingly gigantic and upset Titano in the middle of Metropolis until he manages to knock him out by throwing him in the river and handing him a giant electricity cable, which somehow doesn’t kill everyone else in the river at the time (or at least we don’t see their corpses). Lois then manages to calm Titano down because she was nice to him back at the lab, so obviously he loves her. Then Dr. Moyers, that jerk, shoots the incapacitated ape anyway and he shrivels down and dies in Lois’ arms. THE END.

superman 9

Superman #9

It’s the Joker. The Joker is in Metropolis, Mr. Words on The Cover. He’s right behind you. This issue starts with the Joker stealing a diamond with a Superman robot that launches poisonous laugh gas and has a nuclear bomb inside. That thing must have cost a fortune, which confirms my theory that the Joker is actually billionaire socialite Bruce Wayne in disguise.

Superman takes the nuclear super-laughbot to space before it blows up, then lands in the Mojave desert. By the time he gets back to Metropolis, the Joker has kidnapped Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane and Perry White and is making his getaway. However, Superman quickly catches him due to the Joker’s poor understanding of how his X-Ray vision works. As the Joker is being handed to the authorities, Superman asks him why he came to Metropolis and did all this, and the Joker replies: “Ooh, Superman… Why not?”

There’s a second short story in this issue starring Lex Luthor, who offers a random waitress a million dollars in exchange for spending a month with him. Luthor gives the conflicted waitress ten minutes to decide, but then leaves before the ten minutes are up, messing with her head (which was the idea of his little game all along). I tried it on Starbucks once, by asking the barista if she wants to be my girlfriend for a month in exchange for a million dollars. I gave her ten minutes to decide but it only took her 5 seconds before declining the offer and calling for security. I never saw her again after that.

adventures of superman 432

Adventures of Superman #432

After gang members burn down a building in Metropolis’ poor side, a concerned Lex Luthor, pillar of the community that he is, starts a rehabilitation program to save these young vandals from themselves. Of course, what Lex is really doing is handing them machine guns and training them to be more evil. Superman knows Luthor is doing this, but can’t prove it. You know, all of this could be solved if Superman just carried a recorder in his pocket and taped Luthor confessing his crimes. Unfortunately, underpants don’t have pockets.

Meanwhile, Lois Lane has an interview/date with Jose Delgado, an honest teacher who cares too damn much and just wants to get his students out of the gangs. Naturally, they both end up getting trapped inside a burning carpet factory by the same gang members Jose wanted to help, which happens in equal parts because Luthor wants Jose dead and because Lois can’t stay out of trouble for fifteen minutes. Superman swoops in and saves Lois, Jose, and also the gang members who accidentally locked themselves in their own death trap. He still can’t prove Luthor did shit, though, because the kids ain’t talking.

That would be it for now. Stay tuned for the 9th part next week. I literally have a truckload of these comics so we can keep this going for a LONG time. In the meantime, you can add me on Twitter: @mrmxy or read the stuff I wrote for Cracked at http://www.cracked.com/members/Mxy

It looks like all the attention that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel is getting isn’t enough to ensure that we’ll get our Batman vs. Superman fix within a couple of years, as TheWrap has recently reported that the film has been delayed until May 6, 2016. According to the report, over ten months of delay is the result of the studio being given enough time to “realise fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story.”

Disregarding the fact that we’ll have to wait a little bit more to get our Kryptonian vs. Dark Knight showdown, one can see that only good things can come out of the delay, if it really was meant to give the filmmakers time to polish everything. Additionally, the new release date will also make the box offices a very busy place as it puts DC’s powerhouse franchise against Marvel’s Phase 3 movie (which is unnamed as of this point).

Adventures of Superman #430

Adventures of Superman #430

Clark Kent goes through a bunch of personal problems in this issue, the first one as a result of missing a bunch of Daily Planet assignments because he was too busy flying around in his underwear and punching stuff. On top of that, he was also busy organizing his parents’ anniversary in Smallville but missed out on the party itself because he was too busy losing a fight against the C-list supervillain group the Fearsome Five.

The Fearsome Five is worth noting – they are enemies of the Teen Titans, but they ended up losing so much to the teenagers that they decided to pack up and go – all three of them. Did I mention that there are only three of them left but they kept the “Five” in their name? Maybe thinking of a new name is hard. Or maybe they’ve already created a website and paid for a domain name in advance and they don’t want that to go to waste.

So, anyway, The Fearsome Five, the geniuses that they are – decide that they have had enough of getting their asses kicked by the Teen Titans so they moved to Metropolis, which is home to a superhero who’s ten times more powerful than all the members of Teen Titans combined and it surprisingly worked well enough in their favor: because Superman is powered by rainbows, and when he’s sad there is nothing in the sky but rain.

A depressed Superman shows up at his parents’ home after everyone left the party and announces his decision to give up his Clark Kent identity. Pa Kent gives him a pep talk and convinces him Clark is just as important as Superman. The next day, a renewed Superman goes after the Fearsome Five and kicks all of the asses. He even makes some money from the fight by writing a headline article about it as Clark Kent, so everyone wins. (Except the Fearsome Five, and the editor being scammed by the reporter who secretly writes about himself.)

Action Comics 590

Action Comics #590

For the second time in one month, there’s an accident in a place Lois Lane is visiting. OK, now I’m sure she’s part of some sort of insurance scam. This time, Lois and Clark Kent are in a chemical plant when the railing breaks and Clark falls into a vat full of chemicals. Clark emerges with white skin and a smile frozen on his fa… nah, he’s all right. However, what no one knows is that this pool of chemicals is actually a supervillain named Chemo, who ended up here after getting defeated in another comic. After having Superman inside him, Chemo is able to replicate his Kryptonian powers and becomes a giant green version of the Man of Steel, naturally.

Super-Chemo flies to the headquarters of his old enemies the Metal Men and kidnaps the only Metal Woman, Platinum, for reasons that are unclear (I mean, neither of them has genitals). The Metal Men, by the way, are each named and have the properties of a different metal: Iron is a strongman, Mercury is irascible, Gold wears a monocle and calls everyone “chap,” and so on.

Superman and the Metal Men eventually defeat Chemo by shielding him from the sun’s rays, which is where he gets his mock-Superman powers. Superman then throws him to space, because that old strategy has never ended up causing any problems.

Superman 8

Superman #8

Superman is resting in Smallville after his fight with Rampage when some troublesome time-traveling teenagers called the Legion of Super-Heroes show up, claiming they knew him back when he was Superboy. Problem is, Superman never called himself Superboy when he was a kid, because that’s ridiculous. After a brief fight, Superman manages to convince the others that there’s no Superboy. Then Superboy shows up and freezes everyone with a stasis ray. What the Byrne is going on?

Adventures of Superman #431

Adventures of Superman #431

A dude named Doctor Stratos woke up one day thinking that he’s a Greek god, and since this was in 1987 and Youtube hasn’t been invented yet, he decides to stroke his ego by picking a fight with the governments of the world using a weather-controlling machine. He has to use the machine because Doctor Stratos doesn’t really have any powers.

The number 1 protector of Earth and its governments, Superman, decides to save the day by going around the planet punching the freaky weather into shape, until he realized that it’s easier to just punch the guy controlling the weather. As proof that Superman isn’t the only non-genius in this issue, Stratos tries to bring Superman down with a lightning strike while he’s near enough to also get hit. Naturally, Superman shrugged off the lightning while Stratos’ stupid flaming corpse falls into the sea.

Then, on the last page and after Superman has left, Stratos emerges from the sea transformed into a massive, muscly pink giant. Turns out he WAS a god after all! The issue ends with this powerful creature the size of a mountain standing in the middle of the sea and vowing to kill Superman.

Unfortunately, the dude never appeared again. I guess he couldn’t swim.

That would be it for now. Stay tuned for the 8th part next week. I literally have a truckload of these comics so we can keep this going for a LONG time. In the meantime, you can add me on Twitter: @mrmxy or read the stuff I wrote for Cracked at http://www.cracked.com/members/Mxy

Now that they’ve got the issue with Gal Gadot’s casting as Wonder Woman settled, new rumors are starting to surface, this time around concerning the amount of antagonists that the film will have. According to the rumors, Zack Snyder’s sequel to Man of Steel will feature not one, but TWO villains at the same time.

Superman_vs_Batman_38672

The rumor is hardly that surprising, and there’s really no reason why most people shouldn’t believe it (aside from the fact that it’s still unconfirmed), as increasing the number of villains for sequels is quite commonplace for comic book movies, with Sony’s Spider-Man films proving that it can work.

Another rumor states that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman will have an extended cameo, similar to the Black Widow’s extended cameos in the Iron Man films. This is no doubt useful as a setup for a solo film.
