The internet loves to joke that Cory in the House is an anime, but did you know that one of Disney Channel’s most well known late-2000s live action shows almost became one? An anime adaptation of the Miley Cyrus star vehicle Hannah Montana was in development at Toei Animation, the studio behind hits like Dragon Ball, Digimon and Sailor Moon, between 2009 and 2010. Unfortunately (?), the project was cancelled before ever being announced.

The news of its existence came from a … Dragon Ball forum in 2010. An animator working at Toei Animation’s branch in the Philippines spilled the beans on Dragon Ball: The Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, a then unannounced animated video game tie-in. While doing so, he inadvertently revealed that the studio was also working on a Hannah Montana project. As forum goers were bewildered by such an idea, the animator calling himself Wasted Wisher later explained that the project had been in development for the last year. Toei had encouraged their internal staff to come up with a visual style for the series and eventually narrowed the list down to four choices. Two were then made into promotional music videos. At the time of his May 2010 post, Toei Animation Philippines had just started production on the first episode. This would be the last time the Hannah Montana anime project was ever heard from.

Not convinced that Waster Wisher’s claims are true? Well, he was already established to be a legitimate source of information by then. He leaked design sheets for then upcoming Dragon Ball productions multiple times. It’s not that big of a leap either. Disney and Toei have collaborated with each other on a few different shows. In 2006, the two set out to create what would later be known as Fireball, a CG-animated series. More recently, in 2013 Toei and Disney set out to create Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, which was a major attempt at selling the Marvel formula in Asia.

While Wasted Wisher shared the scoop on the Hannah Montana anime’s production details, he was relatively quiet on discussing the content of the show. He once mentioned that it would be a closer adaptation of the source material than Toei’s other then contemporary re-imagining of an American property, Powerpuff Girls Z. He was later fired from Toei Animation Philippines after they realized he was behind the series of leaked documents.

You can only speculate as to why the Hannah Montana anime project didn’t move forward. By 2010, the writing was on the wall for the live action series. The show ended the following January. Maybe Disney just felt there wouldn’t have been enough momentum to carry on with an animated series? It’s also important to remember that this was around the time Miley Cyrus started to get into hot water due to her attempts to grow out of the Disney Channel mold. Perhaps Disney felt this was just more trouble than it was worth. It’s doubtful we’ll ever know what exactly happened behind the scenes to prevent this show, but hopefully what little Toei did produce does one day see the light of day.

There are plenty of idol anime shows, do you think the cast and characters of Hannah Montana would’ve been a good fit for one? Are you happy or sad that the project wasn’t seen all the way through? What other Disney Channel live action shows do you think would work well as an anime series? Leave a comment down below!

Walt Disney’s magical retelling of The Little Mermaid has recently turned 28 years old, so it is high time for a tribute and another retelling, so the studio’s digital wizards spent some time creating yet another retelling of the classic, only this time around they used emojis as the medium.

Clocking in at 4 minutes, 10 seconds, this retelling leaves out a lot of the details provided by the original animated film, but nonetheless manages to effectively convey the story of Ariel, Eric, Flounder, and Sebastian as they take on the evil Ursula – all in emoji form, of course. You can watch it all below:

According to an exclusive feature from The Hollywood Reporter, the House of Mouse is in the early development stages of a new The Rocketeer film, which was originally released in 1991 as an adaptation of the then-popular 1980s indie comic from Dave Stevens. The film was an homage to the serials of the 1930s and 1940s, and followed a character named Cliff Secord who is a stunt pilot that discovered a rocket pack and suit that allowed him to fight against mobsters and Nazis, while also eluding capture by the FBI.

The report said that the new The Rocketeer film will be both a sequel and a reboot, with the main protagonist being a “black female character.” Disney has hired Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to pen the script. Of note here is that the current working title of the project is “The Rocketeers.” The plural form of the title, coupled with the information that it will be a sequel and a reboot, kind of points towards the fact that Cliff Secord may still be in the film and that the franchise will not be rebooted completely from scratch.

Disney XD has just unleashed a very, very short teaser clip for the upcoming animated series adaptation of the Big Hero 6 film (which in turn is based on a Marvel comic book property) on Youtube. The clip is only 14 seconds long, but shows enough to give viewers an idea of the animation style (and quality) that they can expect from the series when it debuts on Disney XD this November.

Big Hero 6: The Series is set after the events of the film, with the fourteen year old tech genius Hiro now facing the challenges of school life at the prestigious San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. What makes school life even more challenging is that outside of school, things tend to get dangerous and it is up to Hiro, his trusted companion Baymax, and loyal friends Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, and Go Go to face a colorful array of science-enhanced villains that threaten San Fransokyo while still having enough time for homework.

During their latest financial briefings, The Walt Disney Company has announced that it’s ending its agreement with Netflix to stream the studio’s films. Instead, they’ll launch their own Disney streaming subscription platform in 2019. The service will play host to upcoming movies like Toy Story 4, the sequel to Frozen, and the live-action Lion King remake. In addition, Disney is also preparing new original movies, TV shows, and short-form content, as well as material shared from its linear television services Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior.

Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, says they’ll be aiming for a global audience with this initiative, though entry will vary “based on existing distribution agreements and different market dynamics.” In the United States, the company claims it’ll become the exclusive home “for subscription-video-on-demand viewing of the newest live action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar.”

“We’ve got this unbelievably passionate base of Disney consumers worldwide, and in virtually all of our businesses — except theme parks — we’ve never had the opportunity to connect with them directly or know who they are,” he says. “It’s high time we got into the business…Once we do, the monetization possibilities are extraordinary for this company.”

The company hasn’t determined if Lucasfilm and Marvel will be a part of this, or eventually made into their own individual services. “There’s been talk about launching a proprietary Marvel service and Star Wars service, but we’re mindful of the volume of product that would go into those services. And we want to be careful about that. We’ve also thought about including Marvel and Star Wars as part of the Disney-branded service. But there we want to be mindful of the Star Wars fan, the Marvel fan, and to what extent those fans either overlap with Disney fans or are completely separate and incremental to Disney. So it’s all in discussion.”

Disney wouldn’t talk pricing for the new streaming service, though Iger did say it’ll be a balancing act so as to not greatly impact their existing television business.

To help build this new service, Disney has agreed to pay $1.58 billion to purchase 42% of BAMTech, the company behind streaming platforms for a number of professional sports leagues. Disney already owned 33% of the business, but wanted a larger share. The company will also use that back end to power an ESPN online platform.

With the fall Disney XD premiere of Big Hero 6: The Series drawing ever closer, Disney Television Animation has shared the opening animation sequence and story synopsis for the upcoming adaptation of Disney’s 2014 CG-animated film. However, unlike the movie, the series is 2D-animated.

Disney XD’s animated series Big Hero 6, picks up immediately following the events of the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning feature film and continues the adventures and friendship of Hiro, the fourteen-year-old orphaned tech genius and Baymax, his very special plus-sized inflatable healthcare companion. Big Hero 6: The Series U.S. Premiere Fall 2017.

As the new kid at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro faces daunting academic challenges at the prestigious “nerd school” and the social trials of being the “little man on campus.” Luckily, Hiro has his brains, his ingenuity and his best friend bot to help him find his way. But it’s off campus where things get dangerous. Along with neat freak Wasabi, bubbly mad scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no nonsense Go Go, the friends form an unlikely, but awesome super hero team – Big Hero 6. Together they face madness and mayhem as a colorful array of science-enhanced villains threaten San Fransokyo.

Disney’s pretty confident in the success of Big Hero 6: The Series. They’ve already greenlit production on a second season of episodes. The first season consists of 21 episodes.

Are you hyped for Disney XD’s Big Hero 6: The Series? Do you prefer the CG animation in the movie or the show’s 2D animation? Are you an old school Marvel Big Hero 6 fan annoyed that the comic has mostly been forgotten? Leave a comment down below!

Some may call it digital karma, but the normally lawsuit-happy entertainment giants Disney and Marvel are currently saddled with a lawsuit alleging that they have infringed the intellectual property of the Oscar-winning motion picture tech company MOVA Contour Reality Capture, in relation to the allegedly stolen technology used to make two of their most recent blockbuster pictures—Guardians of the Galaxy and Beauty and the Beast.

The lawsuit was filed last July 17, 2017, and alleges that the defendants are fully aware of the proprietary technology they used to be owned by Rearden LLC and Rearden Mova LLC, the plaintiffs in the action, and that the company supplying the technology to Disney and Marvel had stolen it from a secured storage facility.

The MOVA Contour technology is used primarily to superimpose captured facial performances onto CG faces, and has been used in numerous other high profile productions such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Tron: Legacy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1 and 2, and for a more relevant example – The Avengers, where it was used to project Mark Ruffalo’s facial expressions onto the Hulk CG model.

According to the complaint, while Disney had legitimately licensed use of the MOVA Contour system from Rearden, it was only for four films. The problem is that in 2012, Rearden employee Greg LaSalle allegedly sold off the MOVA Contour system without Rearden’s knowledge to Digital Domain 3.0, and subsequently offered the technology to Disney and its former Lucasfilm subsidiary Industrial Light and Magic in 2013. Both parties eventually dropped out of the negotiations after finding out that Rearden has sent a Cease and Desist order to LaSalle, notifying that they are the owners of the MOVA Contour system.

However, a Chinese company affiliated with Digital Domain 3.0 then claimed that they have bought the MOVA Contour system technology and licensed it to Digital Domain 3.0. “LaSalle had access to the secure storage facility where the physical MOVA Contour apparatus was kept, and assisted DD3 in taking the patented MOVA Contour physical apparatus and copies of the copyrighted Contour Program,” according to the lawsuit. Digital Domain 3.0 then began offering the MOVA Contour system to studios, which included Disney, who went on to use the tech for their films Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy.

For more details, you can read the complaint.

The Marvel Animation panel at D23 revealed some cools news about the latest caped cartoons headed to Disney XD. The brand new Spidey series, dubbed Marvel’s Spider-Man, got its premier date and voice cast. We also learned that the network has given the go-ahead to season 3 of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and that’s there’s going to a LEGO Guardians TV special.

Just in time to capitalize on the summer blockbuster success of Homecoming, the new Spider-Man series will have a one-hour debut on Disney XD on August 19th at 7AM EST. It’ll also be available on the Disney XD app and video-on-demand bright and early at 12:01AM. The series sees Peter Parker try to juggle being a superhero while going to Horizon High, a high school for brilliant young scientific minds. It’s not an easy task keeping your grades up while you have battle super villains and keep your best friend from becoming one of them.

Marvel’s Spider-Man will star Robbie Daymond as Peter Parker. Max Mittelman plays Harry Osborn. The rest of the cast consists of Nadji Jeter as Miles Morales, Melanie Minichino as Anya Corazon, Fred Tatasciore as Max Modell, Laura Bailey as Gwen Stacy, Nancy Linari as Aunt May, Patton Oswalt as Uncle Ben, Scott Menville as Doc Ock, John DiMaggio as The Jackal, Alastair Duncan as Vulture. Even Marvel’s chief creative officer Joe Quesada, who is also executive producing the series, gets a cameo as the coffee shop owner Joe. You can read more about the production side of the series in our earlier coverage.

Late last month, Marvel began streaming a short to promote the series:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is coming back with a third season called Mission Breakout! – which just so happens to the name of a recently opened ride at Disney California Adventue. “The third season will find the Guardians gaining fame and fortune, but quickly knocked back on their heels after being framed by the Collector. The Guardians will travel to new universes, stage a massive sting operation inside the Nova Corps, and expose a Secret Invasion years in the making. A little bad and a little good – all in a day’s work,” says the press release. No word yet on when the show will return to Disney XD.

That’s not all the Guardians news. Marvel and LEGO have partnered up to produce LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thanos Threat, a brand new 22-minute special. The release window and distribution platform weren’t shared, but a summary was: “When Thanos, Ronan, Nebula and the Ravagers seek to possess the Build Stone – a powerful and creative relic – the fate of the universe depends on the Guardians of the Galaxy to protect it. The platform and release timing details are forthcoming.”

At the most recent D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, iconic actress Whoopi Goldberg has been named as a Disney Legend, mostly for lending her voice to two popular Disney villains – Shenzi the hyena in The Lion King, and Stretch the gummy purple octopus in Pixar’s Toy Story 3. Being named a Disney Legend is another notch under Goldberg’s belt, as she is already one of the few artists who qualifies as an EGOT (an acronym used for people who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award.) This means she can also add being a Disney Legend to the acronym, making her a DEGOT (or is it a LEGOT?)

“Disney and I go way back, since I was a little kid, I mean way back,” Goldberg said. “So it’s beyond an honor and a joy to become a Disney Legend because everybody knows I love Disney, Disneyland, Disney World, Disney movies, Disney toys and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique! What’s better than this for a Disney-phile? Absolutely NOTHING!”

Aside from her main voice roles in Toy Story 3 and The Lion King, Whoopi Goldberg has also guest voiced on Disney Junior’s intergalactic animated series Miles From Tomorrowland, and had a recurring role as Magic Mirror on Disney Channel’s The 7D. Among her many voiceover credits, Goldberg has also voiced roles for Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken, Japanese animated feature Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and the classic 1995 series Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist.

In support of the upcoming refresh of the DuckTales animated series, Disney XD has released a new app for iOS and Android. Titled “DuckTales: All Ducked Out!,” the app gives fans the ability to mix and match hairstyles, accessories, colors, backgrounds, and more in order to create a DuckTales-inspired cartoon alter ego.

As expected of any mobile app, DuckTales: All Ducked Out! allows users to share the results of their creativity online and via social media, so that friends can see just how much they are into DuckTales (and they’ll probably give new meaning to the word “DuckFace” while they are at it.)

The DuckTales animated series, on the other hand, will be making its grand return to the small screens on Saturday, August 12 via an hour long TV movie. The special will bring back iconic characters such as Duckburg’s most famous trillionaire Scrooge McDuck, his mischief-making triplet grandnephews – Huey, Dewey and Louie, temperamental nephew Donald Duck and the trusted McDuck Manor team: big-hearted, fearless chauffer/pilot Launchpad McQuack; no-nonsense housekeeper Mrs. Beakley; and Mrs. Beakley’s granddaughter, Webby Vanderquack, resident adventurer and the triplet’s newfound fierce friend.

According to a recent report by Cartoonbrew, Disney and Pixar are currently facing a lawsuit from experienced child development specialist Denise Daniels, with the lawsuit alleging that the massively successful CG film Inside Out was based at least in part on her project titled “The Moodsters.”

The Moodsters project features five main characters that represent various emotions: happiness (yellow), anger (red), sadness (blue), fear (green), and love (pink). In comparison, Inside Out also featured representations of various emotions, this time consisting of joy (yellow), sadness (blue), anger (red), fear (purple), and disgust (green).

Unexpectedly, Daniels is not filing a copyright infringement case. Instead, she alleges that Disney and Pixar have breached an implied-in-fact contract, referring to the California Civil Code section 1621 in which “an implied contract is one, the existence and terms of which are manifested by conduct.”

Daniels alleges that Inside Out’s use of several ideas that she developed and used in The Moodsters facilitates an implied-in-fact contract that makes her entitled to compensation and credit from Disney and Pixar, as it is the custom in the entertainment industry that “creators…provide ideas and materials to producers and studios in exchange for compensation and credit” if said ideas and/or materials are used.

The lawsuit also claims that Daniels discussed the Moodsters with Disney CFO Thomas Skaggs in 2008, and that she spoke “for an extended period of time” with Inside Out director Pete Docter about her characters and concept. Finally, Daniels stressed that no other Disney or Pixar animated feature has ever used anthropomorphized emotions as characters, which imply uniqueness of her concept.
