Greatest TV Cartoon Theme Songs #4: Phineas and Ferb

Ah, summertime! The days of warmth, no homework, swimming, amusement parks, and getting more done in one day than most of us do in a lifetime. Oh, that last one only applies to Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, the most inventive and innovative step-brothers ever to avoid being busted by their sister, Candace. This show manages to put more in one episode than you can fit in a month. In the same respect, the upbeat, fast-talking theme song covers many of the adventures of Phineas and Ferb, all within a New York minute (ok, 57 seconds).

Doofenshmirtz and Perry

The theme song, when it is not in it’s edited form for the opening of the show, is actually a full song called, ‘Today is Going to be a Great Day’, written by the creators of the show, Jeff Marsh and Dan Povenmire, along with the guys from Bowling for Soup, an actual rock band with many hits on the Billboard Charts. Bowling for Soup performs the song (edited) at the beginning of every show, and also on the soundtrack CD. Not every cartoon has a soundtrack. Phineas and Ferb has one because the music plays a big part in the show, and the creators do a great job making the music fit in perfectly with the actions of the characters. Typically, Dan and Jeff put together a song in 1 hour (they both come from very musical backgrounds), and hand it off to Danny Jacob on a Friday, who is the composer of the music for the show. Danny puts his special orchestrated touches and production value into the song, and has it ready by Monday.

Busted Dance

It’s nice to watch this show to see what Phineas and Ferb are going to create, and how Candace is going to try to get her Mom to see them in action so she can bust them. The sub-plot of Perry the Platypus and Dr. Doofenshmirtz is fun to watch as well, because inevitably, by the end of the show, one of Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s creations ends up making Phineas and Ferb’s creation disappear, just in time for Mom to see nothing.

There’s 104 days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it
So the annual problem for our generation
Is finding a good way to spend it

Like maybe…
Building a rocket
Or fighting a mummy
Or climbing up the Eiffel Tower

Discovering something that doesn’t exist (Hey! )
Or giving a monkey a shower

Surfing tidal waves
Creating nanobots
Or locating Frankenstein’s brain (It’s over here! )

Finding a dodo bird
Painting a continent
Or driving your sister insane (Phineas! )

As you can see
There’s a whole lot of stuff to do
Before school starts this fall (Come on Perry)

So stick with us ’cause Phineas and Ferb
Are gonna do it all
So stick with us ’cause Phineas and Ferb are
Gonna do it all!
(Mom! Phineas and Ferb are making a title sequence! )
