Phineas and Ferb’s success may guarantee airtime until 2014

A recent Variety.com article has revealed that Disney execs are pleased with the massive success of the Phineas and Ferb franchise, and has made plans to produce more spin-offs and merchandising opportunities in line with the show’s fourth season renewal, with estimates that the broad appeal and popularity of the show ensures that it will stay on the air all the way to 2014.

Phineas and Ferb is currently the number 1 animated series in all of television among kids aged 6-11, but it is also one of the shows on Disney XD that is being watched by adults (it is estimated that 20% of the show’s audience in its 9PM timeslot is made up of adult viewers). Phineas and Ferb, with its ability to attract both young and mature viewers is frequently touted as “the next Simpsons”, and while it’s still too early to tell if Phineas and Ferb will reach the levels of success and staying power that Groening’s creation has achieved, Disney’s prediction that the Phineas business is expected to triple in 2012 sets it on the right path.

According to Disney Channels Worldwide CCO Gary marsh:

“It’s a little bit of comparing apples to oranges, (but) we can look at ‘High School Musical’ and ‘Hannah Montana’ in the rear-view mirror and see how they grew into multimillion-dollar businesses. ‘Phineas’ is on that trajectory.”
