The next Phineas and Ferb DVD release is coming to stores this Tuesday, February 26, 2013. It’s called Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents, and as you can guess from the name, it features episodes where animals other than a famous green platypus are foiling the evil plots of their villain counterparts. This DVD includes the special 2-part episode, Where’s Perry?
We will be giving you a full review of the DVD on Monday, to prepare you for what you can expect when you purchase your own copy on Tuesday.
ToonBarn has once again been given the awesome opportunity to speak with Phineas and Ferb’s creators, Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh. You may recall we spoke with them last year, when The Perry Files DVD was released. If you didn’t get a chance to see that interview, you can catch it here:
ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell spoke with Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh recently, and here’s that conversation:
Marc: In the episode, Isabella and the Temple of Sap (which is on the Animal Agents DVD), Phineas, Ferb, and Perry all have just cameo roles, and both Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Major Monogram were left out completely. Will there be other episodes with limited roles for the main characters, like this one?
Dan: We will do it again, in fact, I think we have one coming up.
Swampy: As long as we’re getting laughs, we’re good.
Dan: The real thought behind that episode is that we’re pairing two 11-minute episodes together, and we wanted to do two 11-minutes that took place at the same time. In one episode, Isabella would go off and do something, and in the next episode we would see what it is that she went through to do this little thing for Phineas. So, it just necessarily excluded most of the other characters from it. We actually have one this season with exactly the same thing, 2 episodes that take place at exactly the same time. One 11-minute follows the other. I think it’s called “B” Day. We finished it, but we have two that are very much like that.
Marc: Will it be focusing on minor characters again?
Dan: They’re both focusing on Isabella and the Fireside Girls. And we have one that is focused entirely on the delivery man.
Swampy: It’s called Delivery of Destiny.
Dan: Paul, the delivery man, was played by Christian Slater. He came and delivered something to Phineas and Ferb, and then we just followed him on his day. So, all the other characters have very minor parts.
Marc: Oh, that’s really cool.
Dan: Yeah, it’s fun to sort of shake it up and tell different kinds of stories.
Marc: Alright, so when you guys are in the writers’ room, and you’re deciding which animal will be the next OWCA Agent, is there any animal that’s been turned down, like “there’s no way that would work”?
Dan: Ha, ha, ha.
Swampy: I don’t think we’ve said, “No”. We have a whale and…
Dan: … a rhinoceros…
Swampy: … a Gnu…
Dan: Yeah, we’ve done a whale, a rhinoceros, and I think we’ve done an elephant.
Swampy: We’ve even done a snail.
Dan: Yes, so… “No”, we haven’t turned anybody down yet.
Swampy (in the voice of Major Monogram): The OWCA is an equal opportunity employer. There is no animal we will not consider for Agent status.
Marc: That’s great!
Marc: Ok, the last time we talked I asked if it was OK to show the “Animatin’ Rap” video you guys made to show how Phineas and Ferb episodes are made.
Dan: And… did that work?
Marc: Yes, it worked out great. In fact, there was a question that a reader (Christian) had posted about where they might be able to see a video showing Dee Bradley Baker performing the voice of Perry the Platypus “LIVE”, so they could see how he does it.
Dan: He’s actually a vampire that doesn’t show up on film. So,…
Swampy: We assumed everybody knew that.
Dan: It’s strange, I don’t think we’ve ever videotaped him doing that.
Swampy: Not to my knowledge.
Dan: You know what, if they search for the Comic Con panels, the Phineas and Ferb Comic Con Panels on YouTube, usually there’s somebody videotaping there, and he has done it in front of an audience. If they just want proof that he can do it, there’s proof there. It’s a weird thing to watch him do it.
Marc: I also think there was an interview once when you were doing the Phineas and Ferb national tour with Dee Bradley Baker doing Perry’s voice in front of the Platybus.
Dan: Yes, in New York, there’s that one too.
Marc: Would we be able to post the “Making of Video” for your 1-hour process for writing a song for an episode?
Dan: Yeah, it’s OK with us.
Swampy: And I think it has been posted. I re-shared it (on Twitter), ’cause someone else had posted it. I saw the link, so I re-shared it.
Dan: You know, we’re not lawyers…
Marc: Ha, ha, ha.
Dan: So, it’s perfectly OK with us.
You heard them. From the DVD Extras on “A Very Perry Christmas”, here is the “Making of the Floor After Floor Song (a.k.a. Keep on Buildin’)”:
Marc: Switching gears here. The Phineas and Ferb crossover episode, “Mission Marvel”, is coming out this summer. Is there a chance we might be able to get a preview?
Dan: Well, not yet. Because it’s not all finished. But, we’ll see what we can do. It turned out really good. I am so happy with where we are on it. I think it’s going to one of our best episodes of the year. I feel like it’s a really good Phineas episode, and at the same time, it’s a really good Marvel episode. I think it just turned out great.
Swampy: They did a brief trailer of it, but they’re probably going to ask us as soon as we get footage back to cut something into a promo they can use. We haven’t done it yet.
Marc (tongue-in-cheek): Will there be a pretty strong promotional push for this one?
Dan: I’m assuming so.
Swampy: I don’t think we’re going to promote that at all.
Dan: You don’t think so?
Dan: You don’t think they want those ratings?
Marc: Ha, ha, ha.
Dan: You’re probably right. They’ll probably just sneak it on the air at 4 in the morning.
Swampy: The other departments and all the executives, it’s amazing. Every place we go at Disney events, we have people come up to us and say, “Oh my God, I saw the Marvel thing… it’s AMAZING! I can’t believe it!” That’s really good.
Dan: It’s almost like they had been expecting it NOT to be good. (Both laughing) It was like they always had this surprised look, “Oh my God, it was so good!”
Swampy: “We thought it was going to suck!”
Marc: Last question – on Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s Daily Dirt (a YouTube series), you recently talked about Bacon and Honey Boo-Boo. I was wondering what are your true thoughts on Bacon?
Dan (in Doofenshmirtz’s voice): You know, I have Bacon every morning, but I have Turkey Bacon, because I don’t like all that fat. I like my Bacon more lean.
Dan (back to his real voice): So, that’s a true story.
We want to thank Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh for spending some time with us again. We are looking forward to more Phineas and Ferb episodes for this season, the next being “Sidetracked” on The Disney Channel, March 1 at 9:30 PM, and on Disney XD, Saturday, March 2, at 8 AM, with a Special Platypus Day, as well as “Mission Marvel” this summer, which crosses the Phineas and Ferb Universe with the Marvel Universe.
Also, look for our full preview of the Phineas and Ferb DVD: Animal Agents coming on Monday… on ToonBarn.
