Dora the Explorer Gets a New Dimension

Award-winning Chicago-based studio Calabash Animation has given Nickelodeon’s hit preschool show Dora the Explorer a new breath of life, by way of a new opening that blends 2D Dora, Boots the Monkey, Swiper, Diego, and the Pirate Pigs and all the cartoon cast with new CG 3D backgrounds.

“Nickelodeon was looking to take the show open a step further cinematically and make it more engaging,” says Sean Henry of Calabash. “They gave us a framework of what they wanted, but allowed us the creative freedom to explore in a fun way.”

The seamless integration of Dora’s 2D world with CG 3D was no mean feat, according to animation director Jessica Plummer:

“Getting the backgrounds to look just right with Dora and the other characters, while still creating very dynamic scenes, took quite a bit of back and forth and brainstorming. But in the end all those revisions and planning really paid off.”
