While people are still drooling over Golden Frieza making his/her/its way to Dragon Ball Xenoverse, another much-anticipated Dragon Ball Z game is generating buzz via a set of in-game screenshots: Arc System Works’ 2D fighter for the Nintendo 3DS, Extreme Butouden.

The screenshots show off the kind of quality 2D spritework that people expect from the makers of the Guilty Gear and Blazblue franchise, and we can bet that it’s going to look particularly good on the 3DS’ small screen. Content-wise, the screenshots show off tag pairings and characters that you rarely (if ever) see as playable on DBZ games, including Master Roshi’s pet, Turtle.

You can check out the screenies below:

Warner Bros. Animation has released a new clip for the next episode of Teen Titans Go!, which is set to air this coming Thursday, April 2, at 6:00/5:00c on Cartoon Network. Titled ‘Beast Man,’ the episode shines a spotlight on the Titans’ lean green, shape-changing machine as he discovers yet another aspect of his powers.

In ‘Beast Man,’ Beast Boy accidentally discovers the ability to change into an adult man. Which, to be frank, actually makes a lot of sense. If he can transform into something as different as an Elephant, why not something that is basically his own body, only older.

You can check out the clip, as well as a bunch of new images below:

Canada’s Big Bad Boo Studios has recently teamed up with public broadcaster TVO in order to develop a new animated series based on the preschool property 16 Hudson, which itself is based loosely on the animated miniseries Lili and Lola, which focuses on two silly sisters who cohabitate in a small apartment in the big city.

The 16 Hudson series will be expanding the world built by Lili and Lola, featuring new characters and locations within the sisters’ busy neighborhood. The show will consist of 7 minute episodes and will showcase diversity by featuring special holidays like the Chinese New Year, Norooz, and Diwali.

16 Hudson will be Big Bad Boo’s fifth original program, after shows like 1001 Nights and Mixed Nuts.

These days, any Hollywood live action adaptation of Japanese animated properties, will automatically earn the scrutiny of viewers, as the string of failures (both in terms of shoddy products and projects that were consigned to development limbo) have already left a bad taste in people’s mouths.

However, it seems like Sony hasn’t been paying attention (or they’re extremely confident), as Variety has just reported that the studio has acquired the movie rights to Harmony Gold’s Robotech franchise (which in turn is just a Frankenstein localization of several Tatsunoko-produced mecha anime; Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.) and they are allegedly planning to use the license for a live action movie.

“‘Robotech’ is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” said production chief Michael De Luca. “ With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, ‘Robotech’ offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”

“I’m thrilled to be back in business with Sony Pictures and Gianni and I look forward to working with the studio on this global franchise-driven opportunity,” said Canton, who ran the studio in the 1990s. “‘Robotech’ is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”

“When the rights to ‘Robotech’ became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals and powerful themes,” said Nunnari. “The characters in ‘Robotech’ wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.”

Some background from Cartoon Brew:

Just a short while ago, the Angry Birds were flocking everywhere. They had their own official store in Helsinki, an animated TV show, and were being endorsed and celebrated by the likes of Conan O’Brien and Justin Bieber. We got Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Transformers, Angry Birds Hot Wheels, and Angry Birds Jenga. There were even those who even dressed as Angry Birds.

Rovio, however, isn’t giving up on the characters anytime soon. In fact, they’ve doubled down on the franchise, revealing that the budget of the upcoming Angry Birds animated feature, due out May 20, 2016, is a whopping $80 million.

Furthermore, they’re financing the entire production of the film themselves. This is not an $80 million American studio film, but an $80 million dollar film made by a Finnish studio, which hired Sony Pictures Imageworks to produce the animation. When all is said and done, it will become the most expensive Finnish film ever made by more than $70 million.

However in a Opinion Piece over at AWN:

Three years ago Rovio’s film made sense. The brand was strong, and to establish themselves as a truly competitive entertainment company, Rovio diversified. Following very closely with a Disney plan, they expanded into cartoons, sold merchandise, and even built Angry Birds theme parks. However, unlike Disney, they struggled to diversify their content and characters. Now I wonder if they suffer one key weakness. Though Rovio had a successful game, did they really build brand loyalty?

The ecosystem of Rovio is vastly different from gaming consoles of old. Angry Birds was born on a platform akin to space. With seemingly infinite possibilities, players are unlikely to stay in one world very long. This leaves little time for emotional connections to form. As sales lag now, I wonder if players ever cared. Did they see the personalities of the birds and relate to them? Did they strive to reclaim the stolen eggs from the pigs? Or did they simply like smashing objects into other objects?

Classic consoles like Nintendo captivated players at a young age with Mario and Zelda. The old games and consoles had many benefits for building brand loyalty. Those games had worlds to be explored and characters audiences could connect with. Nintendo also locked in player loyalty. If you purchased an NES you had to purchase Nintendo games. You would play with a lot of Nintendo characters, ingraining them into your childhood memory. Today millions will still buy a game just because one of these Nintendo characters is on the cover. Yet slow console sales and small game libraries finally led even Nintendo to embrace mobile games.

If the upcoming film is to be the Angry Birds’ saving grace, Rovio should be concerned. With half their games just licensed reskins of their original (Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Star Wars), they have done little to build a compelling world for players to explore. So what is the story of this film? And who cares about seeing it?

I’m of the mind that Rovio doesn’t have much of a choice. Take it this way – You want to get that brand and keep it in peoples minds. The biggest question is what story are you willing to tell. And that is a much more difficult answer when the audience realizes that the story cant fit ninety minutes.

But lets give it the benefit of the doubt here. Lets see the advertising campaigns first, if they still go towards the same Dreamworks stuff or they do something dramatically different.

A group of animators with decades of combined experience at Pixar, DreamWorks and Disney are developing a series for young adults featuring characters from backgrounds “under-represented” in animation.

The Book of Mojo, described as an urban fantasy set in the near future, has been created by Everett Downing, whose film credits include Hollywood blockbusters such as Ratatouille, Wall-E, Toy Story 3 and Ice Age.

It follows Creepy, a 13-year-old runaway witch, and Mojo, a seven-foot tall enchanted statue, as they travel through a city transformed by magic, while trying to avoid a magical crime syndicate and the police.

The animators, a number of whom currently work at studios such as DreamWorks Animation and Cartoon Network, have set up an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise money to produce a 3D CGI-animated pilot.

DreamWorks Animation’s Home just had a strong overseas debut as it managed to gross $19.2 million via a number of markets, a full week before its U.S. debut. The total cume includes the U.K., which managed to gross $9.3 million. Russia’s $4.2 million was also included, followed by Spain with $2.4 million and Australia with $2.3 million. The strong opening is good news for DreamWorks Animation, especially since it is going to be the studio’s sole feature film release for this year.

For the uninitiated, Home focuses on an optimistic but inept alien race called the Boov. Under the guidance of its leader Captain Smek, the Boov invade the Earth in order to hide from their mortal enemy and make it their new home. Under the mistaken assumption that they are doing humans a favor, the Boov start to relocate earth’s population to a Desert Planet. Only a resourceful teenage girl named Tip manages to avoid capture. In order to locate her mother Lucy, Tip joins forces with a banished Boov named Oh, who in turn has accidentally notified his race’s mortal enemies of their new location.
