The western animation industry has taken one of the biggest blows in its history. And the VFX market is heading towards dislocation.

PDI/Dreamworks Redwood, was one of  the biggest CGI production companies in history. They produced some of the most high end CGI this side of ILM, and they were the best in the business from 1983 to 1992. Some of those fantastic works pre Dreamworks will be shown to show what used to be the epic feel, and wonderful production – the hype before the event.

But here is the bad news:

DreamWorks just announced to it staff that it will shut down one of its main studios, PDI DreamWorks, in Redwood City, California. The closing of that studio will begin immediately. The beleaguered animation studio also announced that 500 jobs will be eliminated, far more than the previously expected number of layoffs. The studio is cutting back its slate to two DreamWorks-produced films per year: one original film and one sequel.

To save money, the studio will begin outsourcing production for some of its films, like, Captain Underpants, schedule for 2017. Flms such as that will be produced “at a significantly lower cost.” The new release line-up for the studio is as follows: Kung Fu Panda (March 18, 2016), Trolls (November 4, 2016), Boss Baby (January 13, 2017), The Croods 2 (December 22, 2017), The Larrikins (February 16, 2018), and How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 29, 2018).

Variety:

DreamWorks Animation’s marketing head Dawn Taubin and chief operating officer Mark Zoradi are departing. And Vice Chairman Luke Coleman is retiring from his post.

The job loss figure is significantly higher than the estimate of a workforce reduction in the 150 to 400 range that emerged Monday. The layoffs began last week.

The studio said Thursday it expects to incur a pre-tax charge against earnings of approximately $290 million in connection with the restructuring and related items.

Deadline:

The company also told analysts in a conference call that it will take a $80 million write-down for the underperformance of Penguins of Madagascar as well as Peabody and Sherman.

“The number one priority for DreamWorks Animation’s core film business is to deliver consistent creative and financial success,” CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says. “I am confident that this strategic plan will deliver great films, better box office results, and growing profitability across our complementary businesses.”

This is one of the biggest news stories since the collusion news between this same company, Disney, and others. Its has become apparent that the merger talks were to save the company – it couldn’t survive as it was, and now you see the result.

PDI was the thing that brought the Hype Machine to TV. CGI that was 10 years ahead of everything. It is sad to see it go. But let remember what it did, before it helped in Shrek…

And this is the intro that made them great. One of the greatest intros of all time.

It is sad to see them go. What a sad day in North American Animation…

…yet again.

More as it arrives.

The LA Times states:

In a move to cut operating costs, the Glendale studio intends to significantly reduce the size of its workforce, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the plans.

Layoffs are expected to include animators, story-board artists and other production personnel and support staff at the studio’s Glendale and Redwood City facilities, which employ about 2,200 workers.

A spokesman for DreamWorks said the company “does not comment on rumor and speculation.”

The restructuring comes after a turbulent period for DreamWorks Animation, which has been attempting to diversify its operations following a rocky period at the box office that has eroded profits and caused a sharp decline in the company’s share price.

The company, founded two decades ago, has struggled to replicate the success of its earlier “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Madagascar” movies.

The company has reported three write-downs in the last two years for “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” “Rise of the Guardians” and “Turbo.”

The last two times he did voices in animation was for Ghibi’s The Wind Rises and Jock the Hero Dog:

Homeland star Mandy Patinkin is in final negotiations to voice Papa Smurf in Sony Pictures Animations’ reboot of The Smurfs.

Kelly Asbury, the animation vet who was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for Shrek 2and directed the animated comedy Gnomeo & Juliet, is helming the feature project, which is an all-animated venture.

SPA previously made two Smurfs movies as live-action/animation hybrids. (The two together grossed around $910 million worldwide.)

This one, however, will be fully animated, something more in line with the designs, tone and look of the works of Peyo, the creator of the popular blue-skinned munchkins.

The Hollywood Reporter Broke the story.

I really didnt know Arthur was still going – now in its 16th season?!

In the drama-filled “Fountain Abbey,” Muffy finds herself absolutely devastated when she learns her great-great grandmother, Mary Alice, wasn’t royalty at all. She was a common maid — oh, the indignity! However, through reading Mary Alice’s diary, Muffy is transported back in time to the famous English estate where her ancestor worked. There she discovers the surprising story behind her humble roots.

“An abbey in jeopardy, a lady’s maid causing trouble, and the Dowager Countess unimpressed by all,” says Carol Greenwald, senior executive producer of Arthur. “Sound familiar? We hope ‘Fountain Abbey’ will be a show the whole family can enjoy together!”

“PBS is committed to engaging families with content that is educational and entertaining and this new episode of Arthur is no exception,” comments Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Media, PBS. “’Fountain Abbey’ promises to delight not only children, but an entire generation of Arthur fans that grew up with the series and can appreciate the humor and fun of the Downton Abbey-inspired references.”

They did spoofs of Dawson’s Creek, and they also did a very inspired one dealing with Bevis and Butthead – while the Buster spin-off wasn’t with out controversy (the two moms episode), its greatest victory as a franchise was the episode with Fred Rodgers – his last major appearance for PBS.

Animation distributor GKIDS has announced that it has entered into a distribution agreement with Studio Ghibli for the North American rights to the upcoming animated feature When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie). Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty) and based on the British children’s novel by Joan G. Robinson, the film tells the story of a troubled young girl, Anna, who finds herself drawn to the abandoned Marsh House and a mysterious girl Marnie who appears in the window.

The deal was negotiated by Eric Beckman from GKIDS and Geoffrey Wexler from Studio Ghibli, with GKIDS taking all theatrical, non-theatrical, home video and television rights in North America. An English language version is being produced by Studio Ghibli and Geoffrey Wexler. The film is slated for a spring 2015 theatrical release and awards submissions.

There is one movie left (possibly two) left in the Ghibi run. Its a scary time in animation…

The TAG Union Blog stated this:

To give a bit of history on Shadow: the movie was in development in 2011, when Mark Dindal was developing the feature from an idea by one J. Katzenberg. Mark started work on the picture in 2010.

I saw some of the early art and test animation, and it looked promising. Different. Mark was nice enough to sit down for a TAG blog interview when he was slammed with work on the film (we talked in a DWA conference room and cut the session short when he had to get to a meeting); seven months later he had departed the project due to creative differences. (From accounts these were actual, 24-karat creative differences. Not the fake press release kind designed to cover a firing.)

Alessandro Carloni, a DWA veteran, has been listed as director of Me and My Shoulder for some time. There was a long stretch where not much work was happening on Shadow; reamWorks staffers told me there was a skeleton crew and the word was out and about that the picture would most likely die a quiet death in its crib.

Now Film Divider and others say that’s not the case, and I hope it’s true.

Here is how Film Divider sees it:

In 2012, it was announced that Stanley the man, Stan the shadow and Heidi the woman, would be voiced by Josh Gad, Bill Hader and Kate Hudson respectively. It’s not clear if this will still be the case, though I’d think it’s more likely than not.

At the time, Gad posted updates about the film to his Instagram. Some are now deleted, but his copy of the shooting script is still there, and it features the above image on its cover;

Tom Hiddleston was later linked to the role of an evil shadow, the main antagonist of the film, though we’ve yet to confirm definitively.

Note: There will be two articles coming that will showcase a bit more about what is going on in the VFX world – and give you the whole view on why their are so many problems ahead for VFX and Motion Capture as a whole.

The recent expose concerning the techopolis scandal in animation has built up a firestorm in the VFX and animation world. That being said, the lawsuit that is in play in the courts could change the way Movies and TV are done for the foreseeable future.

Which makes this news item curious:

On Friday, The Walt Disney Company, DreamWorks Animation, Sony Pictures and Blue Sky Studios fired heavy legal artillery at a proposed class action lawsuit that aims to punish the studios for allegedly conspiring to deny workers in the visual effects community better work opportunities. The defendants are demanding a dismissal on new antitrust claims as coming too late and being bereft of necessary factual support.

The motion to dismiss continues by pointing out that much of what was uncovered by the DOJ relates to communications prior to 2009 — which the defendants argue is out-of-bounds for review as well as activity that the DOJ itself declined to prosecute. If the anti-poaching pacts continued after 2010, within the statute-of-limitations, they say “it is plaintiffs’ burden to allege specific anticompetitive conduct,” and not only haven’t they done so, continues the motion, the studios say it’s also implausible.

“It is highly improbable, to say the least, that parties under a DOJ investigation of their allegedly unlawful conduct would continue to engage in any such conduct while under that scrutiny,” states the motion.

The visual effects workers who are suing can perhaps beat the clock if they can show fraudulent concealment, or that the studio purposely hid their anticompetitive conduct. The studios say that nothing like this is alleged in the complaint.

But the motion to dismiss isn’t merely an attempt to have a judge reject the lawsuit on procedural grounds. The studios go above and beyond the typical route towards defeating a lawsuit by attacking class action attorneys at the firm of Cohen Milstein as springing into action upon word that a judge rejected Apple’s $325 million settlement as too low. “As for the named plaintiffs, there is no allegation that any of them ever did anything to investigate his or her claim,” they say.

The studios attempt to pick apart the smoking gun evidence of an antitrust conspiracy offered up by the plaintiffs.

There was a response from twitter from VFX Soldier to Mark Ames:

. Studios claim workers waited to long to file. Most of us didn’t know who was involved until sealed court docs were released…

Response from the TAG Union:

It’s not surprising that Our Fine Entertainment Conglomerates are responding to the lawsuits alleging wage suppression with Uzis blazing. Freezing forward movement on the case or … better yet … shutting the suits down would be a good thing.

So they’re taking a multi-pronged approach: 1) The suits are untimely (“Hey, good try, but the statutes of limitations has kicked in!”). And 2) The wage disputes should have been arbitrated, per the plaintiffs Personal Service Contracts.

Then another answer from Scott Squires:

They’re saying it didn’t happen despite evidence. And secret long enough that it no longer qualifies

This isnt a major surprise. The studios would have no choice but to fight back. This is their money maker – or at least – its engine. Its going to get really interesting in the next few weeks.

I recently discovered that thedaoofdragonball.com’s Derek Padula has released a 7-volume analysis on Akira Toriyama’s beloved Dragon Ball franchise, so I had to check it out for myself. I mean, I’ve been stealing the guy’s content for years now and posting it on Toonbarn as news. I figured the content on the book is going to last me a while.

So first things first, what’s this book called and what’s it all about?

In case you went directly to the body of the message and failed to read the title, the book is titled Dragon Ball Culture, and it’s a 160-page book consisting of Derek’s in-depth analysis of the Dragon Ball manga and anime, as well as the various works that influenced the series. It’s available in eBook (epub, Kindle, PDF) format via the official page or in print form via Amazon.

Dragon Ball Culture is an independent, unofficial work and was created without participation from any individual or company involved in creating or producing the Dragon Ball series, so don’t expect any official input from Toriyama. But Derek does provide information sourced from official channels (the book does a good job of citing sources) so it works as a good reference for canonical or official data on the series. It’s handy in case you want to get into another debate on the Internet and need facts to back your statement.

As for who is it for, Dragon Ball Culture might not be for people who are not familiar with the franchise firsthand. A large part of the book’s appeal hinges on learning new things that you didn’t know about Dragon Ball or seeing a new perspective on certain aspects of the series. Derek provides summaries and all the necessary exposition so nobody’s going to get lost in the text, but majority of the information is useless if you have no emotional attachment to the series. So if you’re a Dragon Ball greenhorn, you might want to hold off on reading Dragon Ball Culture until you experience the series first.

The book is obviously targeted towards Dragon Ball fans, particularly fans who think that they already know everything there is to know about the series. Dragon Ball Culture is also a recommended read for non-fans who dismiss the franchise as just a bunch of spiky-haired dudes shouting real hard while shooting lasers from their arms. If you fall in this category, then I definitely recommend checking out Padula’s book.

To find out where you can get copies of the book, you can go directly to the official page.

Nickelodeon’s latest take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be kicking off 2015 with the return of season three on Sunday, Jan 11, at 11:00 am ET/PT. The first all new episode is titled Eyes of the Chimera, and will feature Casey, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie in a precarious situation: all four were captured by a flying mutant that has a mysterious connection to April O’Neal. Meanwhile, Leo and April find themselves saddled with the responsibility of saving their friends, despite struggling with their disabilities.

You can watch a clip from the upcoming episode below:

Season 3 of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the quartet after a Kraang invasion separated them from their adoptive father, Splinter.
