The last time we saw of a certain moose and squirrel was in 2014’s short film bundled with Mr. Peabody & Sherman on home video. Well, Boris and Natasha had better get ready because Toon Barn has learned that DreamWorks is reviving Rocky and Bullwinkle as a television series. It’ll be animated by DHX Studios Vancouver with writing and early production duties in Los Angeles.

We currently aren’t sure if the series will debut on Netflix or if it’ll head to Universal Kids. Though, if you ask this writer, I’d say Netflix is the likelier of the two. The series tentatively scheduled for sometime in 2018.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle characters debuted in the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends television series that ran on ABC and NBC between 1959 and 1964. The show follows the titular moose and squirrel as they attempt thwart the schemes of Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. The series and its related segments have inspired multiple feature films, mostly recently with DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody & Sherman in 2014. That movie later spawned its own television series produced in partnership with DHX for Netflix.

Canadian animation company Nelvana Enterprises has announced D.N.Ace, an all-new comedy-adventure that’ll mix science and fun. The series will be Executive Produced by Matthew Wexler, whose previous credits include Spin Master properties like Bakugan, Paw Patrol and Tenkai Knights.

The series follows curious, adventure-loving, mischief-making, proudly nerdy, 12-year-old Ace Ripley who suddenly learns he holds an incredible ability to manipulate DNA by fusing the genes of a living thing with any other thing, to create something entirely new. The hero-in-the-making uses his newfound power to create ridiculous, amazing, and even terrifying mash-ed up creatures, and tries to save his town from total chaos while trying to have the time of his life.

“We can’t wait to introduce this stand-out series with its distinctive mix of sci-fi, fact, laughter, and thrills to our viewers,” said Scott Dyer, President, Nelvana Enterprises. “Kids love to create and dream up the unimaginable, and the inventive possibilities of D.N.Ace and its mashup mayhem will resonate well with our audience.”

D.N.Ace will run on Teletoon in Canada and is aimed at children 6-9. The company has set forth on 80 11-minute episodes (aired as 40 22-minutes). The Japanese animation house behind Pokemon and Beyblade Burst, OLM, will represent the series alongside Dentsu in Japan. Both will also consult on the series.

Canadian toy and media company Spin Master has a surprising new project on the way. The company behind Paw Patrol, Rusty Rivets, Bakugan and Tenkai Knights is working with The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkland to adapt his child-friendly comic book Super Dinosaur into an animated series. Described as an action adventure comedy aimed at boys 6-11, the show will launch sometime next year on a Canadian channel owned by Corus Entertainment. The story? A group of mutated dinosaurs commanded by the vile Max Maximus routinely attempt to destroy the world. It’s up to the walking talking armored pair of a boy named Derek and his T-Rex to stop them.

Spin Master plans on launching a range of toys alongside the show’s broadcast. Additionally merchandise will become available one the series gains larger distribution internationally.

Super Dinosaur’s CG animation will be produced by Vancouver’s Atomic Cartoons. The original comic book series was first launched in 2011 and was published by Image Comics.

Remember Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal? The third spin-off of Kazuki Takashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series ran for 156 episodes between April 2011 and March 2014 on TV Tokyo in Japan. An English dub produced in New York by 4Kids Entertainment (and later, 4K Media) ran in the United States on The CW and Nicktoons between October 2011 and February 2015. Did you know there was an entirely separate English dub of the series?

The first 26 episodes of the series were reversioned in Los Angeles by Bang Zoom Entertainment. This dub starred Johnny Yong Bosch as Yuma, Vic Mignogna as Shark, Richard Cansino as Bronk, with Cassandra Morris, Sam Riegel, and Liam O’Brien also on deck. It featured an entirely new musical score, the addition of comedic sound effects as well as altered animation. The latter came as a result of the production team having been given largely unprecedented access to the animation files so they could tweak things as they saw fit.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of this dub’s puzzle is that it legally shouldn’t have ever been made. The dub was produced for Asatsu-DK, the Japanese ad-agency that owns Yu-Gi-Oh! animation studio Nihon Ad Systems. Together with broadcaster TV Tokyo, the two attempted to revoke 4Kids’ license to the property in 2011 over alleged unpaid royalties amounting to $4.8 million. In direct response to that, 4Kids filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, a move that would force a pause on the ongoing lawsuit.

This was when Asatsu-DK decided to go on the offensive. Viewing 4Kids’ license to the property null and void, the company paid Bang Zoom to produce their dub of Zexal over a period of 6-8 months in June 2011. They even started to promote the series at television trade events to get prospective broadcast and merchandise partners interested. The U.S. courts would find this information out and accosted Asatsu-DK and TV Tokyo for trying to circumvent the proceedings. They were forced to act as though 4Kids’ license was still valid while the legal cases were determined.

The finishing blow for this dub came on December 29, 2011. The U.S. courts ruled that 4Kids’ license to the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise was in fact still valid. A significant number of the alleged unpaid fees were either found by the court to be without merit, or were already withdrawn by the Japanese companies. Additionally, the court noted that Asatsu-DK and TV Tokyo failed to enact the proper license termination protocol dictated in their contract with 4Kids Entertainment. All told, the actions of the Japanese companies cast serious doubts over the legitimacy of the lawsuit. Truthfully, it may have been too late for Bang Zoom’s dub anyway. The 4Kids dub had already premiered on U.S. television more than two months prior.

In May 2012, 4Kids and the two Japanese parties eventually settled their differences with 4Kids receiving a cool $8 million from them. It was as though the New York-based company activated their trap card. Maybe a super charged Magic Cylinder? As a result of the bankruptcy proceedings, 4Kids later sold off their production arm, 4Kids Productions, and the Yu-Gi-Oh! license to a newly formed branch of Japanese gaming company Konami, 4K Media. Konami was already involved with the franchise through manufacturing the video game and trading card game tie-ins. 4K Media has handled the English language adaptions of every Yu-Gi-Oh! production since.

Asatsu-DK’s dub hasn’t been entirely lost to the Shadow Realm, though. Footage from it did sneak out to the public. Kristi Reed, who was the voice director at Bang Zoom working on the show presented a panel at Armageddon Expo in Australia in 2012. Fans on a Yu-Gi-Oh! forum called Neo Ark Cradle managed to dig up the opening theme song and its demo, the former of which was sung by Bosch.

So, without further ado, this is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal dub you weren’t supposed to see:

Director Guillero del Toro has revealed that his and DreamWorks’ Netflix animated series Trollhunters is part of a much bigger universe. Centered around a small Californian town where the weird happens, Tales of Arcadia will consist of three separate shows. The franchise takes inspiration from del Toro’s childhood, which he describes as strange.

The second of the trilogy, DreamWorks 3 Below, will debut next year. It’ll focus on two teenage alien royals and their bodyguard who crash land on Earth and have to find a way to fit in while rebuilding their spaceship. The third entry, DreamWorks Wizards, has far less known about it. All the three will share is that it’ll be the culmination of all three stories in an epic battle. Like most expanded universes, characters will appear in each series.

Additionally, Netflix has announced when viewers will get a chance at watching the second season. Trollhunters season 2 debuts on the streaming giant on December 15th. Here’s a trailer:

For centuries, a grand clash between good and evil has been waging between the trolls beneath our feet. Join Jim and friends as they battle the evil Trolls of the Darklands in Trollhunters Part 2 by master storyteller Guillermo del Toro.

Netflix and DreamWorks previously announced the guest stars, which include Mark Hamill. You can queue up the second season here.

The first season of Trollhunters became Netflix’s most-watched original children’s series.

Back in 2014, fans of a sneaky raccoon thief, Sly Cooper, were treated with news that the beloved PlayStation video game franchise would be heading to the big screen. Blockade Entertainment, Rainmaker Entertainment, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Film Financial Services and Jungsu Broadcasting Corporation were set to collaborate on a feature film due out in 2016. Well, 2017 is almost over and there’s not been much movement on it since. In fact, the movie’s official website now leads to an error page.

What happened? Three words: Ratchet & Clank. The same five partners behind Sly Cooper were also behind another theatrical adaptation of a PlayStation property. Unfortunately for those involved, things didn’t go to plan. Ratchet & Clank launched in theaters in April 2016. The film wasn’t well received critically, and commercially, it didn’t do any better. Produced on a budget around $20 million, Ratchet grossed a slim $13 million at the global box office – that’s a number before the theaters take their cut of the ticket sales.

Ratchet & Clank’s financial failure hit Rainmaker, the Canadian animation studio behind the film, hard. The company took a large loss on their $10 million investment in the feature. Shortly after, Rainmaker pulled the Sly Cooper feature from its production slate and moved it back into development. At this point the company had spent $300,520 on the project. Rainmaker’s president and chief creative officer, Michael Hefferon, told Playback in September 2016 that they’d “rethink timing, how we release and even budget numbers that we consider releasing films at.”

Late in 2016, Rainmaker merged with Frederator Networks and Ezrin Hirsh Entertainment to form Wow Unlimited Media. Kevin Munroe, who was attached to direct Sly and previously held that role on Ratchet, moved onto other projects.

Toonbarn has come to learn that earlier this year Rainmaker relinquished their rights to the property in exchange for $132,990 from the film’s other partners. The animation studio will receive an additional $200,000 if the film receives the green light from someone else.

It’s not all bad news for Sly fans, though. Earlier this year, PGS, Technicolor, Blockade and Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed a Sly Cooper animated series was in development. Brad Foxhoven, founder and CEO of Blockade Entertainment, has stated that the company would like to see Sly hit the small screen first before another attempt at a theatrical film is made.

A couple of months back we showcased Little Astro Boy, a new take on the classic Osamu Tezuka robot superhero from the French studios Planet Nemo Animation and Something Big. Produced in collaboration with Tezuka Production and aimed at upper preschoolers, the new 11-minute 52 episode series will debut sometime in 2019. Here’s a teaser of what you can expect:

The eco-systems of planet Earth are endangered. Lucky for us, a super-powered robot boy is flying to rescue! astro in on a mission to help anyone anywhere in the world with a problem involving natural phenomena. Go little Astro Boy ! GO !

Production began in April before moving full steam ahead in June. Animation work is scheduled to go beyond February of next year. Virgile Trouillot handled the character designs and serves as the creative director. Little Astro Boy will be available in English, French and Japanese. The Weinstein Company has signed on to distribute the series internationally.

The latest iteration in the franchise that has generated over $2.6 billion in retail sales draws some inspiration from the earlier 2014 Little Astro Boy anime. Tezuka super fans may also notice the first animated appearance of Atom Cat (known as Astro Kitty in the English version). The project is independent of Caribara Production, Monaco’s Shibuya Productions, and Tezuka Production’s Astro Boy Reboot series.

According to recent reports from Deadline.com and the Wall Street Journal, The Walt Disney Co. have resumed talks to acquire some of the assets of Fox, amid reports of other big players entering the arena in a bid to acquire Fox’s properties. Some of the interested parties include NBCUniversal owner Comcast, and Sony.

The deal with Disney is said to cover Fox’s movie and TV studios, as well as its international holdings in ventures including a stake in the UK satellite company Sky. Fox News, Fox Broadcasting Co., and Fox Sports Networks are not part of the deal but even with their exclusion, the acquisition is big news because if it comes to fruition, the Walt Disney Co. will be one step closer to finally acquiring all of Marvel’s film properties under one roof.

It is reported that Murdoch and family, which hold 39% of the 21st Century Fox voting shares, will decide by the end of the year whether there will be any sale moving forward, and to whom.

It was only last week that the new My Hero Academia game, dubbed One’s Justice, has been announced for the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch, but as it turns out – the game is already far along enough that Bandai Namco was able to share a bunch of new screenshots, coinciding with the official website going live.

If the screenshots have not made it clear yet, One’s Justice is an action game that will have players batting it out using their Quirks across gorgeous cel-shaded environments that mimic the look of the anime it was based on. It is also said that the stages will have destructible environments that offer their own in-game advantages.

No concrete details have been provided regarding the roster, but protagonist Izuku Midoriya and villain Tomura Shigaraki feature prominently in the screenshots, which should prove that at least one of them is playable.

Soon-ish, at least, as the plans put the schedule somewhere between 2018 and 2019.

The news is pretty darn official, as it came from Spin Master’s own Global President and COO Ben Gadbois, who listed Bakugan as one of the “several exciting TV shows” in the company’s entertainment group. Mr Gadbois also expressed plans to expand on their other properties Paw Patrol, Abby Hatchers, Rusty Rivets, and Hatchimals.

A couple of new trailers has just been released for the upcoming animated theatrical film titled Batman Ninja, which is exactly what the title implies – a story about Batman turning into a ninja (barring the obvious criticism that he, technically, is a trained ninja.) And no, this is not a fanfilm. It’s an honest to goodness official project from Warner Bros./DC, with animation handled by Kamikaze Douga (and it frankly looks and flows better than most recent DC animated movies!)

The plot for Batman Ninja is par for the course for what the Batman comic books do when they need to place the world’s greatest detective in places and times that are not exactly in line with the publisher’s strictly-policed continuity – it involves THE Batman and his allies being transported back in time to the Warring States Period in feudal Japan, in order to stop the Joker from rewriting history after usurping the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga.

You can watch the trailers below:

Despite the massive hype surrounding the release of Bandai Namco and Arc System Works’ gorgeous 2.5D Dragonball fighting game, Dragonball FighterZ, the PC port isn’t exactly all sweetness and light as many players are worrying about the ridiculously high minimum system requirements (especially for a game of its kind). At the moment, the Steam store page lists an i7-3770 CPU, a GTX 660 4GB GPU, and 16 GB of RAM as the minimum requirements. It’s not unattainable, and we suspect many gamers already have rigs capable of exceeding those, but it is still too high for a minimum and players are worried that it’s an indication of a lazy unoptimized port.

If you are part of the people who were worried, Bandai Namco has stepped in and officially confirmed that the minimum requirements on the Steam store page are not final, and will be updated later on.

We suspect that the listed minimum specs are merely based on the PCs used by the developers to develop and test the game, and they have not yet done further testing in order to see how the build will perform on weaker PCs. It is a very common occurrence with Japanese-developed games on Steam, with other examples being the Koei-Tecmo-developed Dead or Alive 5: Last Round and One Piece Pirate Warriors 3, both of which initially had ridiculously high system requirements, but turned out to be optimized enough to run on potato PCs upon release.

Of course, Bandai Namco has only said that the minimum system requirements are not final. They never said that it’s going to be lower. For all we know, the true system requirements are much higher – but let’s not jinx it. We want Dragonball FighterZ to run on as many PCs as possible. We want it to run on your grandmother’s desktop, on your aunt’s laptop, on your sister’s pink AIO PC, and heck – we want Dragonball FighterZ playing on the little LED screen attached to the local gym’s treadmill. So get to it Arc Sys, optimize the shiz out of our game, and our wallets will be open and willing on January 26, 2018!

According to a recent announcement, Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital studio Blue Ribbon Content is currently hard at work on a new spin off based on the Scooby-Doo franchise, titled Daphne and Velma. What makes this spin-off project noteworthy is that it’s a live-action series starring Sarah Jeffery (Shades of Blue) and Sarah Gilman (Last Man Standing) as the titular female sleuths.

Of course, this is not the first live action appearance of Daphne and Velma, as there have been several live action takes on the Mystery Inc crew (official projects, and unofficial takes such as the one featured in the cult comedy film Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back.) The official synopsis reveals that this is a prequel of sorts to the Scooby Doo franchise, following the adventures of the duo before they teamed up with Scooby and the rest of the gang:

Before their eventual team-up with Scooby and the gang, bright & optimistic Daphne and whip-smart & analytical Velma are both mystery-solving teens who are best friends but have only met online — until now. Daphne has just transferred to Velma’s school, Ridge Valley High, an incredible tech-savvy institute with all the latest gadgets provided by the school’s benefactor, tech billionaire Tobias Bloom. And while competition is fierce among the students for a coveted internship at Bloom Innovative, Daphne and Velma dig beyond all the gadgets and tech to investigate what is causing some of the brightest students in school to disappear — only to emerge again in a zombie-fied state.

The project is being produced with Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Tisdale’s Blondie Girl Productions, and will be release by Warner Bros. Home Ent. in 2018. Lifeboat Prod. provides production services.

“Blondie Girl is committed to telling stories from a female perspective and we could not be more thrilled to give Daphne and Velma their own story,” said Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Tisdale, producers and founders of Blondie Girl Productions. “It’s so exciting to partner with Warner Home Entertainment and Blue Ribbon Content to introduce a new generation to the smart, charismatic, fearless females that we all know and love.”
