Fans of the LEGO Movie will have something to look forward to this summer, as Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures have teamed up in order to bring the hit CG animated/live-action hybrid film to Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital on June 17.

For the uninitiated, The LEGO Movie focuses on an ordinary minifigure that is mistaken for the prophesied MasterBuilder and caught in a massive conflict between various rebels, heroes, and an uptight CEO who wants to glue the entire world together.

The Blu-Ray Combo Pack is priced at $35.99 and includes the film on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD with Ultraviolet. There’s also a special “Everything is Awesome Edition,” which retails for $59.98 and will include everything from the regular combo pack along with an exclusive Vituvius minifig, a bonus 3D movie, a collectible 3D Emmet photo, and exclusive bonus content (TBA.)

THR has recently reported that sibling writing duo Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux have been tapped by DreamWorks Animation in order to write a new film treatment for the classic Harvey Comics character Hot Stuff.

DreamWorks was able to acquire the rights to the Hot Stuff property when it bought Classic Media last 2011. CM held the rights to all the Harvey properties, which includes iconic characters such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wendy the Good Little Witch, Richie Rich, and others. Hot Stuff is known as toddler-sized demon whose innate desire to help others gets him into frequent trouble with his kind.

Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux, on the other hand, are best known for their work in Fox’s popular primetime toon Bob’s Burgers. The duo also has a project with Paramount regarding the film adaptation of “The Day I Turned Uncool.”

The late 80s was a good time for the House of Mouse. For starters, Who Framed Roger Rabbit broke box office records in ’88, gained critical reception, and spurred new interest in animation. A year after that, Disney went back to its roots by releasing their first modern animated fairy tale musical, The Little Mermaid. Here are some things you probably don’t know behind this Disney classic:

The Bubbles Were Outsourced to China

bubbles

The Little Mermaid required a lot of effects animation because a large part of the film is set underwater, and the studio didn’t want to skimp on the underwater effects. However, they were still recovering from years of neglect and underperforming projects so they weren’t capable of handling the massive amount of work that the film required. As a solution, Disney outsourced the animation of the bubbles to Chinese animation studio Pacific Rim Productions, which allowed Disney’s effects animators to work on more complicated effects.

It Was the Last Cel Animated Full Length Feature from Disney

the little mermaid ending

Disney used cel animation even before Snow White, the process requiring an animator’s drawings to be copied onto clear sheets of plastic and then painted on the opposite site, before being laid over hand painted backgrounds. The Little Mermaid was the last full length Disney project that used the animation process, which was replaced by Pixar’s CAPS (Computer Animation Production System), a system that allowed a drawing to be scanned, colored, and composited digitally. Interestingly enough, The Little Mermaid is also one of the first full-length Disney films to use CAPS, as the final shot of the movie used the system.

Ursula is Not an Octopus

ursula

Most people assume that Ursula is an octopus (because the average octopus is more scary than your average squid, both in name and look.) However, it’s common knowledge that an octopus has 8 tentacles. Count Ursula’s tentacles – she only has six. It is said that Ursula was supposed to have eight tentacles but a decision was made to remove two in order to make her easier to animate.

The Film Almost Didn’t Happen (and Why You Should Be Thankful That it Did)

Splash poster

Director Ron Clements originally proposed the idea of an animated adaptation of The Little Mermaid to then-CEO Jefferey Katzenberg during a pitch meeting, but Katzenberg didn’t warm up to the pitch. Additionally, Disney at the time was planning a sequel to the 1984 live action comedy ‘Splash,’ and Katzenberg believed that two mermaid movies would be overkill. Katzenberg reversed his decision the very next day and approved the Little Mermaid. The Splash sequel never materialized.

The Film Almost Happened in a Less Impressive Form

hans-christian-andersen-pic-getty-3485717

Lastly, even before the whole Splash debacle, The Little Mermaid was already considered by Disney – except not as a full length feature. The film was originally going to be part of a proposed biopic about storyteller Hans Christian Andersen consisting of live-action scenes depicting the storyteller’s personal life and animated segments for his fairy tales. The biopic failed to materialize and along with it, the Little Mermaid segment.

When the first footages of the upcoming TMNT movie reboot went live, all eyes were on the turtles; or to be more accurate, on the turtles’ lips and nostrils. Very little attention was given to Megan Fox’s April O’Neil or the decidedly non-Asian Shredder, probably because people only have enough outrage to go around, and it’s been spent on the creepy looking Turtles.

However, now that everybody has probably replenished their stock of outrage, a new TV spot has been released for the movie. This time around, it’s titled “Brothers” and features a look at the turtles’ sensei, Master Splinter. You can watch the TV spot below and see if it deserves your well-stocked outrage (remember that Transformers 4 and Batman vs. Superman are still on the horizon so don’t go using all of your outrage for one movie):

Avid trainers/players already know Psyduck’s type, but casual or new fans of the franchise tend to assume that it’s a Psychic type Pokemon because it is more closely associated with psychic attacks. The truth is that Psyduck is a water-type Pokemon.

Anti-Cheating Measures

FireRed and LeafGreen has an anti-cheat measure coded in, wherein hacking in Mew and Deoxys will result in a Mew that will not listen to the trainer regardless of the badges you own. It is not possible to catch Mew normally.

There are Pokemon That Abduct Humans

If you take the time to read the descriptions for the Pokemon you own, you’ll see that some types – mostly from the ghost and psychic category – have a habit of abducting children and in some cases grown ups as well. This would be disturbing, except for the fact that trainers technically abduct Pokemon as well. So between a Gothita and a kid with a spare pokeball, it just turns into a case of who gets to abduct who first.

Real World Reference

Even though the regions are based on real places, it’s obvious that the world in Pokemon is set in a different reality. However, there are references to the real world, such as Parasect’s Pokedex entry, which says that its spores are used as a medicine in China.

Tooting the BugHorn

Even though Megahorn is a Bug-type move, there is only one bug-type Pokemon that can learn the move: Heracross.

Worst Defense Ever

In the anime, Magcargo is depicted as having the ability to retract into its shell as a means of protection. However, its Pokedex entries state that the shell can break easily.

It’s Complicated

Even though Mew is genderless, it can still learn the moves Attract and Captivate. However, the fact that it is also genderless means that it will fail on every opponent that is not genderless.

Time for an Intervention

In Pokemon Yellow, you can make your Pikachu very happy by offering him potions again and again – even if he doesn’t need them.

Lt. Surge Hacked is a Damn Cheater

In Pokemon Stadium 2, Lt. Surge had a Raichu that knows both Surf and Reversal. This is impossible to achieve through normal means, because Reversal is a GSC egg move while Surf is a Yellow-only move.

This Pokemon Has a Good PR Team

According to his Pokedex entry, Machamp can throw 1 thousand punches in two seconds. However, Machamp itself is in the bottom 50% on speed numbers.

This Pokemon Has a Good PR Team as Well

Arcanine’s species name is “Legendary Pokemon” even though Arcanines are not legendary in any way.

The Pokemon Prototype Was Developed for the Famicom

Of course, the Famicom was already reaching the end of its lifecycle at the time. Thankfully, it was easily ported over to the Gameboy due to the similarities in their hardware and capabilities. Moving the project over to the Gameboy instead of the Super Famicom is a smart move even if you disregard the difference in hardware. The Gameboy is still going strong at the time, had excellent market penetration, and very little competition. Additionally, the Gameboy’s successor was backwards compatible with Gameboy carts, a fact that extended the games’ lifespan even further than intended.
