Titmouse Studio (Metalocalypse), Korea’s Studio Goindol, and Peter Chung (The Animatrix, Aeon Flux) have recently collaborated on an animated short that provides a little bit of backstory behind Blizzard’s latest installment of the Diablo action RPG franchise.
The video shows an army of angels led by Imperius and his cadre of archangels (which includes familiar characters Tyrael and Auriel) laying siege to Diablo’s castle, only to come to a disagreement over what they are supposed to do with the bound prime evil.
Tyreal and Auriel proposes that Diablo be bound and imprisoned for all eternity (preventing him from coming back), only for Imperious to go ahead and slay the demon, resulting in Diablo being bisected and its blood being spilled on the archangels and the ground itself. The story is narrated by Deckard Cain and perfectly sets the tone for the upcoming game, which will go on sale on May 15th, 2012.
