Astute viewers of Nintendo Direct’s video presentation at E3 this afternoon may have been witness to footage of an upcoming New Super Mario Bros. game for the upcoming Nintendo console Wii U.
Take the following screenshot for example:
President Iwata talked about the new social networking features of the “Miiverse”, which allows players to connect with friends via the net and pass along messages even in the middle of a game. The feature was demonstrated through a Mario side-scroller that looks a lot like the New Super Mario Bros. Mii tech demo that was unveiled at last year’s E3. The difference is that the Miis aren’t jumping and running alongside Mario. Mario was alone in the screen and the Mii’s are just popping up on screen to pass messages of encouragement when a rogue Koopa hit and killed the character.
The teaser also showed the map screen displayed on the Wii U’s gamepad. More messages are being passed along by the Miis in the map, and if you look at the messages themselves, you can also get hints as to what the new New Super Mario Bros game will have as features.
