Today’s free flash game is a sidescrolling shooter called Red Riot. It’s purely 2D but the use of high resolution assets give it a 2.5D look, and coupled with smooth animation make it a really gorgeous looking game that belies its simple browser based roots.
The game puts you in control of what appears to be a superhero – based on the star emblem – who is armed with a jetpack and handblasters. You fight against tanks, spaceships, and other mechanical foes by shooting them with the handblasters rapidly, or by unleashing a huge AOE attack.
Red Riot uses FPS controls, namely, the WSAD keys for movement, and the mouse for aiming and shooting. The space is used to drop a bomb (the aforementioned AOE attack). It sounds simple enough but the sidescrolling gameplay will confuse you at first, since you will forget that your character is always aiming at the direction of your mouse cursor (resulting in times where you fly up to meet an enemy, only to realize that you are still shooting at the ground after forgetting to reposition your cursor).
