Cartoon Network has recently announced that they have greenlit the sixth season of the hit animated comedy series, The Amazing World of Gumball. The multi award-winning series is currently on its fourth season, with a fifth season scheduled to air from September 2016 in foreign markets followed by a 2017 rollout in North America.

For the uninitiated, The Amazing World of Gumball is a unique hybrid 2D/3D animated series that follows the hilarious and unorthodox adventures of the titular blue cat, as well as his idiosyncratic family, the Wattersons. The series is the brainchild of Ben Bocquelet and executive produced by Sarah Fell. The series is directed by Mic Graves.

As of Q1 2016, the series has already netted 165 million viewers all over the world, while also building a strong presence across multiple digital platforms. The latest mobile game Agent Gumball has already reached #1 in the iTunes charts in five countries and #1 in the Kids category in over 27 countries, while the EMEA-developed app Raibow Ruckus also ranked favorably in the iTunes paid apps chart in over 27 countries across the globe.

Or: How Thundercats (2011) was the end of the North American animation/Kids Business (in a way)

Note: The Opinions shown on this essay does not reflect the views of Toon Barn and its affiliates.

Its Saturday – winter is only a few days away and after that – Christmas on Friday and then – Saturday rolls around again, the next Friday is 2016 and then the first day of the new year – Saturday rolls around again.

But the room is empty.

Children are sleep – or trying to go into lessons of music, art or sport in a what has become a rarity in this late 2015 – frost. Not much snow, not much of a winter. And some on twitter worry that its a bad omen…even those that dont believe in a creator.

Its strange to hear that – those who are my friends on twitter usually are headstrong, racing against those with differing opinions – sometimes in a passive aggressive way, other times for legit reasons, still others to talk in jest, tact etc.

But some say the spirit of Christmas overrides these worries.

They may have been right in a past time – before things changed – some for the better – and some for the worse.

But all changes effect us in many ways.

This year – the Christmas spirit seems to be tempered by the Star Wars machine. And as the new engine of the creation of a “Corporate Safe Space” start in earnest, three films before 2020, many TV series – other animated spots – video games, toys and other trinkets; its more of a cynical promotion of the greatest and most secretive fan fiction ever created.

In any other time – it would have been just one of the many major blockbusters – didn’t effect next weeks numbers or so on. We would have other things to pass the time. But the concept of the “Corporate Safe Space” is much more insidious – it promotes the other products from other companies it competes with as the literal manifestation of evil, and their own product – as the good work – the holy work – the one you turn to when all is lost.

Made simple and plain by this post on twitter:

to people who complain about some movies being too long: do you realize your own garbage life goes on like forever

make good movies last as long as possible. 3 hours, 100 years, forever. put us out of our misery

And Misery loves Company. Its the end as entertainment as a way to relax, and at times to wonder about our human condition, or even to have fun. It now has become a cradle to grave mantra of endless content creation for the content men who via their advertising agencies promote a existence that doesn’t exist in reality.

I could tell other stories. How, why and for what reason things arnt the way it seems anymore. But more often than not – its because people, companies, multi-nationals, educators and even those who were meant to represent us dont. They turn out to be more of a maguffin. A sad fate of madding ideals mixed with the most banal pragmatism.

I just want to focus on us. The fans of animation.

Its hard to deal with but – just because a show has some merit doesn’t mean its good.

We have seen with My Little Pony (and Equestria Girls), Steven Universe – and even the weaker shows such as Regular Show and Gumball – the sense is that they talking above the adults and the children are just asking questions about things that are in the show and they just become so lost. Their fanbases are taken over not just by adults who just love the show by its own merits, but by those who feel the show creates a space where everything else feels lost to them. They didnt develop strength and character even when the show was dark – now as the animated series promote a light hearted fare – it becomes a way to promote all sorts of dank memes and even more politically charged language, and using the concept of sexuality as a way to  ease a man or a womens shadow natures into quiet repose. In the west and most western animation Its a sad, banal attempt to extend ones love of a work of fiction or genre. The east handles this better – and sees it as it is – integration, fashion, technique and embracing the work as is and nothing more or less.

We talk about what happened to Zamii, and the media has done so in many ways. But what people dont realized is that when the creators backed down from comments made by those who wished Zamii dead, it proved to me that nobody knows when to stand their ground and say – enough. It started from the day the Thundercats got canned, to the day that they made the move for Korra, to the issues with Steven Universe and the issues with their fanbase. The Internet given voice, the voice given form and now it has power even over the creators of these shows.

Its because the executives and the fans are from the same economic structure. The creators not only have to cowtow to said executives when it comes to content – which always been a problem for years, now have to deal with the views that has the money. The advertising agencies may aim for most viewers, but we seen now, even despite advertising laws made in order to make sure that children dont become mindless consumers, it just made things worse for all involved.

It has been mentioned before about education and the E/I. I also mentioned about the scandal concerning the lowering of wages and collusion in the theatrical animation sector. Did you know that Ed Catmull  bought a 12 million dollar house? This is after the trial finds out that the Disney board knew about these issues.

Welcome to Poof Poof, Glitter Boots, the force is with us. Netflix is about to spend five Billion dollars on “content creation” while Netflix is overvalued in the stock market by a value of 400X its price. Its the time of complaints of how a animated character looks via the eyes of a fan. Its the time when ratings “dont matter”, its audience share, that # social network outreach, insta connections and all the rest. In a world when ignorance is awarded, all those who run entertainment – and in animation, “create”and manufacture the look and feeling of a inglorious look. Not for satire, not even to make fun of the world – but to create safe spaces that don’t challenge the characters, nor the setting – and most important the viewers.

Increasingly, the Holiday classics take more importance. Years ago, they were apart of a extended program of network kids shows and which many popular shows joined in specials during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Today these holiday specials stand as the guard of a time long  past. For the shows now air on Cartoon Network/ Nick and Disney XD  are now run by feckless creators, some who feel that kowtowing to powers and those that perceive they have power, only hurts the show in the end of the day. They are not creators, they are PR men, propaganda for either a education mandate that doesn’t work, a form of social uplifting of the misfits of the world that doesn’t uplift anything but Pateron accounts and Kickstarter Funds, and content that all dines in the mesh and morrass of pesudo-scarlet letter trigger warnings, slights of political gotcha checks, and all and all out purriance. Its the wonderful world of dung emoji and it been that way since that’s all what the “Corporate Safe Space” will give us.

And in one of the sad ironies of the time, Toys has lost wonder – even Lego uses Japanese culture tropes to sell product. You usually have team ups with diffrent shows in many of a Japanese product – but it doesnt happen in the states…unless you Lego and have more clout than most other franchiser in the kids business.

It even reaches Toonami in a sense. After the announcement that they were bringing back Samurai Jack, Mr Demarco stated he wanted one of the newer Lupin series, Yukyo Mine. Not the best of the Lupin works. But even he was told by the censors he couldn’t. Its strange. Lupin hasnt been apart of American culture – so it becomes to most hardest of sells to even put it on Toonami. Of course he would get Wakfu, but then they are on Netflix.

The fact that a dude who makes Adult Swim money over fist – gets denied a show – while the Creators of the Steven Universe are allowed to get away with everything – and the creators bows down to pressure from people who wish other fans of their show dead, is sad to me. Mine(And Lupin for that matter) isn’t going to cause your network problems, the show you promote next  to the 5th iteration of legendary Looney Toons characters has become more problematic and the fact they don’t see this tells me all i need to know.

They have given up on us. The American people – the American audience. who they feel are too lost in their “common sense” to talk to. We got so many was to view the content – they think its OK to delay shows for months on end. They will watch it again and again, old episodes – six, seven times a week. It will be greater than everything we have done before.

Then the holiday classics come on. The humanity. Coming from puppets, from animation, from the voice overs, the backgrounds. They stood, even when things were being built for children around, and torn down by government edict. Yes, animation is for all.

But at times, the little ones are to be reminded there are things beyond numbers, letters, and such things we as people need to be in the world. They need the journey of the heroes, the power of belief and the joy of overcoming life’s grand trials. And these folks who would easily falter to the hands of those willing to kill don’t understand and never did truly loved the work. They loved the fame, and sold their souls to the oligarchic power structures they trying to fight against and say they are against, but in reality work for them and are in tandem with them.

They are nothing more than the Grinch.

He could be redeemed, but I doubt they can.

Can anybody be redeemed?

Not so.

Thats why these specials, are truly are. They show us were we have fallen – the simple reasons why – and putting complications on it – and excusing it only causes us to lose the plot.

“Baby stuff”, Charlotte said to Virgina there is no Santa.

“Baby stuff”, when those demons said to Zamii when they said to her kill herself – “You know how she looks LIKE!”

But its that spirit of Christmas, that these specials represent show the best of ourselves, the hope in a manger. The hope in a child born in poverty gets the only thing that can get him out of it, a football. The hope in a woman who is homeless – to get 100 bucks from a man, not for favor, but out of his heart and his own reasons. The hope of a man, who after being told after he comes back from war, that the people he fought for calls him names, cishet, warmongerer, etc. That he – suffering from a lost hand, and lost heart and mind, can find a home, an honest job, and finally a smile from a grateful nation.

But for 345 days of the year, America is “We The Spiteful”. It feels more like pity.

We don’t know what we had until its gone.

And these holiday specials remind us every year of what we truly lost, the sense that good will truly win, and hope never truly dies.

They used to be apart of a place children could go.

Now these shows, these specials that only come one time a year, are now the gold standard of the industry.

Its not a popular opinion.

But in the end, the facts remain.

Maybe we adults can never be redeemed.

But Tomorrow isnt not the far away…

And the young must find that tomorrow.

Even if time runs short.

This Saturday and for the foreseeable future of every Saturday, the rooms of the American living room is quiet like the grave…

But its never silent.

Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus…

If only they just believe…

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

At its annual network upfront, Cartoon Network unveiled a conservative 2015′-16 slate, taking an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. While the line-up is sparse on original series, it will please fans of its current schedule. The series Adventure Time, Clarence, Regular Show, Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans Go! and Uncle Grandpa will all continue with new episodes.

The network annnounced two new series for network broadcast: Daniel Chong’s We Bare Bears, which was previously announced at last year’s network upfront, and a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls helmed by Adventure Time art director Nick Jennings (and with no announced involvement from creator Craig McCracken). A new digital series, Mighty Magiswords by Kyle Carrozza, is also planned.

New Original Programming:

We Bare Bears: We Bare Bears is a comedy about three bear siblings, named Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear. Each episode follows their awkward attempts at assimilating into human society, whether they’re looking for food, trying to make human friends, or scheming to become internet famous. Created by Annie Award-winner Daniel Chong (Toy Story of Terror!), We Bare Bears is produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

The Powerpuff Girls: Slated for a 2016 launch, ThePowerpuff Girls reboot will include an all-new television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full licensing program slated to roll out across all regions. One of the network’s most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls, which debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. Emmy and BAFTA award winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) is on board as executive producer.

Mighty Magiswords: From Kyle Carrozza comes Cartoon Network Studios first original digital series about a brother and sister team of “Warriors for Hire,” who go on hilarious adventures and crazy quests to collect magical swords.

New Original Crossovers, Movies and Specials:

Long Live the Royals Mini-Series: Join the royal family as they celebrate the yearly Yule Hare Festival. Parties and feasts will be a plenty as they struggle to balance ruling a kingdom and life as a typical family. A new mini-series from Emmy winner Sean Szeles (Regular Show).

Steven Universe/ Uncle Grandpa Crossover Special “Say Uncle: Two of your favorite Cartoon Network series, Steven Universeand Uncle Grandpa, are joining forces for a special crossover episode! Watch as a long lost relative of Steven’s comes to town to aid him in unlocking the power of his mother’s gem!

Regular Show: The Movie: From the creators of the hit Cartoon Network series Regular Show, comes a time travelling long-form special. After accidentally creating a “Timenado,” slacker groundskeepers Mordecai and Rigby go back in time and battle an evil volleyball coach in order to save the universe… and their friendship.

Adventure Time Special Mini-Series: In this multi-part series, Finn and Jake face a new threat to Ooo when Princess Bubblegum’s experiment unleashes ghosts from Marceline’s past.

New Acquired Programming:

Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race: In this action-filled, outrageous buddy comedy, 18 pairs of contestants are put to the mental, physical and emotional test in a frantic race around the world. They’ll push themselves and their partners to the limit, but only one team will arrive at the mat first and become the winners of one million dollars!

Transformers: Robots in Disguise: Summoned by Optimus Prime to save Earth from a new Decepticon threat, Bumblebee puts his light-hearted mettle to the test after assembling a rouge team of young Autobot action heroes.

Supernoobs: From creator Scott Fellows (Johnny Test) and DHX Media, Supernoobs chronicles the misadventures of four nerdy friends, who are mistakenly tasked with saving the world from an evil space virus.

From Cartoon Brew and AWN Via Cartoon Network Press Release

(Some very interesting choices here. Many series from last years upfront have yet to air. Not surprising that Powerpuffs return after a near 10 or so year hiatus after the nasty conflagration between certain conservative groups and others over the IDW cover.)

The Amazing World of Gumball really is amazing– for more than just the fact that’s a hilarious cartoon both children and adults can enjoy.

I could sound off on how everything comes together beautifully for an overall, excellently made cartoon, but that wouldn’t do it justice. This silly, totally ridiculous cartoon ironically lends itself to some pretty serious analysis.

Cartooning Style: It’s simple. It’s multi-dimensional.

Two qualities you’d never expect anyone using to describe the same program, yet The Amazing World of Gumball begs for that kind of labeling. It kind of reminds me a little bit of the Cartoon Network show Chowder– how something the characters would walk around in their regular animated world, and other times the background would be real life stills or a completely different drawing style or medium completely. That jarring change similarly is what makes The Amazing World of Gumball so dynamic.

And I can’t say enough about the visual hyperbole. So many emotions, actions, and movements are blown up to grand proportions, reminiscent of the huge  reactions and cues in anime, but still very distinctly American. The show is visually stunning enough to watch on mute.

Characterization: Every character, whether it’s Gumball and Darwin, their sister, Banana Joe, or the grumpy neighbor, each have distinct personalities that contribute to the main story-line (or provide a hilarious backdrop to it). Specifically, Gumball is that flawed character who acts selfishly out of immaturity, but rarely means any harm and always seeks to fix his ways (with the help of more morally righteous, but young and impressionable Darwin).

Originality: The whole world is crazy! Darwin, Gumball’s brother, used to be the family fish that evolved to grow legs (a fact that is unquestioned and accepted), the school is filled with miscellaneous objects as students, and often times the adventures and situations they get into begin seemingly normal, but spiral out of control fairly quickly. And its’ great. More interesting (and pleasing) still is the fact that the classmates and people are so diverse, but are judged and make friends with those crazy differences non-withstanding. And here most parents think we can’t learn anything from these silly cartoons.

The humor is obviously fantastic in that it’s clever and witty enough to be appreciated by the older crowd, but still has the loudness and crazy turn of events kids have always loved about cartoons.

Cartoon Network has recently approved two new seasons of the hit animated comedy series The Amazing World of Gumball, which brings the total order for the series to five laugh-filled seasons. Titled “Dino Donkey Dash.” the game is based on the episode of the series called “The Quest” and will consist of various fast-paced minigames, all of which are designed to provide a fun and engaging online experience for kids. The game will be launched on Cartoon Network websites all across Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Louise Okafor, director of digital entertainment, EMEA at Turner Broadcasting said “It’s a fantastic game which wonderfully encapsulates the creative emphasis of the series, but also works as a unique standalone proposition, which is really what you want when creating an online product affiliated to a series. Aardman are great partners to work with and we’re looking forward to seeing the game debut globally on Cartoon Network.”

The game puts players in control of Darwin and Gumball as they try to get their little sister Anais’ toy donkey Daisy back, after it’s been snatched by Tina the T-Rex. The various minigames all require the player to take the toy back through various means: from stealth, as they try to creep up on the sleeping dinosaur, to a sidescrolling, temple-run like dash to safety as the player tries to outrun Tina to the safety of the junkyard perimeter.

LeapFrog Gets Amazing World of Gumball and Powerpuff Girls

LeapFrog Enterprises has recently entered into a partnership deal with the global licensing and merchandising arm of Cartoon Network, Cartoon Network Enterprise, in order to bring two extremely popular franchises to LeapFrog’s learning platforms, namely The Powerpuff Girls and The Amazing World of Gumball.

The Amazing World of Gumball is a live-action/2D animation hybrid series that follows the hilarious misadventures of 12-year old Gumball and his family in the bright little town of Elmore. Gumball’s school friends include a T-Rex, a cheerleader peanut and a banana. Then there’s Dad, a 6’4″ pink rabbit who stays at home while Mom works in the rainbow factory.

The PowerPuff Girls, on the other hand, is one of the first few animated shows that put its creator Genndy Tartakovsky, and Cartoon Network itself on the map. It follows the adventures of 3 little super powered girls, who were created by Professor Utonium accidentally when he tried to make the perfect girl using the ingredients sugar, spice, and everything nice, only for his lab assistant, the monkey named Jojo to accidentally add Chemical X to the mix.

Episodes of The Amazing World of Gumball are now available for purchase in the LeapFrog App Center. Episodes of Cartoon Network’s classic series The Powerpuff Girls will be available in early 2013.

The Amazing World of Gumball: The Fight

On this week’s episode of The Amazing World of Gumball, the family tackles the sensitive issue of bullying. In the episode entitled “The Fight”, Anais notices that Gumball smells funky and is currently covered in cheese, which Gumball explains as the result of a fun day with Tina Rex, consisting of him being held upside down, his lunch money being taken, his homework being torn to shreds, and his lunch shoved into his face.

Anais tells Gumball that he is being bullied, and steps in to protect her brother. She calls Tina and asks her to quit picking on Gumball, only for Tina to misunderstood it as Gumball challenging her to a fight. Can Gumball protect himself in the upcoming fight or will he once again suffer at the hands of Tina Rex? Or will Richard be able to save him by teaching him the ancient fighting technique called: The Bunny Hop.

To find out, you have to tune in on Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30 PM ET/PT.

Amazing World of Gumball: The Helmet

This week on The Amazing World of Gumball, “Helmet”, the Wattersons realize that Gumball’s new lucky hat literally has the power to bring good luck to its wearer. With each family member (except Anais) being given a chance to test its effects, such as Richard being given a chance to participate in his favorite game show, and Nicole being considered for a promotion and raise at work immediately after wearing the hat.

The episode parodies The Lord of The Rings a bit, in the sense that Gumball, while initially bored of being lucky all the time, eventually realized that he needs the hat and becomes obsessed with getting it back from Richard and Nicole, who are currently fighting over wearing rights. Anais and Darwin, on the other hand, sees the hat’s dangerous effects and decides to go on a quest to destroy the hat, using a garbage crusher.

Will Gumball get his lucky hat back? Or will Anais and Darwin succeed in disposing of the dangerous headwear. Or maybe they will get corrupted as well. You have to tune in this Tuesday at 7:30 PM ET/PT on the Cartoon Network to find out.

The Meddler

This week, The Amazing World of Gumball tackles a very timely and relatable subject – “quality time with parents”. Entitled “The Meddler”, the episode finds Gumball embarrassed as his Mom comes to school in a misguided attempt to spend some “quality time” with her son.

It’s a very common scenario, and could have even happened to you at some point in your life. Not that it’s Mom’s (or Dad’s) fault – it’s natural for parents to feel some sort of disconnect with their kids due to the age gap, and it’s also perfectly natural for them to try and bridge said gap, by taking a more active part in their offspring’s daily activities. But sometimes, like in Gumball’s case, it’s in the execution where things fall apart for the worse.

Find out how the whole thing plays out by watching the Amazing World of Gumball this week, on Tuesday at 7:30 PM ET/PT.
