This week saw the release of Warner Bros. The Essential Daffy Duck on DVD shelves. The two-disc set, which retails for $26.99, contains 2 DVDs packed full with 21 Daffy Duck classics, such as Porky’s Duck Hunt, one of the many skits with Porky Pig as a hunter and Daffy as his unlucky (or lucky, in this case) target – this is not to be confused with the much better episode with Yosemite Sam as the hunter and Daffy and Bugs both playing the target, but it’s understandable since that episode is Bugs’ more than Daffy’s (Yosemite Sam is Bug’s Bunny’s villain).
The disc also includes Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2th Century, which places the crazy duck himself in the shoes of a Flash Gordon-esque Space Hero. Hilarity, of course, ensues. Another episode included in the collection is The Scarlett Pumpernickel, which – as the title implies – is a spoof of the classic Scarlet Pimpernel.
It’s not really classic in terms of age, but another episode included in the DVD, The Green Loonturn, deserves to be included in any Daffy Duck compilation, as it gives Daffy Duck a chance to lampoon one of DC Comics’ most popular superheroes, Green Lantern. It’s also very timely, due to the recent live action movie and the upcoming CG animated series.
