Marvel vs. Capcom 4 a Possibility

Despite investing WAY too much money on the abruptly cancelled Disney Infinity franchise, I still saw the silver lining: it gets rid of one major incentive for the House of Mouse to keep the video game rights to their Marvel IPs behind their walled garden. Lo and behold, it months after that nasty dissolution, rumors are starting to surface that Marvel vs Capcom might be in the works.

For the uninitiated, or for those too young to care, the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise (you can still play the last iteration on previous gen, so it’s not like it’s hard to see for yourself) is a 2D (later on 2.5D) fighting game in which characters from Capcom’s rich roster of properties are pitted against Marvel’s even richer roster of properties in huge, screen-filling fights that somehow sacrifices lore-accuracy in favor of balance and flashy visuals.

The Marvel vs. Capcom franchise (which technically started with either X-Men: CoTA or Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter on the arcades, depending on perspective) ended when Capcom lost the license for Marvel-based video games, but as mentioned earlier – current owners Walt Disney are no longer interested in in-house produced games and would rather license the IP out, so the rumors that a 4th installment of the series is going to be revealed next week is not entirely outside the realm of possibility.

Capcom, understandably, will neither confirm nor deny the rumors to Polygon.com, so further details on the possible revival are sparse. But we think it’s safe to assume that the new iterations will be light on mutant characters, if the most recent Marvel games are any indication.
