If you have always wanted a Naruto game on mobile but can’t abide by the endless stream of official and non-official turn-based, 2D RPG games based on the franchise, Bandai Namco has unveiled a new trailer for the solution to your problem: Naruto x Boruto: Ninja Voltage.

This new Naruto game is an actual action RPG where you control the characters in real time, as you control a group of shinobi from the series (or team up with friends online) in order to build forts, set traps, and take down enemies in your own special ninja way. The game will be available for both iOS and Android devices, and Bamco has confirmed that there will be an international release, so non-Japanese mobile gamers won’t be left out. You can view the official trailer below:

It is not surprising that anime afficionados have very little confidence in Hollywood when it comes to adaptations of manga and/or anime franchises—there have been many attempts to adapt popular franchises in the past, most of them end up languishing in development limbo or end up turning into Dragonball Evolution. So fans can be forgiven if the news that Lionsgate is planning a live-action adaptation of Naruto has been met with lukewarm reception (or ignored by fans completely.)

However, Lionsgate is determined to push through with the project, and in fact are taking steps to further polish at least the script, if this recent news is any indication: According to the Hollywood Reporter, the script for the Naruto live action adaptation has been scheduled for a rewrite, with scribes Jon and Erich Hoeber being the ones tasked with giving the script a do-over.

The Hoebers are well known for their big screen adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic Red, so they do know a thing or two about turning comic book content into a movie. Let us hope they can do justice to content that revolves around noisy little ninjas that wear brightly-colored jumpsuits. Other names attached to the Naruto live action adaptation are VFX artist turned director Michael Gracey as director, and Avi Arad as producer via his Arad Productions banner.

During the recent Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong 2017 event held in Hong Kong (duh), Bandai Namco previewed the upcoming 3D action brawler Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker via a meaty demo that features over 16 minutes of actual gameplay footage.

The video showcases some of the more notable features of the game—the 3-character fights with mobs, the expansive stages, the wall-running, and the appearance of giant characters, such as the gigantic frog Gamabunta and the even bigger one-tailed beast, Shuukaku. A huge chunk of the video features the player characters fighting Shukaku, which looks very, very impressive.

If the video got you all excited at the prospect of finally opening a can of whoopass on Gaara’s ornery tailed beast, you’re going to have to contend with the long wait, as Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker will be launching in early 2018 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

On the other hand, the Legacy rereleases of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series will be available much earlier, so it’s not like you’re going to be left Naruto-less for a long period. And there’s the fact that the Road to Boruto expansion is still going strong (and has recently added 60 fps mode, so there is every reason to give it a lot of attention.)

A couple of days ago, we posted news about a new Naruto/Boruto (should we just refer to it as Noruto for simplicity’s sake?) game for Japanese PS4s, Xbox Ones, and PCs called Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker, and made summations regarding a Western release being planned. Now, Bandai Namco has gone ahead and confirmed a release of the game for Western fans via an announcement, which includes a description of the game.

The description doesn’t tell anything outside of things that fans have already surmised based on the trailer, but it helps confirm a few things such as support for 4 v 4 fights and support for online play, in both PvP and co-op modes:

In NARUTO TO BORUTO: SHINOBI STRIKER, players go head-to-head in 4 vs. 4 battles, with all eight ninjas fighting simultaneously. NARUTO TO BORUTO: SHINOBI STRIKER features beloved Naruto characters and teams from the series, including Naruto, Sasuke, and Team 7. The game showcases a brand-new graphic style with vivid colors and dynamic third-person ninja gameplay that enables players to take advantage of the verticality of the arena environment with vertical running and jumping to elevated areas. Players can also choose to play co-op with friends and lead teams to victory to be the top ninjas online.

…and in case you missed it the first time around, here’s the announcement trailer full of juicy, shinobi-tastic gameplay footages:

Whether you liked the Road to Boruto expansion for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 or not, one can’t help but feel sad that it was initially believed to be the last game in the franchise. Of course, people held hope (buoyed by the fact that the franchise is way too lucrative to be let go that easily, one only needs to look at all the Dragon Ball Z games that were made years after the franchise first closed its doors.)

Case in point, a new Naruto game was announced for the PS4 in Japan this week, titled Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. What’s even better than the announcement is the follow up announcement that it’s also going to make its way to the West via the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. There’s a video trailer available that reveals a few key details about the game, namely that it supports 4-man team battles (for a total of 8-man battles), it uses arenas (or stages!) that are way bigger than the Ultimate Ninja Storm games ever had, it has a new visual style, and that there’s an emphasis on online play.

It’s too early to say but it does look like it’s either a modern take on the Uzumaki Chronicles games from the Playstation 2 or a Naruto-themed Arena Fighter in the same vein as the Gundam VS games. Either way, the fact that it’s a Naruto game has us excited and we’ll be keeping a close watch on this.

VIZ Media has recently announced that they have acquired the digital, broadcast, master merchandising, and home media rights to the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations for the North American and Latin American territories.

As a result of the acquisition, VIZ Media has partnered with streaming giant Hulu for the U.S. simulcast of the series’ first episode on April 5, which is the same day as its premiere in Japan. Succeeding episodes will continue to air weekly on Wednesdays.

For the uninitiated, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the continuation of the Naruto franchise, set years after the end of Naruto: Shippuden and follows the adventures of Naruto’s son, Boruto. For those who need a bit of a refresher, Hulu is also offering the complete Naruto Shippuden collection.

“We are very excited to announce the acquisition of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and know that fans everywhere will be looking forward to the debut of these new episodes,” says Charlene Ingram, VIZ Media’s senior manager of animation marketing.

February 3 has arrived and Bandai Namco has finally unleashed the PC/Steam version of Road to Boruto, which is an expansion for the 3D cel-shaded anime fighter Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 or a standalone purchase if you don’t have the base game yet, similar to how they did things with Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst.

PS4 owners got it earlier, of course, but the Steam release is worth reviewing on its own due to the nature of the platform. We’re not going to mince words here; many multiplatform games end up getting released with a lot of problems on the PC. One does not need to look far for an example: the base game, Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, shipped out on PC with bugs that made it run at sub 10 fps on some system configurations.

People originally blamed it on users trying to run the game on laptops or slow hardware, but this was disproven because some of the people affected were running high end setups, plus a patch released later by CyberConnect 2 fixed the problem and made the game playable even for people with toaster PCs.

That being said, how was the release this time around? There’s already a ton of reviews of the base game available so what’s left to tackle is the Road to Boruto expansion itself. So what do we get this time around?

First, we get the 1.08 patch for the base game. This patch affects even people who did not purchase the Road to Boruto expansion, because it has changes that affect a game as a whole. Including one of the most requested things about the game:

60 FPS Support

That’s right. Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is now the first in the series to let you play with silky smooth 60 fps. There is still an option to switch back to 30 fps, if you’re one of the users playing on a system that can barely run 30 fps. Keep in mind that the engine still uses frame dependent-timing, so choose an FPS that you can run consistently if you don’t want to suffer through slow-motion gameplay.

The 60 FPS option isn’t particularly resource-intensive, but it can cause some problems. We’ll get to that later.

As for other visuals-related improvements, they added an MSAA support up to 8x, greatly expanded the supported resolutions (formerly it only had 720p and 1080p as choices, now it goes from 640 x 480 all the way to 4K.)

New Content

We’re not going to bother saying whether the expansion is worth the price of admission, that will be up to you if you think the new content is worth $20 (or whatever price it is in your region. Steam priced it at the equivalent of $10 in my country. Yay for regional pricing!)
As for what’s new, you get 3 new stages – they’re nothing really special and would most likely blend in with the original stages after a while (it’s basically just the Boruto timeline’s version of Konoha, the Chuunin exam arena, and the battleground for the fight against Momoshiki, which looks very similar to the battleground for the fight against Kaguya.)

There’s also a bunch of new fighters that you can unlock by playing through the Road to Boruto story mode. You get Orochimaru’s “son,” Mitsuki, Sarada, and a version of 7th Hokage Naruto and Adult Sasuke with updated movesets. You also get two Borutos – one with movesets built around the “scientific ninja tool,” and one with the moves that he will use in the final battle against Momoshiki. You also get the Mecha Naruto character, which finally makes UNS Revolution completely skippable in the series.

Surprisingly, the Road to Boruto expansion also unlocked the preorder bonuses Boruto, Sarada (so now you have 3 Borutos and 2 Saradas, each one possessing a different moveset), and Kakashi’s Hokage costume. As someone who didn’t preorder the game, I appreciate this move on CyberConnect 2’s part but I can imagine it ruffling the feathers of some fans who preordered just for the bonus content.

For tournament makers and competitive players, there’s also a spectator mode added so now you can watch what other people are doing in their matches. Aside from that, you also get some new skins for existing characters (we don’t know which ones yet, many of the legacy characters have full models on story mode, but so far we have only unlocked the Road to Boruto skins for Gaara and Sakura, but we haven’t finished all of the sidequests yet, so who knows what else we could unearth – but there’s also a chance that many of these new skins/characters are being reserved for future DLCs. The absence of a playable Momoshiki and Kinshiki is puzzling, despite both having complete movesets.)

Other than that, you get some balance changes that we will not bother outlining because those are much better left in the hands of competitive players.

Any Bugs to Watch Out For?

As mentioned earlier, PC releases of multiplatform games are a bit of a gamble. You never know when you’re going to get a smooth port or a smorgasbord of bugs that testers missed. Unfortunately, Road to Boruto seems to be edging slightly towards the latter.

The biggest culprit here is the new 60 FPS option. The game was originally coded to be frame dependent and to run in 30 FPS. We’re betting that CyberConnect 2 didn’t have the time or incentive to overhaul the engine for 60 FPS, and went with what is basically a speedhack.

The 60fps option is there, but it basically just doubles the speed and some things weren’t adjusted – including the speed in which the substitution jutsu’s meter regenerates. When fighting in 60 FPS mode, you’ll notice that the sub meter regenerates faster, to the point where some online games consisted of fights between players who never ran out subs.

There are also reports of some attacks (particularly Sarada’s) not doing damage when set to 60fps.

Finally, there’s the MSAA option. Nobody knows the nature of this bug yet, but enabling it in x8 along with 60 fps resulted in some players getting slow motion gameplay. It’s not clear whether it happens because it makes the game so resource intensive that even high end rigs buckle, or that there’s a timing issue responsible. For now, it needs to be patched.

Is It Worth Getting?

Technically, if you’re asking how many hours you’ll spend in the Road to Boruto story mode, the answer is “not a lot.” We finished the main questline in a couple of hours or so, and that includes watching the cutscenes. From there, you get several sidequests that don’t really take too much time (except for Shikamaru’s sidequest, which is basically a lengthy gauntlet that we didn’t bother taking.) – go here and drive the crows away, go to this place and talk to this person, pick up these items etc. that sort of thing.

So technically, you get less than 5 hours of gameplay with the expansion. But this is a fighter that doesn’t really rely too much on story mode. In fact, there are probably fans out there who only bothered to breeze through story mode just to unlock all the characters. The meat and bones is still in the Free Battle and Online Multiplayer, in which case the replay value is technically “it depends” or “up to you.” There are enough additions in the expansion to make you want to go out and find people to spar with again, or fight the CPU again.

If you’re just interested in the 60 FPS option, keep in mind that it’s patched into the base game as well as part of the 1.08 update.

Viz is celebrating the fifth anniversary of their digital Shonen Jump magazine this week via a subscription sale and a sample of the periodical’s six new series. One interesting part of these is a translation of an interview between Team Jump and Naruto/Boruto author Masashi Kishimoto, which is included in a new chapter of Boruto. In the interview, Kishimoto mentioned feeling that Naruto became too introspective and dark as it went on, so with Boruto he would like to go for a more happy, fun tone that will be enjoyable even to younger boys and girls.

Of course, those who have read Boruto know that it started with something dark as well – with Boruto and a new character named Kawaki fighting over what looks like the remains of Konoha, with dialogue that many readers interpret as indication that Naruto has already died.

Kishimoto addressed that contradiction as well, and explained that he wants the manga to be happy, but also wanted to show that there’s a “dark turning point” coming, in order to grab the reader’s attention. So basically, we’ll get a lighter story with Boruto, but things will go pear-shaped towards the end. We’re totally fine with that, and while our memory is not pristine, we kind of remember that it applies to the original Naruto as well, which started out every bit as light as Boruto is right now before getting darker at some point.

But what about you, dear reader, would you prefer Boruto to stay its course or do you want it to lay on the controversy and the dark, mature themes from the get go? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

With only a few weeks away until its February launch, Road To Boruto is going full steam ahead with promotional videos. The latest one features female protagonist Sarada Uchiha, who is notable for being the daughter of two Team 7 members, Sasuke and Sakura. In the promo video, Sarada is pitted against her father, and she shows that not only is she worthy of continuing the Uchiha bloodline, but she also has the chops to go toe-to-toe with one of the most powerful shinobis to have ever lived.

You can watch the video below:

Road to Boruto will be released for the PS4, PC (Steam) and Xbox One on February 3 2017, as a standalone game or as a DLC expansion to existing purchases of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 (note that it is not part of the Season Pass, and will have to be purchased even if you bought the Storm 4 Deluxe Edition.)

A new promo video has been released for Road to Boruto, which is coming out on February 3 as both DLC upgrade for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 or as a standalone game (for people who don’t have Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 yet.) The new video shows off yet more gameplay as it features a bout between Boruto and his own father Naruto, albeit the teenage version.

The bout also shows off returning character Mecha Naruto (who was a robot version of Naruto that was created specifically for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution), and some of Boruto’s moves – particularly ones that make use of the Kote/science ninja weapon, which lets Boruto use techniques that he normally can’t perform.

We are less than a month away from the release of the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 expansion, dubbed Road to Boruto, for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While the February 3 release date may still seem so far away for people who pre-purchased the update, Bandai Namco has released a lengthy new trailer that will hopefully stave off the pangs of frustration – at the very least, it gives fans a glimpse of what they can expect by way of new content.

Based on the trailer, Road to Boruto will be adding new characters from the new generation of shinobi. It will also include versions of Boruto and Sarada with new movesets (the original playable Boruto and Sarada were preorder exclusives.) There’s also a bunch of new adventure/story mode content, and team-up jutsus.

It is worth noting that the Road to Boruto expansion will follow the same model as Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst, in the sense that owners of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 can buy it as a digital upgrade while those who don’t own the base game yet can buy it as a standalone release for full price (which will include the base game.) Keep in mind that the Road to Boruto digital upgrade is not part of the Season Pass for UNS4, so even if you have the deluxe edition or have bought the Season Pass, you still need to buy the expansion if you want new content.
