Since there’s a huge variety and quantity of anime these days, it is quite impossible to create ‘the best anime’ list. However, let’s try to make a list of ‘the most popular’ anime series of all-time.
7. Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball was first aired in 1984, making it the oldest series included on this list and due to its popularity, it received two sequels.
The Dragon Ball series focuses on young Gohan’s mission to locate the 7 magic dragon balls and save the world from different enemies using his powers. Throughout the progress of the series, the characters find a way to keep on helping their friends after death.
Overall, Dragon Ball is a gripping anime that has fairly extensive cycles of fighting. It is recommended for young audiences and those who are into old school anime.
This anime series is still shown on television all over the world and the sequel Naruto: Shippuden is as successful as its predecessor. It is aimed at younger viewers and a lot of its characters are quite formulaic to shönen manga.
The anime follows Naruto Uzumaki and his friends in their progress and journeys as he tries to be the most famous ninja in his village. The fighting scenes are greatly balanced with comedy scenes, making it more balanced compared to Dragon Ball.
5. Rurouni Kenshin
This anime series is probably best recognized for its prequel Trust and Betrayal. Rurouni Kenshin is set in Japan during the early Meiji period. Kenshin focuses on the former assassin Himura Kenshin who now wanders the country and assists those who need help in an effort to atone for the sins he carried out as an assassin. Rurouni Kenshin is more on the dramatic side, which shows the costs of war and the troubles of those affected by it. While there is comedy involved, this anime has a deep feel to it, which makes it worth watching.
This ongoing series is different from Rurouni Kenshin as it represents loyalty and the values of friendship in conjunction with comedy and action, with unique characters and remarkable character development.
Bleach focuses on Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who has the powers of a soul reaper in order to save his family. It is his task to protect humans and souls from hollows. However, when the reaper who provided him powers is to be executed, Ichigo decides to save her together with his friends.
3. Full Metal Alchemist
This series, as well as its sequel are set in Europe in industrialization era – a parallel world where Alchemy is considered the highest type of science. Full Metal Alchemist focuses on friendship, morality, brotherhood, equal trade and philosophy. It also features suspense, comedy and light action.
After their attempt to revive their dead mother goes wrong, the young alchemists Edward and Alphonse Elric started a mission to acquire their lost bodies once more. Along the way, they are confronted with often ethically related troubles.
2. One Piece
One Piece is one of the longest ongoing anime series but unfortunately, most of the early episodes were censored on the process of English dub by 4kids.
This series follows the mission of Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who possesses supernatural powers which is obtained from eating a magical fruit. Together with his ragtag crew, Luffy travels the Grand Line to look for One Piece, the ultimate treasure. The plot is wonderfully set in an incredible fantasy world, with unique characters and great story arcs.
1. Death Note
This series is a great suspense anime, which is set in modern-day Japan. Death Note focuses on the questions of the good and the bad, of justice and moral. The characters possess high intellect and several plot twists create an unpredictable storyline.
The anime follows Yagami Light, a high school student who finds Death Note, a mysterious notebook that lets him kill whoever’s name is in it. He uses the notebook to eradicate prisoners but soon, the police catch wind. L is considered as the world’s best detective so a suspense-filled cat-and-mouse competition is expected as everyone attempts to maintain one step ahead of the other.
