Cartoon crossovers, ala Heroes United

Heroes United has us look back at other crossovers

The upcoming Ben 10 Ultimate Alien and Generator Rex crossover has everyone super hyped up. We’ve been adding new coverage of the special event as often as possible, simply because its just too ‘dern awesome looking. In addition to it just being a cool, brand new episode, its just a sweet concept to see two entirely different shows colliding in a single format. With that in mind, we wanted to take a look back into some of the other more famous cartoon matchups, teamups, crossovers, mix-n-matches, and… squish-together-ers!

World’s Finest
Batman: The Animated Series helped spawn many different spin-offs, with the creative geniuses behind that show going on to work the Justice League Unlimited series, Batman Beyond, Green Lantern, and more. But back in BTAS’s heyday, there was a single other cartoon in the DC Universe, Superman: The Animated Series. The two shows, though made by the same people, were pretty different: Superman was fighting intergalactic alien overlords in a futuristic city, while Batman was tackling street crime in his art deco world. As much as fans of both toons wanted a matchup, No one ever thought they’d see the day. …But then World’s Finest came along, a three-part Superman: The Animated Series episode, where Batman, the Joker, Harley Quinn, and others made one of the most memorable, and best, mashups ever. The success here is likely what directly lead to shows like the Justice League, proving that matchups with super stars like these guys could work, and work well!

The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones
This first ever meeting between the classic characters from The Flintstones and The Jetsons first appeared as part of the Hanna-Barbera Superstars 10 series. Elroy, the brilliant son on the Jetsons, builds himself a time machine that the family decides to use for a vacation in the future – only Elroy accidentally sends them thousands of years to the past. Can the future family adapt to life with dinosaurs? Or can the prehistoric family evolve when they later all travel to the future? Of course, they’re super stars!

Jimmy Neutron and Timmy Turner from the Fairly OddParents are two of Nickelodeon’s most iconic mascots, so their pairing was something dreams were made of! One of the most appealing aspects of this particular crossover was the mixing of animation styles: Fairly OddParents is in a more traditional, 2D, almost Flash-based style, where as Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius utilized CG animation. Thus, when they tangled, we got to see each character in and out of their respective style. Perhaps better yet (and maybe somewhat of a prediction for the Ben 10 / Generator Rex pair) their matchup was so well received, it lead to two additional meetings! The Jimmy Timmy trilogy also included When Nerds Collide and The Jerkinators.

How about Turtles Forever in which the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of the 2003 4Kids cartoon series come face to face with their counter parts from the classic 1987 series. It was pretty awesome with it’s plot, action, classic characters and numerous references to the 80’s show, especially with the breaking the 4th wall gags from the 80’s show which confused everyone from the 03 universe.

“Why do you keep saying that? Who are you talking too? There’s no one there”- Hun from Turtles Forever.
