If you turned on your TV this morning and saw that Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, MTV, Nicktoons was gone, then you are not alone. Late Tuesday night Viacom pulled off Nickelodeon and 14 other channels from the 20 Million or so DirecTV subscribers. DirecTV subscribers lost 14+ channels owned by Viacom in a dispute to pay the channels DirecTV was brodcasting. Viacom sent letters to DirecTV on Tuesday ordering them to remove the channels by midnight or face legal action.
DirecTV was in hopes to continue broadcasting these channels as they tried to negotiate with Viacom. DirecTV said that Viacom was seeking 30% more fees, which would amount to an additional $1Billion. This would make the subscribers pay more. DirecTV’s executive Derek Chang said “ratings for many of (Viacom’s) main networks have plummeted, and much of Viacom’s programming can be seen for free online.”
But Viacom wants to increase the amount by a couple of pennies per day, per subscriber. But both sides dropped negotiations. Early this Wednesday morning Viacom executive Denise Denson stated “the last time we spoke with DirecTV at 11 a.m. (Tuesday) morning … there were no new ideas offered for resolution. In fact, the last proposal DirecTV had made was lower than anyone else pays in the industry, and a deal we said we would not do out of fairness to other distributors. … We are ready to talk at any time.“
These are the channels that the DirecTV Subscribers lost:
These Viacom channels are replaced with mixed channels from FX or Bravo. Sadly Viacom might keep it this way. Me and other 20 Million viewers lost shows like Legend of Korra, iCarly, Dora the explorer and classic cartoons and shows that just aired on Teen Nick. Like, All that, Kenan and Kel, and Rugrats. Also BET’s Black Panther. And golden classics like I Love Lucy from TvLand. Let’s all hope that this doesnt last long.
