Voltron Force: Rogue Trip Review
The name, Dudley, and his grating, retainer-lisped voice, will forever be emblazened in our minds. It’s not that there is anything wrong with that name, per se, but there hasn’t been too many Dudley cartoon characters that have ever been really cool. For instance, there was Dudley Do-Right, a bumbling, clumsy, Canadian Mountie, who always meant well, but never really seemed to be the confident hero. He didn’t exactly start a craze for new parents to put that name at the top of the baby name list. Neither will this Dudley. In the latest Voltron Force episode, (Voltron Force: Episode 15: Rogue Trip), Dudley is an ultra-obsessed fan of the Classic Voltron, who meets the Cadets, and wants to show them why he is Voltron’s biggest fan. Only, his intentions get lost in the translation, as he ends up biting off more than he can chew.
This episode starts off with the Cadets testing out their own vehicles to see if they can form their own Voltron-like mega-robot. Hunk is assisting them over the Voltcoms. As usual, Daniel likes to go very fast, and Larmina can’t help but compete with him. Once they get that out of their system, and with Vince reminding them they are there to test out forming their own Voltron, they all start from 3 separate corners, and make a very fast dash toward each other. Hunk sees this on his radar screen and tells them to take it slow, but the word slow is not in Daniel’s vocabulary.
Just as it looks like they are about to crash, Daniel calls out, “Let’s Voltron!”, and the 3 machines come together to form a new Voltron robot. The Cadets are excited that their test worked, and start coming up with names to call their new robot. Vince wants to call him Neutron, but that gets shot down. Larmina wants to call him WrathGuard the Destructor, but that was too evil, and Daniel says it should be Voltronus Prime, but that only sounded semi-cool. Daniel says the name has to be something Awesome. Then, they all shout out together, “Awesometron!”
Now, pleased with their new robot, and new name, Hunk calls them in to celebrate with Arusian Pizza, because his stomach is growling. But, after seeing the Arusian anchovies, that are like mini fish, Daniel yearns for the good pizza on Earth. So, they decide to test out their new Awesometron’s ability to travel through space (calibrate the vehicle’s interstellar travel matrices), and make a road trip to Earth to get some pizza there, and return with 5 slices of Carnivore Classic for Hunk.
Hunk gets called back to the Black Lion because Pidge is trying to figure out the new markings in the nexus, which he needs to extract, so he can analyze it in the lab. So, Hunk is needed to handle “heavy metal surgery”. As they start to extract the nexus, Black Lion throws them off and makes a mad dash out into the wild of Arus. Hunk and Pidge are stunned.
While they are eating pizza on Earth at Pizza Hole, Larmina agrees that it is delicious. She wondered why her Royal Chefs never made something that good. So, the Cadets start comparing their experiences growing up. Larmina’s Royal upbringing did not allow her to hang out with people her own age, and according to Vince and Daniel, she missed out on some neat things in her childhood. Daniel looks around to see if anyone recognizes them as the Cadets of Voltron Force, and no one seems to pay any mind.
Pidge explains to the rest of the team that when they were messing with Black Lion’s nexus, it seemed to trigger a security response, like he thought they were going to harm him. Keith says the Lions are one with their pilots, so why would he see them as one? Pidge only knows that the nexus modules are more important to Voltron than he originally thought. Keith says the priority is to get Black Lion back. Black Lion has turned off his homing beacon, but they know he is still on Arus. In order to find him, they will have to use more traditional methods.
Back at the Pizza Hole on Earth, Vince and Daniel are about to order take-out for Hunk, when someone notices them and identifies them as the new Voltron Force Cadets. Meet Dudley, identifying himself as Voltron’s Biggest fan. Daniel says, “I don’t know about that.” (Daniel always thought of himself as Voltron’s biggest fan before he became a Cadet) This statement doesn’t sit well with Dudley, as he repeats that he is Voltron’s biggest fan, and increases his grip on Daniel’s hand. He asks where the other Cadet is, and all of the sudden, Larmina has disappeared. They all look outside, near the Vehicles, and Daniel finds a Drule pistol lying on the ground. He assumes Larmina has been captured. Dudley tells them it isn’t a real Drule pistol. It’s from his Drule soldier action costume. Only 10 of them were made. Dudley owns 8 of them. He must have dropped it on the way in.
The hunt is on for Black Lion on Arus, with Pidge, Allura, Hunk, and Lance all searching in their respective Lions, while Keith is looking on foot. No one is having any luck finding Black Lion. There’s a little ribbing going on between the team, like how hard it must be to search at only 5 MPH. Keith says that they are so surrounded by technology all the time, that they sometimes don’t see what is right in front of them. (As he finds a large lion pawprint)
Larmina, who took leave from the others as well, in a skateboarding park, is content to try some new things with people her own age. She tries skateboarding for the first time, and almost falls, but saves herself, and gains a lot of cred with the kids at the park. Daniel, Vince, and their new pal, Dudley, finally catch up with her. Daniel tries to introduce Dudley as a big fan of the Voltron Force, but Larmina hears people around her saying he’s a dork, and she acts like she never heard of the Voltron Force. She walks away from the Cadets, and stays with the other kids. Daniel apologizes to Dudley, as he has no idea what got into Larmina. Dudley thinks girls are intimidated by his “vibe”. He suggests that they take this opportunity to go to his place to see his Voltron collection.
As they arrive at Dudley’s place, Daniel remarks on how big it is, and that his parents must be loaded. Dudley says, “Yeah, no big deal, but my Dad is kind of a big deal.” As they walk out of the huge garage, they see something big under a cover, and ask what it is, but Dudley tells them he is saving the best for last. They walk into a room that is an exact replica of the Castle of Lions control room. Daniel wonders where he got the blueprints. Dudley says his Dad knows a guy, who knows a guy. He admits it is not an exact replica because he got rid of that “stupid” holographic panel.
They walk into another room that has collectibles, all in their own display cases. The first thing that catches Daniel’s eye is an exact duplicate of Sven’s uniform. Dudley tells him it isn’t a duplicate, but the real deal. (His Dad knows a guy…) Vince assumes another object then is actually Keith’s blaster. Dudley agrees, and says he likes it because it’s a weapon that requires some skill, not like some lame “wrist gadget”, where all you have to do is press a button. Vince takes offense to this, claiming their Voltcoms are not activated by a button. “They actually read our…” and Daniel cuts him off. Don’t want to give all their secrets away, do they?
As Daniel starts to say that they have to be getting back, Dudley refuses to let them go until they have seen his big finale. Vince thinks he is one lLion short of a Voltron, but is curious to see this big thing Dudley is talking about. Daniel is wondering if Larmina is OK on her own. Larmina is thinking it’s the best thing ever, because she is riding rollercoasters with the other kids.
On Arus, Keith has finally tracked down Black Lion, but doesn’t want to spook him again. As the other Lions approach quietly, they can’t see Black Lion, so Pidge uses Green Lion’s sonar beacon to shake Black Lion loose. Black Lion comes out of a hollowed out large tree, but as soon as he meets up with the other Lions, his nexus sends out a signal to the others. The other Lions proceed to eject each pilot from their cockpits. Lance wants to know what just happened.
After 90 minutes of reading Dudley’s fan fiction, the Cadets have had enough. They want to leave, despite Dudley’s objections. Dudley says to himself, “You’re NOT GOING ANYWHERE!” They hop back in their vehicles to go find Larmina, but on the way out, they are stopped by a very large Classic Voltron, piloted by none other than Dudley himself. He says to them, “Now do you get it?!” “I told you I was Voltron’s Biggest Fan!”
Dudley starts chasing after the Cadets’ vehicles, spouting how good his version of Voltron is, especially after it defeats the Voltron Force Cadets. Daniel gets pounded by Dudley’s Voltron, and ends up crashing through a glass window, into one of Dudley’s replica environments, the Castle of Lions on Arus. Dudley has been using this environment to train to be Voltron’s new sidekick. Daniel thinks Dudley is certifiably nuts, and they need to shut him down. He runs his vehicle into the Yellow Lion’s left foot of Dudley’s Voltron, and sends him crashing backward from losing his balance. Vince comes crashing in through another window and zaps him with a green laser blast.
As Dudley gets up again, and starts firing back at the Cadets, he continues to taunt them, saying they have nothing to offer the Voltron Force, and the Force just keeps them around to laugh at them.
The Voltron Force is trying to come up with ideas about how to get the Lions back, wishing they had the talents of the Cadets, and learning to appreciate them more than ever. Meanwhile, Vince and Daniel wish they had Larmina to help them fight against Dudley’s Classic Voltron. Larmina is too busy enjoying a baseball game with her friends.
Allura goes back to consult with her father, King Alfor, in the catacombs. She tells him that she never imagined the Lions would turn against them. Her father says the Lions are not turning against them, but rather, challenging them. She says using force and diplomacy don’t work. He says those are the tactics of men. The Lions are the Pride, not men. And Black Lion is their Alpha. Did he fight or bargain to get to this position? Why is he the leader? Allura knows. Because he carries himself like a leader.
After the ball game, Larmina wants to know what they can do next because she has a lot to make up for. The other kids tell her they have to get back to their families, and ask her if she has a family she has to get back to. She admits she does.
Keith approaches all the Lions on foot, asserting himself as the Leader of the Voltron Force. As the others look on from afar, they can barely watch when Black Lion roars and tries to intimidate Keith.
Keith ignites his mini-blazing sword, holds it up, and then disengages it, and drops his Voltcom to the ground. Black Lion is apparently puzzled by this. Keith then holds out his hand, palms up, so Black Lion can sniff his hand.
Black Lion comes closer and smells his hand, and allows Keith to pet him. Pidge notices the Lions’ security systems have deactivated, and they all think it is incredible.
Back on Earth, Dudley is stomping on both Vince and Daniel’s vehicles, claiming that the Voltron Force would gladly allow him to replace the Cadets after they see he defeated them. Larmina comes crashing in on her vehicle, yelling, “Replace this!”, and knocks over Dudley’s Voltron. The 3 Cadets quickly form their Awesometron, and Dudley counters by forming his own Blazing Sword. The cadets are amazed, until they see it is labeled, “Voltron Replica” on the blade. They grab the sword and break it apart. Then Awesometron applies a knockout punch to Dudley’s Voltron, and sends him crashing back, and falls, defeated.
Dudley, feeling very knocked out, admits that they are truly worthy to be Cadets of Voltron Force…maybe. The Cadets leave, and bring back some Pizza for Hunk and all the members of the team. They are all enjoying it, even if it is being used to kiss up for taking an unauthorized field trip. They ask where Keith is. Keith is doing some bonding with Black Lion, as we see him standing on top of Black Lion’s mouth, eating his slice of the pie.
Stay Tuned to Nicktoons on Thursday at 8:30 PM EST, as an all-new Voltron Force episode airs. In this new episode, Pidge returns to his home Planet, Balto, to find that his Ninja Scientist friends have been infected with Haggarium, turning them into Zombie Ninja Scientists.
