Her Universe Press Launches at NYCC!
Calling All Aspiring Writers! Hear Big News From Her Universe and Get Expert Advice to Become a Published Writer!
That was the title of a panel in the completely packed 1A05 Room at New York Comic Con from 5:30-6:30 PM on Saturday, October 10, 2015. Ashley Eckstein, the Founder of Her Universe and an accomplished voice actor, was moderating the panel, where a big announcement was promised. What could it be? And why would a company that sells apparel and accessories want to talk about writing?
Let’s go back 5 years… Her Universe debuted in 2010, created by Ashley and The Araca Group, a theatrical production and brand management company. Ashley wanted to create a market for apparel that appealed to female sci-fi and fantasy fans, the same way Alyssa Milano had done for female sports fans with her “Touch by AM” line of apparel. Starting with a license for Star Wars, Her Universe went on to add licensed fashion collections for Doctor Who, Star Trek, Syfy, Marvel, The Walking Dead, Transformers, Studio Ghibli and Nerdist Industries.
So what was the big announcement? Take a look at this video for the exciting announcement and details directly from ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell and Kim Morrell, covering the panel from the front row in 1A05 at New York Comic Con, then read the rest of this article for a recap of the information presented at the panel.
Ashley Eckstein told us why she decided to launch Her Universe Press, a publishing imprint of Her Universe: She said she would come home from New York Comic Con every year with printed books and manuscripts that fans had written and given to her, not knowing what to do with, because they couldn’t get them published. Ashley would talk about it with her husband and her team and tried to think of how they could help all these fangirls that wanted to become published writers.
It wasn’t until she talked to her friend Russell Binder, President of Striker Entertainment, that she got her answer. She told him her story, and he said, “Why don’t you start your own publishing imprint?” He introduced Ashley to Anthony Ziccardi, Publisher for Permuted Press. After meeting with Ashley, Anthony said, “I want to team up with you. We always want to do something different. We’re looking for good stories, and if going directly to the fans is a new way to get those stories, we’re excited about it!”
Her Universe Press has two novels ready for publishing:
1. “The Confidence Chronicles” by Anne Convery and Ashley Eckstein, with illustrations by Dave Filoni (Release Date: Summer 2016)
Synopsis: “The Confidence Chronicles” is set in an alternate universe in gold rush California. It’s a steampunk fantasy, featuring a 12-year old girl “whose grit and energy and obsession with all things mechanical lead her along with her automatic owl, Eureka, to uncover exciting and sometimes chilling secrets in her hometown.”
2. “Weirdest” by Heather Nuhfer, with illustrations by Brenda Hickey (Release Date: April 26, 2016)
Synopsis: “Weirdest” is the story of a 13-year old girl, who–in her desperation to be the coolest in her school, makes a wish, and as a result, has her strongest emotions physically manifest themselves in weird ways. Her powers run haywire as she tries to solve the mystery.
Weirdest is available now for Pre-Order at Amazon.com
The company will be accepting synopsis submissions for both fiction and non fiction works and is looking to gain ground in the Young Adult and Tween demographic. Aspiring writers can submit their works at the website: http://HerUniversePress.com
As detailed on the website:

Note: The new Her Universe Press logo was created by Chris Petescia. He was also present in the room at the panel at NYCC, and asked to stand up by Ashley Eckstein, who talked about how the logo represents a book, exploding with all of your ideas.
We want to wish Ashley Eckstein, Her Universe Press, and all the aspiring writers that will be submitting their passionate stories to the website a hearty “Good Luck!”
