One Piece returns to free-TV in France
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the One Piece anime, Toei Animation Europe has negotiated the franchise’s return to free-TV in France. TF1 Group’s TFX network will begin airing the show during their Sunday morning youth slots beginning May 5th.
The series will be aired dubbed in French and simulcast in Japanese with French subtitles. TFX’s broadcast begins with the Dressrosa arc.
Under its original name of NT1, One Piece previously aired on the French broadcaster. For years, the show has been exclusive to pay-TV operators, like Game One which also runs the French dub. SVOD platform ADN and television channel J-One run new episodes of the show in Japanese a day after their original broadcast.
Eiichiro Oda began serializing the One Piece manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. In 1999, Toei Animation’s anime adaptation hit Fuji TV and the franchise has been a cross-media hit ever since. The manga has sold a massive 457 million volumes since its debut.
