Ganbarion’s Grand Battle series of fighting games based on Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece franchise will be making grand return via the Nintendo 3DS soon, so you might want to set aside some playing time on your handheld if you’re a big fan of One Piece, even if you already have Unlimited World Red.
Titled One Piece: Super Grand Battle X, the game will use a 3D cel-shaded engine and a 2D perspective similar to the one used by Gigant Battle on the Nintendo DS, as opposed to the isometric 3D perspective used by the Grand Battle games on the Playstation 2 and Gamecube (technically, the Gigant Battle games – which are also made by Ganbarion – are part of the Grand Battle series.)
One Piece: Super Grand Battle X will contain over 85 characters and will have a much more updated roster compared to the last outing on the DS, featuring playable versions of Admiral Fujitora, Doflamingo, etc.
Four screenshots for Grand Battle X have been released so far – a little bit thin but it should give you an idea on what the game looks like – basically, it looks really good. The sprites are small but there’s a surprisingly large amount of detail, and the designs are much closer to Oda’s, as opposed to the overly simplistic and caricatured style used by Gigant Battle.
One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X is due out on 3DS in Japan this winter.
