Aardman’s The Pirates! Make Off with Box Office Booty on its First Weekend
Sony/Aardman’s latest stop motion animated film The Pirates! Band of Misfits managed to score decent numbers at the box office on its first weekend, landing at the No. 2 spot (the top spot being taken by urban comedy Think Like a Man instead). The Pirates! first week take amounts to $11.4 domestic and $63.7 internationally, which brings its worldwide gross to an estimated $75.1 million on Sunday, April 29. The film only cost $50 million to produce.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet and need to know what it’s about, Aardman’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits follows a group of amateur well-meaning pirates and their equally inexperienced Captain as they try to compete with other scourges of the sea. The movie itself focuses on the titular pirates after they’ve been contacted by someone, claiming that their parrot is the last living specimen of what was thought to be an extinct species of birds. Together, they try to get the bird examined and verified, only to run afoul the queen of England, who has a huge problem with Pirates (namely, the fact that their heads are still attached to their torsos). The film features the voice talents of Hugh Grant, David Tennant, and others.
