Adventures of Tintin has Highest-ever opening for an Animated film in India
Sony Pictures India has recently announced that The Adventures of Tintin: The Secrets of the Unicorn’s opening weekend take in India is $1.46 million, making it the highest-ever for an animated film in the country. It also holds the same record for any Steven Spielberg film that opened in India. Tintin has beat DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 2, which used to be the top grossing animated movie with an opening take of 55 million rupees (roughly $1 million). The Tintin film was also released with over 350 prints, another record breaking number for an animated film as per SPE’s estimates – in English and Hindi, which includes 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D formats.
“Not only is the animated genre gaining ground amongst all age groups in India, but Tintin is unique in the sense that the franchise is enjoyed and appreciated by a very wide audience right from kids to adults who grew up on Tintin,” said SPE India MD Kercy Daruwala. “The film’s collections have increased day upon day and we expect to see the film sustain strongly based on excellent word of mouth.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment hopes that its next animated release, Arthur Christmas, will perform as well as Tintin in its opening on Dec 9.
