The Congress to Premiere in Cannes

The Congress to Premiere in Cannes

Ari Folman’s new project The Congress will be opening the 45th Director’s Fortnight sidebar at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2013. The sci-fi movie makes use of both live action and animation, and stars Robin Wright, Paul Giamatti, Jon Hamm, Harvey Keitel, Danny Huston and Frances Fisher.

The Congress is based on The Futurological Congress by Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, who was also the writer for the popular sci-fi book Solaris. The story follows an aging actress (played by Robin Wright), who agreed to have herself scanned and turned into a digital actress as a way of supporting her disabled son. The studio was allowed full use of her digital image, in any way they see fit, while the actress is no longer allowed to act again. She soon realizes just how problematic the agreement was.
