David Tennant Cast in Magic Light’s Highway Rat
It cannot be denied that a huge chunk of actor David Tennant’s success outside of the UK is owed to his stint as the doctor in BBC’s long-running sci-fi franchise, and while Tennant has since followed it up with equally notable performances in other countries (including a very effective portrayal of the creepy psychopathic villain Purple Man), the actor is once again lending his expertise for a BBC role. This time around, as the voice of a character called The Highway Rat.
According to the announcement by Magic Light Pictures, Tennant will be headlining an impressive cast that includes Nina Sosanya, Tom Hollander, Frances de la Tour, and Rob Brydon in another magical tale from top UK picture book duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, titled The Highway Rat.
Originally published in 2011, The Highway Rat’s story focuses on a ravenous rat with a serious sweet tooth, going around searching for as many sugary goodies to steal with his swashbuckling demand: “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway, and whatever I want I take.” At least, until his banditry eventually catches up to him and the poort rat finds himself in a precarious situation.
The special is directed by Jeroen Jaspaert (Stick Man), and produced by Michael Rose and Martin Pope of Magic Light Pictures and. Animation services have again been provided by Triggerfish Animation in Cape Town. The composer is René Aubry. Acquired for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Snr. Commissioning Editor, BBC Drama.
