Disney Jr. has recently acquired broadcast rights to the new 45-minute special debut of Small Potatoes – Meet the Small Potatoes for the US and Japan. Meet the Small Potatoes is the first animated movie from Little Airplane Productions, and stars the four popular musical spuds along with famous actor Malcolm McDowell. The movie is scheduled to premiere in the US in early 2013 via the Disney Channel and Disney Junior, Japan will follow later in the same year via Disney Junior.
Described as an ‘animated Rock mockumentary,” Meet the Small Potatoes focuses on the band called the Small Potatoes, which is made up of anthropomorphized spuds, as they rise to fame from their humble roots on a farm in Idaho. Along the way, we get to see the struggles between Nate, the band’s songwriter, and Ruby, the band’s diva. The movie will deal with the band’s historic break up and their succeeding reunion onstage in New York City. The movie features the voice of Malcolm McDowell (Entourage, Clockwork Orange) as Lester Koop, the band’s manager.
“We’re very excited that Disney Junior will debut Meet the Small Potatoes,” said Josh Selig, president and founder of Little Airplane Productions. ”We believe this is the first time an animated movie has integrated a brands’ Facebook community into the actual cast of the film. We want to thank our huge international following on Facebook for helping us build the Small Potatoes from a series of shorts to a truly global on-line and broadcast phenomena.”
