Dissidia Final Fantasy Console Version Will Have a Proper Story Mode
The Final Fantasy-themed arcade fighting game Dissidia Final Fantasy will be getting a console release, but and according to a recent Weekly Famitsu interview with producer Ichirou Hazama and director Takeo Kujiraoka, the console port will have something special: a proper story mode.
“Many users are expecting a story for the console version, which we are of course preparing. However, the focus of the game is battles and that has not changed. We will further enhance other elements as well, which will take a little bit more time.”
Keep in mind that the first two Dissidia games, which were released on the Playstation Portable, had story modes, but they were rudimentary. Not that it affected the players’ enjoyment of the games, as it’s pretty much a given that story modes on fighting games were not a priority, but for a Final Fantasy-branded game it was very much an edge case.
The interview did not specifically state what kind of story mode it will be – whether it’s going to be similar to the portable versions or the kind of expansive, full-fledged story you normally get with main Final Fantasy entries.
But don’t take it to mean that the producers are forgetting the fighting aspect, because that’s still pretty much the main point of Dissidia. And in fact, they are possibly targeting eSports for the franchise:
“If we can export it to the world as a high-proficiency, competitive fighting tool, while also an enjoyable team battle Final Fantasy, it might even rise up as an e-Sports event,” Kujiraoka said. “If that happens, then next will be a global tournament, right? I can’t say too much, but I want to use these sorts of ambitions to make Dissidia Final Fantasy an even better game.”
