One of the people behind Adult Swim and Fox’s ill-fated Animation Domination High Definition has just signed a first look deal with Hulu. Nick Weidenfeld, who led program development on those two blocks, has agreed to work with the internet streaming service to animated properties for the platform.
With writing credits on the likes of Axe Cop, Major Lazer, Moral Orel and Neo Yokio, Weidenfeld is a big grab as Hulu tries to build out its original offerings. Weidenfeld most recently headed up the struggling Viceland cable channel and has two Emmies for helping produce the live-action series Children’s Hospital.
Hulu is no stranger to adult animation. The service produced three seasons of The Awesomes with Broadway Video and Bento Box between 2013 and 2015 and the shortlived Eva Longoria vehicle Mother Up! in 2013. They also picked up foreign shows, like the Canadian Fugget About It, and labelled them as originals. For the family audience, Hulu recently made headlines by reviving Animaniacs.
