Frederator/Shankar’s Castlevania Toon Confirmed, Warren Ellis to Write

Some time ago, rumors that Frederator Studios (of Adventure Time fame) is working on an adaptation of videogame franchise Castlevania began to surface, supported by an old statement from director/producer Adi Shankar made on Twitter. While both camps did not provide further details to confirm the rumor, astute fans were quick to assume that it’s going to be an animated adaptation and will be under Netflix.

More recently, Netflix themselves have all but confirmed all the rumors via a listing for the Castlevania series, which probably allowed Adi Shankar to talk more about the project and blow the lid wide open:

“Castlevania is a Netflix Original Series with Season 1 launching in 2017 and Season 2 in 2018. Furthermore, I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation,” says Shankar through his official Facebook page.

What’s even more interesting (and exciting!) is the fact that Shankar also revealed the writer for Seasons 1 and 2 – none other than comic book scribe Warren Ellis (or Warren f’ing Ellis, as Shankar put it.)

The Netflix listing provides more info on the series:

Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.
