Gareth Edwards to Direct Star Wars Spin-Off Movie

According to a recent report by THR’s Heat Vision, Gareth Edwards, who’s fresh off the success of Godzilla at the box office, has been tapped to direct the first Star Wars spin-off film, which is going to be directed by Gary Whitta and slated for a December 16, 2016 release.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance!” says Edwards. “I could not be more excited and honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”

No plot details have been released yet, and whether it will focus on an existing character or someone entirely new created for the purpose of the spin-off. It was also confirmed that Edward’s new Star Wars gig will not affect his commitment to the Godzilla franchise, which is expecting a sequel:

The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, ” says Tull, “but who knew it would a Star Wars instalment?”

“We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”
