GKIDS Picks Up Ernest & Celestine
Indie distributor GKIDS has recently announced that they will be distributing the critically acclaimed French animated feature Ernest & Celestine in the US starting this fall. Based on Gabrielle Vincent’s series of children’s books, the film is a hand-painted watercolor animation that tells the story of an unlikely friendship between the bear Ernest and a young mouse named Celestine.
Ernest & Celestine is produced by Didier Brunner and Les Armateurs, and is directed by Stephane Aubier, Benjamin Renner, and Vincent Patar. The film was already screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it got a special mention at Director’s Fortnight. The North American premiere will be at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, while French release is slated for December 12th, 2012.
GKIDS president Eric Beckman said, “We are overjoyed to be bringing Ernest & Celestine to US audiences. The film is a triumph of 2D animation and storytelling. A phenomenally beautiful hand painted watercolor design, immensely likable characters, a wonderful ‘friendship against all odds’ story that sweeps you up and does not waste a single minute of screen time. It is just overflowing with warmth and playful visual humor, there is so, so much to like about this movie.”
