‘Jem and the Holograms’ Film In the Works
Want to hear something truly, truly, truly outrageous? Jem is back – in film form!
It was recently announced that a live-action film is in the works for this treasured ’80s franchise. However, unlike many Hollywood endeavors, the creators wish for fans to contribute. Whether a person wants to submit designs for costumes or vie for a spot on the cast, they can do so by visiting the movie’s official Tumblr page. “It’s sort of like Kickstarter,” said director Jon M. Chu. “But rather than asking for money, we’re asking for your creativity.”
Jem and the Holograms ran from 1985 to 1988, and the story revolved around Jerrica Benton and her mysterious pop star alter-ego. The series spawned merchandise like lunchboxes, coloring books, and costumes. I recall receiving a doll for my birthday, and I have many warm memories of taking her on adventures around my childhood neighborhood.
The team behind this project includes Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun (a good sign, right?); Jason Blum, who will act as producer; Jon M. Chu, director.
What do you guys think about this latest development?
