Layton’s Mystery Journey anime officially announced

Confirming earlier reports, Level-5 has officially announced an animated adaptation of their Layton’s Mystery Journey video game. Set for spring 2018 in Japan, the series’ title roughly translates to Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat’s Mystery-Solving Files and stars Katrielle “Kat” Layton, the daughter of Professor Hershel Layton, as she tackles oddities in London alongside her dog Sherl.

The series is being pushed as yet another one of Level-5’s cross-media franchise. The animated series will be produced by LIDEN FILMS. A manga series will be serialized in Shogakukan’s Ciao magazine concurrent to the broadcast. Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy has signed on to produce “stylish goods” based on the series. Level-5 will continue to develop new video games linked to the Layton Mystery Journey series.

Kana Hanazawa will voice Kat in what’s being described as a “high-speed comical mystery-solving story.” Level-5’s CEO, Akihiro Hino, will serve as the show’s creative director and is credited as being its concept originator. Susumu Mitsunaka will direct the series with character designs by Yoko Takada.

According to earlier reports, the series will run for 50 episodes, though Level-5 did not confirm those details in their initial announcement. The company also declined from sharing broadcast partners.

The Professor Layton franchise debuted with a video game from Level-5 on the Nintendo DS in 2007. It told the story about the titular Professor and his assistant Luke as they solve cases using puzzle game play. Multiple sequels and prequels were produced with cumulative video game sales surpassing 15 million units worldwide. Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, the most recent entry, launched on the Nintendo 3DS and iOS/Android platforms earlier this year. The game marked the first time the Professor didn’t star in a mainline release. Instead, Katrielle, the Professor’s daughter, took on the puzzle solving.

The Professor Layton franchise previously inspired an anime feature film in 2009, which was produced by OLM. It was released in North America by Viz Media.
