While The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered as one of the high points of the franchise, most LoZ fans are of the opinion that it still won’t best its 2D sprite-based predecessor, Link’s Awakening, which originally appeared on the classic Game Boy.
However, we may end up seeing the best of both worlds as a fan has seen it fit to remake Link’s Awakening on the Ocarina of Time engine. Titled Link’s Awakening 64, the remake takes advantage of certain N64 emulators’ ability to replace art and sound assets on the fly in order to mod existing games. Link’s Awakening 64 is said to include an original soundtrack, and 3D renditions of classic original enemies, as well as the dungeons and storylines that made the gameboy RPG a gaming icon.
Given the legal grey area that these projects occupy, it is normal for fans to fear for its future but it looks like progress is already far enough to provide a preview of the remake in action:
