We here at Toonbarn are big fans of the Russian CG animated short series Masha and the Bear, to the point were we have dedicated a section of the site to its videos. so we’re not really surprised that the hit series has now surpassed 1.8 billion views on Youtube (that’s not even accounting for the views on unofficial uploads from other users.) But it is a news good enough to share for a number of reasons.
First is that milestone puts it as 6th in the list of most-viewed videos of all time. Note that it’s for all videos, not just cartoons. Not bad for a short that was originally released in a language that majority of its viewerbase don’t even understand.
Next, is that it beats Adele’s smash hit single Hello in order to take that position. Not that we’re being antagonistic towards well-crafted, mainstream representatives of popular music, but we’re a cartoon site so anything that puts it above other mediums and platforms is cause for celebration.
Lastly, it’s also a proud moment for Russian animation as it is the first non-music video in the country to ever reach the top of the charts.
The episode in question, by the way, is titled “Recipe for Disaster,” and features Masha trying to cook porridge by herself, with hilarious results:
