Pixar’s latest animated short, The Blue Umbrella, already debuted this month at the Berlin Festival, but it will be making its way to US shores via the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival this coming March 8 to 16 at Austin, Texas. The short is scheduled to screen in theaters with Monsters University starting on June 21, 2013.
The official synopsis:
“It is just another evening commute until the rain starts to fall, and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters. And in the midst, two umbrellas—one blue, one not—fall eternally in love.”
Blue Umbrella is worth noting as director Saschka Unseld’s vision is for the animation to have the same aura as classic 2D animation, instead of CG. This means the faces of the umbrella appear as superimposed lines on the actual umbrellas, instead of the whole thing looking like they were rendered as an umbrella model with a face.
